I don't know if that is true about running a line. What I saw is that Leon was the only player that could work with McDavid so splitting them up was rarely a viable option. McDavid, for whatever number of reasons, doesn't seem to be able to develop an on ice relationship with other players so the Oilers struggle with building a proper line around McDavid.

That's fair. One thing you want in terms of a generational player is that he makes the players around him better. In the playoffs I don't think that's the case with McDavid. You'd think they could drop any guy in there who can skate and he'd get a ton of points. It doesn't happen.

Listening to Oilers radio right now: still whining about not getting penalties. “Black mark on the NHL”
They do realize that McDavid draws more penalties than literally anyone else in the league, right?
“Best player in the world”
Just comical.

Well he did average a point per game this year.
Last year, it was 2.25 per game.
Johnny should be so invisible.

Ever seen a ####in team think they were so good after being swept?
Just cause you have McDavid doesn't mean you should be immune from humility when a team shows you up, as a team.

Crosby has 4th line grinder style with 1st overall generational talent. That's probably why he's so good in the playoffs and when compared against McDavid, you can see where the latter is lacking. He doesn't like the grinding/mucking up style of the playoffs. Crosby excels in it.

I totally agree. McDavid is a machine but he is basically an island out there. He can't seem to work with any other players. Leon is the only guy he matches up with on the ice. It seems very tough to build a line or a team around McDavid in his current state. It has been mentioned by a lot of people already but his leadership is a big issue which is holding back the Oilers success.
It would be a very difficult decision but a blockbuster trade for McDavid might be the best move for Edmonton.

he was definitely visible- but the stats probably need to be taken in perspective- he averaged 30 minutes a game and was a minus player (yes minus is a very limited stat)
but anyways he was on the ice most of the time and seems like most of the action at both ends of the ice took place when he was on
it's hard to blame him for his team's shortcomings- and he needs to play the way he does (offensively) given the make up of the team- but its certainly fair to question his 'leadership' and other aspects to his game are not being refined- and its hard to imagine that this can change as long as the team is constructed this way- which is fine by me

What does that have to do with this series? The Oilers would be thanking God if they had 2 lines and 4 dmen, instead they have 2 forwards and 1 defenseman.

Hate to say it but advanced stats are for losers. Oilers basically swept the series if only advanced stats counted in the games outcome.
Vegas finally broke through the fancy stats and dominated the Wild last night as the Wild forced a game 6.
Tampa finally broke through and won fancy stats for the first time in the series lost game the game 4-1 and are headed into game 6
There will be the advanced stats pointing to the Jets losing the next series in 4 games be it against Toronto or even Montreal
PS Toronto has been beating Montreal in Fancy Stats. So the advanced stats guys can point to that and say see we were right
|
This is such a bad take.
I get so sick of people pointing to advanced stats as "wrong" or even better "for losers" because they don't line up with the final results.
Interpretations like that are honestly so silly.
Hockey has been a sport since the beginning that sometimes you play well or play better than the opposition and lose. Before we had advanced stats we had shots on goal.
"How can they lose when they out shot the Jets 39-17?" Happens all the time.
Better finish.
Better bounces.
Better goaltending.
It will never be 100% correlated, but it meets the eye test more often than not.
Hellebucyk had a .956 save percentage in the four games. The Oilers probably outplayed the Jets, like the Flames outplayed the Ducks in getting swept four years ago.
They got out goaltended.

If I have it correct the wicked misses that would beat the goalie and go an inch wide or hit the post are not high danger chances and hitting the goalies crest or glove from the same spot is a HD chance.
Do the times that Morrissey gets his stick on the puck as the Oiler shoots from a HD spot count? HD attempted shot on goal?
|
Nope.
Any shot attempt in the home plate area coming off a rebound, tip, or direct pass are considered high danger shot attempts.
Doesn't matter if you hit the crest, the goal post, shoot wide, or score.

Stephen Brunt this morning on the Fan telling it like it is. Basically that the Oilers are a 2 man team and won't win anything in the playoffs unless they figure out a way to add some depth. Also said the Oilers aren't even close to being on the same level as teams like Boston, Colorado, or even the Leafs. It's so refreshing listening to someone in the media who doesn't drink the Oiler kool-aid.

**sportsnet is replaying last night's game - definite "must see tv!"
i had to laugh this morning - i was talking to a customer who is a HUGE oil fan. a week ago "the oilers are going all the way - this is their year!". this morning it was "hmmmm... i don't know... after watching some of the other playoff series i don't think it matters who makes it out of the north division, they aren't going anywhere!"
bahahahahahaha!! don't get me wrong - i totally agree that the north is a butter soft division... but the opinion that now that the oilers are done there is no way the north div team will do anything is hilarious!

Just crazy that he ended up 3rd (3mins shy of 1st) while the game only went to the 3rd OT. Jones and Zubov, who are 1st and 2nd, had their games go to the 5th OT.

So Pierre McGuire was on radio in Ottawa this morning and absolutely roasted the Oilers from top to bottom.
Of course PomPom Staples couldn't get to the keyboard fast enough to spin and defend every single point made. Its really embarrassing.
McDavid and Draisaitl are just fine defensively thanks very much. LOL

I would hope that Connor is calling his teammates and apologizing for yelling at them for half the game yesterday when once again it was him coughing up the puck leading to the GWG.
