The Flames nearly found a way to snag defeat from the jaws of victory.
Fortunately, Edler decided to put career goal #100 into his own net in OT.

Brutal third period. Flames were better 5 on 5 than with the PP. They couldn't clear the puck on the PK either. Just an awful period.
|
Not overly surprising our PP sucked as we were rolling out the likes of Leivo, Ritchie, Simon, Lucic and Ryan.
Not saying PP1 was any better obviously but still. Even Lucic only has 2PPP on the season and he was a fixture on the second unit all year.
The second unit’s failure was essentially inevitable.

I hate this team and club so much. Why are they so. Stupid and lazy? How do they not understand that winning at this point is actually losing? There's no way that winning now changes the fact that they're objectively total ####ing losers and terrible excuses for pro hockey players. Honestly I hope all of them pack their ####, don't want a si gle person currently in the club here next season.

Before anyone says garbage about culture- too late this team as the most garbage losing lower culture out of any team currently in the league. Winning meaningless games only when they're actually 100% worthless (historically so since the playoffs have already started) just further proves that these morons don't have an iota of brainpower and only care about personal statistics at most. #### all of them.

I am not certain how anyone can criticize a team for actually winning, even when it hurts their draft picks.
Do you really want them to purposely lose?
It’s not like they are playing like a juggernaut, rolling over a strong opponent.
They are playing the Canucks, a team that has played more games during this period than any other, and is obviously tired and playing out the string.
Credit Sutter for keeping them focused enough to at least beat the Canucks.
I would hope they could beat the Canucks considering the circumstances.

I can already see the GM's season ending conference after Flames win the next 2 games.
"Look, it's a process. We finished 2 points out of a playoff spot in a real fast, ultra competitive, highly skilled, big boys Canadian division. The US teams down there haven't had to deal with Covid since Biden came in. It would not surprise me if one the Canadian teams is in the final four, thats how tough this division was."
"Higher draft Picks? who cares? look how the highest draft pick in Flames history turned out. He cost his new team a win last night. We don't want those kind of bums."

Well, I was hoping they were not trying last night
Because if they were, this team is in much more trouble than I thought
Imagine a team like that winning a real hockey game?

The problem is you think the players care about the team picking 7th instead of 13th they don’t give a crap. The gripe with the organization is playing your best lineup each game. This is all on Sutter he doesn’t coach to lose it is not in his DNA.
Neither team is trying that hard out there it is not like the Flames are bringing their A game here

Yeah, this is exactly my problem. Our players don't give a crap about the success of the franchise, they give a crap about statistics and image from moment to moment. That's why they get dominated by real pros.

For the people that want them to lose intentionally, put yourselves in their shoes.
Your boss comes to you and says "hey, we need you to put in a half-a$$ effort for the next few weeks. Write some bad articles, design some really bad artwork, make sure your videos are crap. There's a small chance that this will help our organization 3 or 4 years from now." Everyone will still know it's your work and you can't tell them why you've done such a lousy job. Oh and btw, maybe the new guy takes your job in the end.

I think I've changed gears completely. I used to white-knight and proclaim I'll never cheer for losses. But I've come to realize you need to play within the parameters set out for you.
In the European sports model, teams scratch and claw to avoid relegation (i.e.: elimination from their current tier) and so clubs are incentivized to play for wins. In the NHL, why would you play for wins with how the draft lottery rules are set up? The minute a GM is honest with himself that his team will miss, you should do everything in your power to tank. Playing for wins is actually the dumbest thing you can do.

Are you serious?
Pro athletes and coaches are like race horses. They only know how to GO. Players will never (read: should never) give half ass efforts because that will damage their personal potential for monetary gain on future contracts. Coaches don't know how to coach to lose.
The group of fans who are advocating for tanking are saying things like rest every single veteran, call up all the minor league scrubs, and play your backup and third goalies. Better yet, trade away your stars for volume of picks/players and rebuild at the same time.
No one's industry is regulated like pro sports is, so your comparison is just silly. No one has a guaranteed contract, and you can't be traded to your competitor by your boss LOL.

I don’t expect the players to play to lose. I expect the GM to be looking long-term in who gets called up and dressed, and I expect the coach to do what the GM tells him to do.
But mostly I just find it comical how much better this team plays when there’s nothing on the line.

If we go full rebuild I'll watch this kind of game next 2-3 years. If you don't go the rebuild we'll watch same type games next 5-10 years.

Guys, we should look at the bright side and concentrate on the positives!
It was a meaningless game, played by disinterested players at the end of a futile season.
Not a lot of real valuable insight available on this one.
