Ugh, you're right. I didn't even realize it was still that convoluted. Between our archaic, effectively unenforceable cannabis bylaws, and now this, it's like our council is staffed by a bunch of puritans.

Doesn't it just say that people with park reservations get to boot people using a reserved area? I didn't read that as needing a permit to drink at a table.

Sure, but that doesn't make it any less absurd. You must drink at one of the designated picnic tables. You can't just use lawn chairs, or a picnic blanket, or sit on the grass like a normal person, they have to add some ridiculous hoop to jump to, some condition that exists only as a façade that there's some semblance of effort and thought behind it.

Unrelated, got another door insert from a new challenger for Ward 11, and my word is the marketing cringe-worthy. At this point I'm not sure who I can even vote for, it's bad enough we're in a ward that has virtually nothing in common with our community without being presented with this roster of morons.

It doesn't shock me they are baby stepping into the park drinking via a bunch of highly specific rules. They have to throw a bone to the "think of the children!" types. I'm sure it won't be enforced (seems like it isn't already). When the world doesn't end due to this law, no one will even pay attention when they fully allow booze in parks.

As thought they don't already incessantly pander to the Helen Lovejoys as it is.

My concern is that enforcement under the previous model was lax because there wasn't anything other than a bylaw that largely amounted to a gentleman's agreement: don't be obnoxious or overt, and we'll leave you alone. Placing picnic benches and having a reservation system attached to them is infrastructure that requires overhead to support. That overhead is now incentive to enforce the bylaw and generate revenue.

Picnic table booking isn't new. They are literally just saying that if you are drinking at a picnic table, don't get mad when someone who has a reservation can come in and stop your party.

I set up "camp" at the parks all the time when I take my son. Cooler, lawn chairs, Bluetooth speaker, sun shade. It's usually just a couple of us and we keep to ourselves, no one has ever said anything.

I got a ticket for this last summer with 2 friends at Riley Park. We had a bag for our recyclables, biked to the park and brought lawn chairs to watch some cricket and kick a ball around. Ended up getting a ticket from some peace officers who said if we wanted to hang out and have a drink, we should go to a bar. In the middle of a pandemic.. So maddening.

They at least were lenient to the point of writing one ticket for the 3 of us rather than ticketing us all.

Here we go, a challenger appears in Ward 4 to go up against Chu:

"Not Sean Chu" is a compelling proposition. I'm in.

Honest question here... how did Chu get elected in the first place? I mean the guy isn't charismatic, says dumb things all the time, and constantly sounds confused at council meetings. Just wondering why people voted for this guy in the first place?

I could be wrong, but I think he gets large blocks of voters by going to churches, cultural associates etc. I think he came in when there was an outgoing councilor, so had less competition, and had his former roll as a cop to lean on. I believe one year the competition split the vote, and last election Greg Miller came pretty close to beating him. I agree it's baffling. Anyone with half a brain paying attention to him should realize he's absolutely worthless. But I guess he says the right things to the right people.

He's also apparently really good on the doors with people, now with Covid it will be interesting to see if he loses that edge.

Well the election is in October so unless Bumbles McPremier's aggressive reopening plan smacks us with a 4th wave he should still have it.

That alone should be good enough. Although if more good candidates come out, then the vote splitting works in Chu's favour.

He came to my door and was not good at all. Mind you, I was grilling him on why he continually attacked the idea of my wife and I having a safe way to commute to work in a green and healthy manner. In the end, we agreed to disagree, and I put up a Gregg Miller sign.

Too bad Greg chose not to run this time around. I don't live in that ward but I know him and he'd do well for the constituents and the city.

Most people barely pay attention to politics at all (especially local/municipal politics) and can't even tell you much about Chu. He's a self-described conservative (that alone gets you very far in Calgary politics, as Rob Anders and more recently Michelle Rempel Garner demonstrate), and he regularly gets positive/favourable coverage in Sun Media publications where the writers and editors massage his words to make him sound more intelligent and coherent than he comes across to anyone who listens to him directly.

So yeah, everyone who actively follows local politics knows how moronic Chu is and how utterly worthless he is as a councillor (even conservatives who oppose the same things he opposes should still expect better representative of their views than Chu provides), but the percentage of the population who are highly-informed voters is way too low. I'd hazard a guess and say anyone who reads this thread is likely more informed about local politics than 75% or more of voters.

Isn't Chu also a former police officer, maybe not quite the person he's being portrayed here.

From Wikipedia:

Awards
While working for the Calgary Police Service, Chu received both the Calgary Police Service Distinguished Service Medal and the 20 years Service Medal. His contribution to community initiatives has been recognized with both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Alberta Centennial Medal.

Education and career before politics
Chu spent three years in military service in Taiwan before moving to Canada.

After his arrival in Canada, Chu attended Mount Royal College.

Prior to being elected Sean was a member of the Calgary Police Service. During his 21 years of service Sean worked as a member of the motorcycle Unit, District #1 and the Diversity Resources Team for Community Outreach.
