I looked at Allen, then took a look at the free agent market coming up. There are goaltenders as good that should shake loose for less. I think they minimize the spend on goaltenders unless someone is willing to incentivize them to take one. Holtby and a free agent should get them through the next couple years and see if one of the two young tenders steps up. With $25M in cap space you can buy a pretty good first line, or a top forward, top defenseman, and a really good backup or tandem between the pipes with Holtby.

The deal teams like the Canucks and Stars will need to make is gonna be close to market value to not take those goalies. If they don't pony up, then the Kraken can pick and flip them. VGK did the same thing.
Lightning may give the Kraken a first to take Johnson. Hope the Kraken don't do them any favors otherwise.

Holtby is terrible. Really, really terrible. If it wasn’t for his contract, he’d be retired.

If you are Montreal, do you ask Carey Price to waive his No Move and then protect Allen instead?
Montreal would probably have to sweeten deal with Kraken as Carey has an $11M signing bonus due this year. After this year his actual dollar value is roughly $7.5M for remainder of contract.
The other option Kraken may have in goal could be either MA Fleury or Lehner from Vegas.

They could ask, however with that contract.
I would think there is no chance Seattle would select Price.

I think it's unlikely. It's a completely different situation than Engelland.
Vegas wanted Engelland and his wife to be available right away to talk to the players who were chosen (and their wives) to reassure them that there's more to Vegas than what you see on the Strip and to provide advice on where to live and schools for their kids and things like that.
I remember seeing an interview with someone from the team who said that Engelland and his wife were basically acting as concierges for the other new players.
Those sorts of issues shouldn't really be a problem for Seattle in the same way they were for Vegas. Also, Ryan is from Spokane and played his junior hockey in Spokane, so the "local knowledge" factor would be non-existent and I don't see him really being a player who would sell tickets just because he's from the same state.
If they were going to go for the local flavour angle, I'd think Tyler Johnson and/or TJ Oshie (if the Caps leave him unprotected) would be more-likely to fill that role than Ryan.
Even if there is a fit between Ryan and Seattle, there really wouldn't be any reason for them to waste their expansion pick on him when they could just wait and sign him as a UFA. With Engelland, Vegas wanted him available to the other players right away, so they didn't want to wait the couple of weeks for free agency.

they can extend Giordano this summer ... what happens to the likelihood of the captain getting selected if he has a second year on that contract at say $5M?
Would potentially keep him in Calgary without having to protect him.

I thought the expansion draft was before the window for teams to sign free agents? So Gio would not be able to be re-signed until after the expansion draft had taken place?

Yeah the expansion draft is before the entry draft which is always before year end ...ie June 30 in a normal season.
Maybe they are just going with Aug. 1 this year?
edit...found it
July 15*: Last possible date for the Stanley Cup Final
July 21: NHL Expansion Draft (Seattle)
July 23-24: 2021 NHL Draft

So Gio cannot formally extend until July 28...same with Johnny.
Nothing stopping BT from getting verbal agreements with either beforehand though.

True, but if Seattle takes a player whose old team has merely a verbal agreement with him about a new contract, Seattle doesn't have to honour that agreement – or even know about it.
‘Hi, glad to report to the Kraken. You should know that the Banff Fighting Squirrels agreed to extend me for five years at $5 million the day before you drafted me.’
‘That's nice. You should know that the Banff Fighting Squirrels can't write cheques on the Kraken's bank account.’

It’s not a quote, it’s a paraphrase, and I can only recommend you read back.

That's a helluva risk for Seattle to take, without some "insider" knowledge like what occurred with Engelland, a pending UFA whom they'd own the rights to for a few days.

Every thing I'm hearing about the Krakens "plan" is that they want to play their cap really smart. They do NOT have any intention of spending much more than the floor so in this fixed cap future for a few years they will have a major advantage.
I would just note that exposing Gio and Lucic is pretty darn safe from everything I've read. They aren't taking ANYONE's "Cap" problems away for them. Most mock drafts have them taking Oshie at 5.5 as a local boy. They will likely take Kjillington from Calgary and almost every mock draft show that.
FWIW Even Vegas only drafted 1 single $6 Mil player and that was of course Fleury. The Kraken have lots of goalies to choose from however there is NO Fluery caliber goalie available or even anything close.

Extend Gio?? If he gets an extension, it should be between 2-3 million and that won't stop thr bitch pigeons from taking him.
what is with some fans? Honestly, this team isn't good so why do what you can to keep it together? They should not give Seattle any extra assets for any reason whatsoever. I've joked before "we'll give you Backlund if you take Lucic" but that helps the Flames more than anything. They need to cut salaries like Gio, Backlund and Lucic and move on, crowd favourites or not, they need to start thinking of doing what's right for the team not what's right for some players.
