I’m a city councillor (not in Calgary) and checked with our city clerk, who used to work for the Alberta government. She doesn’t believe that anything that Johnston has done so far disqualifies him from running in the election or serving should he be elected (as if....). If he’s charged and convicted then he’d be disqualified.

Good councillor. He'd be a big improvement over Davison.

How nice of Kevin Johnston's supporters (???) to paper every car in Killarney with his pamphlets.
And how nice if him to co-opt the Flames lettering and imagery for his material.
And how nice of the rain to render every pamphlet into mushy crud once you pull it from the windshield.

Also great of him to put signs on lampposts (illegal) along 17th Ave SW in May (double illegal). They also got up up about 8 feet high, so it will be a pain for the city to take them down.

Does that mean defacing them would be fair game?

That you need to reserve a park bench to drink alcohol?
During last spring’s / summer’s lockdowns, we were gathering just south of the river with friends, brought our lawn chairs and coolers, made a distanced circle, and ate lunch together. We also had a couple (plastic) glasses of wine, beer, or whatever alcobev people fancied. We took all our garbage and empties with us when we left. It was just an open green space, we had coolers and lawn chairs, no picnic table required. We attracted zero law enforcement attention.
Under the law then, what we did was illegal. But under the new program… what we did is still illegal, but it will be illegal because we didn’t book a f--king picnic table for it.
If we want to congregate or walk through the park with a bottle or can of a soft drink, no problem. I fail to see how the inclusion of alcohol raises a new issue that isn’t already covered by laws against disorderly conduct, public intoxication, littering bylaws, etc. I don’t think anyone is asking permission to get blotto in Prince’s Island Park, just allowing reasonable adults the opportunity to enjoy whatever beverage they choose while doing so — responsibly.
I know I’m one of the first to say “never let perfect be the enemy of good”, but this is adding layers of cost and bureaucracy when they could have CTRL-C'd and CTRL-V'd from our provincial parks legislation which already allow drinking. This new law provides a revenue-based incentive to enforce this picnic table rubbish; as the law has administrative overhead that costs something to run, ticketing people will be a way to recoup the cost.

If only there were some other countries that allow public drinking that we could look at to see if their societies had collapsed. No? Ok then, lets dip the hair of our pinky toe in the water and see if our arms fall off. And lets add some bureaucracy while we are at it.

No, no countries at all.
Except Germany. And Austria. Well, and New Zealand, they allow it too. And England... France... Japan... Italy... Belgium... Denmark... Ireland....

TD i agree completely with you.
North America's approach to public alcohol consumption is, well silly.
Open it up, if I wanna have a beer on a walk after dinner on a nice night I should be able to. BTW, I do it all the time, shhh.

Edmonton approved their plan a little before Calgary.
thought I'd see how they compare.
here's a link.
https://www.edmonton.ca/activities_p...nic-sites.aspx
a bit different from first look.
For Edmonton, it is not by the table but picnic site, and smaller ones appear to be first come, first served.
and the sites can be pretty large.
There is a wide range in the capacity of each site. The largest sites are the bookable ones, which may have capacities up to 100 people. The non-bookable sites are smaller and may have 1-3 picnic tables.

I don't disagree that the whole reserving a table, etc is ludicrous, but the provincial legislation is full of useless red tape as well.
Quote:
A new law just quietly went into effect in Alberta while you weren't looking. On June 17, 2020, the law regarding drinking in Alberta parks and picnic areas officially came into force. The law and its amendments allow you to drink in parks, though there is some serious red tape that makes it a little less casual than it sounds.
This doesn't just apply to public parks; it would hold for municipal parks, privately-owned and operated parks, and picnic areas in provincial parks and recreational zones.
Beyond giving permission, the owner must also place a sign up at the park, notifying visitors of the rule.
The bill says that the sign must state that people can consume liquor in the park, set out the "designated" picnic area, and add the hours during which the liquor must be consumed.
So basically, if you don't see a sign you better not crack that bottle.
Previously, the picnic sites in Alberta that did allow drinking had to require visitors to pair it up with food. But the new rules removed the food requirement and now allow people to booze as is.
But you do have to be careful. If a cop or peace officer deems that you've gotten "intoxicated," you must stop drinking at the park right away.
