He didn't make the playoffs last year, they lost to the 12th place Hawks in the qualifying round. When you look at his actual playoff numbers they are okay but nothing incredible. Look at his ES points in the playoffs and it looks pretty bad, especially considering how much icetime he eats up.

Sure and (I know you aren't implying otherwise) Hellebucyk is a big part of the Jets team a just turned 28 Vezina caliber goalie
Smith wasn't even horrible but the Oilers asset management in net is not great with an overpaid weak backup and stringing together hope on a 39 year old never really elite goaltender

McDavid is an amazing talent, but it's not rare for these types of guys to often need very specific skillsets to excel with.
Crosby is no different. Pittsburgh has brought in tons of guys to play with him and it often hasn't worked. He just seems to do better with the Bryan Rust's and Pascal Dupois of the world.
McDavid still PPG for his career in the playoffs, so it's not like he's "Bad" but the game tightens up and slows down in the playoffs and that's not his game.
He excels off the rush with fast pace and on the Powerplay. In the playoffs odd man rushes and PP's dry up.
Honestly if I'm playing McDavid in the playoffs I just sit back when he's on the ice. To me his game on the cycle isn't amazing (partially because outside of Draisaitl he doesn't have skilled linemates to cycle with), and if you just don't let him hit you on the rush you will limit his effectiveness.
McDavid is the most prolific player in the game but Crosby and Mackinnon are more well rounded in their skillsets for sure.

Very true.
You rarely see McDavid in a crowd for more than a fleeting second as he tries to slip through it.
Crosby is in the trenches pretty regularly.

The fact is McDavid took a step up as a defensive player this year, improving his slot defence. Draisaitl is a strong defender when he puts his mind to it. I don’t know what did or didn’t happen with Yzerman, but McDavid and Draisiatl continue to progress as two-way players. I’d like to see them both centre their own lines, as that is how Edmonton will get the most out of both of them. I expect we’ll see much more of that in 2021-22.
this is a particularly new hot fresh take...we'll see... (and isn't 'when he puts his mind to it' part of the problem? presumably almost any NHLer , especially with size can be a strong defender when they put their mind to it?)

I assume he is sending out a group text of "Let's go....golfing"
He will buy each person one Smirnoff ice which will heal all wounds. Note, he won't "ice" his teammates, that would be funny. He will just order each of them a Smirnoff ice.

Counterpoint: Patrick Kane and Nikita Kucherov are two of the most prolific playoff producers and neither is known for grinding.

There are lessons here for the Flames, including the top line, IMO.

Yup...he is great "when he puts his mind to it"....is just an amazing spin. That is quite literally the problem with both the MVP guys...they are not committed to 200' games and it was never as obvious as it was this last 4 games.
It is what we saw here with a couple guys the last 2 seasons. Our guys just dont have the same offensive chops so are rightfully blasted for it.
There just seems to be zero accountability among those who are tasked to hold the teams feet to the fire up North.

There are multiple ways to win and this one isn't a very reliable one because your guys are bound to have cold stretches even if their sh% is unnaturally high, everyone does. But it is a way to win in spurts, and that's all a 7 game series takes. It does require good goaltending... which, of course, they have.

I'm not sure why Ricardo is still here, given that literally all of his contributions to the forum are negative ones, but if he must be allowed to remain it's best to just not engage with him. Your efforts are wasted. He's not going to learn.

The Oilers stars are committed. Sometimes. It's a work in progress. But don't you dare say they are not good defensively!

Being a Flames fan, I was working up in Red Deer for Totem doing some updating to the store during this run. It was game 7 and Everybody was dressed in Oilers blue, I grabbed the intercom and yell out “Go Canes Go”, got dirtest looks from the staff as I left that day. Greatest feeling when I walked into the store the next day with a #### eating grin on my face.

Ron McLean waxes poetic far too much. Hes trying to romanticize the game but no one really cares. He hit the sweet spot IMO in the early to mid 2000s, then SN took over and gave him this weird platform.

13 points in 17 career playoff games is certainly NOT “ok” for a player like him.

Interpretations like that are honestly so silly.
Hockey has been a sport since the beginning that sometimes you play well or play better than the opposition and lose. Before we had advanced stats we had shots on goal.
"How can they lose when they out shot the Jets 39-17?" Happens all the time.
Better finish.
Better bounces.
Better goaltending.
It will never be 100% correlated, but it meets the eye test more often than not.

Ya it's called Hometown Hockey. I went to it with my kids team when it came to our town. What a made for TV joke the whole event was. No Ron sighting. He was in a trailer behind glass (in Red Deer which I believe is his hometown).
