Taking a while to get to 5000

If the Kings are willing to move Byfield in a package for Eichel, not only would that be palatable for Eichel (Kings are rebuilding, but its L.A. and a desirable location to play) but the Sabres also get another 2OA C at league minimum to basically get a redo with.
The Flames don't have that to offer.

I would disagree that "Turcotte and Kaliyev are grade A prospects.".
Byfield is a grade A prospect in that organization. I would say Turcotte and Kaliyev are decidedly a tier below. They are good prospects though.

Agreed, Byfield would HAVE to be part of the package.
But even still Byfield isn't a guaranteed NHL point producer either, so its still a bit of a risk.

The only reason anyone is speculating about trading for Eichel is because Eichel and his agent have hinted to the Sabres that he no longer wants to play for the team he’s under contract with. Star players can force the hands of teams who hold their rights. We just saw that with Laine and Dubois.
If Eichel demonstrates he’s willing to sour his relationship with the Sabres in order to force a move, why wouldn’t he do the same to the Flames? Any team dealing with the Sabres will want to be confident that Eichel will be happy longterm in his new destination. And the reality is Calgary (along with Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Ottawa) is regarded as an undesirable location by most players.

It's a way different situation. Quitting on a team and ownership group who has done nothing but make poor choices for the last 6 years of your career while you showed loyalty to them =/ quitting because it's an undesirable location.
If a team makes a big pitch for him and brings him in to be the golden boy and to build around, no doubt the clock restarts.
Sitting at home instead of playing for a team that acquired you is disasterous. 1 youre not getting paid during the hightimes of your career, 2 you're not upping your future value.
Presumably Buffalo wants to move him because they no longer want to build around him, for whatever reason.
I just don't see how the two situations (eichel's current demand to leave Buffalo vs him sitting out entirely rather than playing for an acquiring team) are at all comparable. But please, Cliff and Cobra, enlighten me at how they are at all the same?
When was the last time a player refused to report to the team he was traded to?

Remember when Carter was traded to Columbus? He proceeded to pout and play so badly that he forced a trade in only one year, to LA to be with his buddy Richards.

Also, I want to point out how both of you eagerly jumped on the Calgary is an undesirable location train, something you're both want to do at nearly every juncture. So I shouldn't be surprised, but get new material. Calgary has proven time and time again to buck that opinion.

Failure of Columbus to make the acquired star happy.
Also that didn't work out super great for Carter overall- he was never looked at as a star performer again, was never asked to carry the load again, and generally is looked at as a lazy mercurial player with questionable legacy. Yeah, he got his cups.
I think Eichel wants much more than that. This kid has ego.

I’m not anti-Calgary. And there’ve been players who love it here. But it’s not a stretch to say it’s harder than average to get players to come here, and it’s certainly on NTC lists more often than many teams.

Buffalo doesn’t want to move Eichel, anymore than Columbus wanted to move Dubois. But an unhappy star is an untenable situation.

It rarely happens because teams don’t want to trade for disgruntled star players who they aren’t confident will want to play for them.

Name some examples where Calgary has proven time and time again this is a bad opinion?
Kadri wouldn’t come here despite the team coming off a 107pt season
Markstrom is the highest profile UFA signed since Bouwmeester in 2009
Tavares wouldn’t take a meeting here
Bishop blocked a trade here
A NMC and 5x5.25M deal was required to get Dennis freakin Wideman to sign here
Outside of Lucic which player do you know actually waived a NTC to come here?
A small city in Western Canada with the worst building in the league and a team with a taskmaster coach and no elite talent likely puts Calgary in the bottom 3 right now for desirability and at best they are always bottom 10.

See also Mark Stone, who wouldn’t talk to Calgary about an extension (and the trade collapsed) versus being happy to come to terms with LV so they could complete a deal. Despite the fact his brother played here.

Didn't Scott Niedermeyer also shun Calgary?
I am sure it happens to other small market teams. There are examples of players that like it. Regehr didn't want to leave and had to be talked into it. Glencross didn't want to play anywhere else. If the team was competitive, I don't think keeping Iginla would have been an issue. Joel Otto left but then settled in Calgary after retiring.

If there's one thing Calgary can offer Eichel that other teams can't, it's to put Eichel up against McDavid in the Battle of Alberta. I doubt Eichel has any delusions about being at McDavid's level right now, but who knows, maybe a head-to-head rivalry could stoke some fire in him.

How was it a failure of Columbus exactly? What didn’t they do? Carter was just unhappy about being traded at all IMO, especially to Columbus.

Well he wanted 3 things:
-Win a Cup
-Play with Rob
-Play for a Western team
Calgary would have been 2 for 3 at least. But Burke told him, "Well, I'm the only guy in the league that can offer you all 3..."

As I recall, Bishop ultimately decided he was willing to come here but something fell apart. He was fully expecting to come here at one point, including negotiating a contract.

Kadri's rejection of the trade had nothing to do with the city, if he's to be taken at face value.

Ben Bishop felt jerked around so the 3rd time Treliving tried to land him he told him to go fly a kite basically.
