Shiny New Penny + confirmation bias = 400+ games of mediocrity
Is that your equation?! The Bennett fanboys are fawning like they were after his first games as a Flames and can't figure out what went wrong.
My post was not really about Bennett.
Someone suggested that since Bennett is producing this year after a 12 point season, Monny could do the same next year.
I just pointed out that Bennett was producing differently because of different usage. Monny has failed to produce over more than two years with premium usage.

I dug into this a while ago...of course Johnny excelled in a tournament with All-star game level physicality.
Quote:
A pre-season best on best tournament 5 years ago.
4 pts in 3 Pre-tourney games agains Europe(x2) and the Czechs. Chara was the only bruiser on Europe; there were a few stout guys on CZE but I doubt those games were particularly physical.
4pts in 3 games in the tourney. RUS, SWE, FIN. Again, a handful of guys known to be physical, but these teams were generally small and fast.
I don't recall exactly, but I suspect physicality was closer to an all-start game than an NHL game, which isn't to say that the games weren't hard fought.
Gostibehere posted 4pts in the tournament games, too. Is he still the elite offensive D-man he once seemed?

I still think it's worth it to keep Johnny, if we could get a fast, play-driving C to play with him. He also looks good playing for Sutter-faster, up-tempo, aggressive hockey, and Sutter knows how to deploy his troops.
We wouldn’t have to break the bank for this one... what if we dealt Monahan +2022 2nd (FLA) for Kopitar? The Kings then flip Monahan + Turcotte + Kaliyev + 2022 2nd (FLA) for Eichel. The Kings would then have Eichel/Byfield/Vilardi center depth, and the Sabres build around Cozens and Turcotte as their top 6 centers. Flames get a top C for 2/3 years to compete with Sutter at helm.
I know Wright and Bedard would be better to go for than Kopitar, but I just don’t see management doing that unfortunately. So, Kopitar as our 1C for the time being would make sense:

I don’t even know what to say to you if you think trading for a 34 yo is a good idea..
Kopitar is one of the best defensive centers in the game, something we sorely lack. He is a huge upgrade on Monahan, and I’d be happy to pay 10m on a player like Kopitar than 6.375m on someone like Monahan.
Evgeny Kuznetsov was a healthy scratch. It sounds like it has had some issues this year. He's having a down year in terms of production and durability.
7.8 mill cap hit for 4 more years after this year.
Just turned 28. He has a 15 team no-trade list.
Do I think the Flames should try to get him? No really, but I think he makes more sense than Kopitar.
And I would probably trade Monahan for him, mostly for the sake of change. At least Kuznetsov once had 32 points in 24 playoff games. It would be interesting to see what he would do with Gaudreau.
Sutter might hate him. But at the same time, Sutter won with players like Richards and Doughty, who apparently had ... similar issues.

In case you haven't noticed, this team doesn't need a f'n defensive center, especially a 34 year old one making $10m for the next 3 years.
This team needs a dynamic offensive #1 center or we'll be talking about this teams mediocrity for the next 10 years...again!

Let’s help the Kings land Eichel, meanwhile we’ll take a 34 who makes 10+ mil per season who’s slowed down offensively.
Or we could use said asset to try and land Eichel ourselves.
The Kings have the assets, we don’t. They can even up their offer to their 1st in either this year or the next rather than Florida’s 2nd. Turcotte and Kaliyev are grade A prospects.
We’re all looking at Kopitar’s cap hit and age. Sure, disadvantageous. He probably won’t waive either, but let’s assume he waives to play in Calgary for 3 years and then returns to LA to finish his career.
This is a player tied for 20th in the league in points (49 right now), plays hard defensively, and would be a player to at least help us go for it while Sutter is here. Again, I’d rather go for Bedard or Wright, but you and I both know our management doesn’t want to accept a rebuild.
So, why not trade a struggling player to LA to Buffalo while we grab a center that in my opinion is the better player than Jack because of the defensive play. Imagine teams having to matchup against Kopitar, Lindholm (at 2C!) and Backlund at 3C. Good luck. Now imagine Gaudreau with Kopitar. It’s definitely worth a shot.
I’d rather we at least try and go for it with Sutter here than try some lateral move (this isn’t a lateral move), and after those 2 years are over if we’ve made zero progress then maybe we can sell Kopitar to someone else in his last season. We can then officially start the rebuild. Maybe we won’t find a Bedard in future drafts, but we’re at least going to be getting our fair share of opportunity to gain a franchise player in future years.

Kopitar would immediately become the Flames’ best forward. I don’t think the Flames should be pursuing a win now strategy, but if they were they could do a lot worse than bringing in Kopitar.

I disagree completely.
We have far better proven assets then the kings have, Turcotte and Kaliev have proven nothing in the NHL to date, they may not even amount to anything in the NHL, they may be Top 6 forwards but how can we be sure they'll become NHL stars? Its a huge gamble, I wouldn't trade away my #1C and star forward for a 4 rolls of the dice.
A flames offer of Monahan, Tkachuk, Pelletier and a 1st this year or Turcotte, Kaliev and 2 firsts?
Buffalo would be stupid to take the Kings offer, when they could have 2 guaranteed 60+ pt forwards NHL ready now.
The Flames really don't need defensive help, we need offensive skilled guys who can put up big points. That's not what Kopitar is, and he's on the wrong side of 30 to boot which mean's he's only going to slow down.
Johnny shines with offensively gifted centers, I don't see how bringing on a slow-footed defensive center is going to all of a sudden spark production through the roof, unless you're also finding a star RW to go on that line who can score. If you use Zebulon then you've just crushed the so called C depth you just boasted about.
Then on top of that you have to HOPE Johnny re-signs with CGY on a team friendly deal to play with another defensive center? I just don't see it sadly, I'd rather give w/e Buffalo wants (within reason) and go after Eichel ourselves rather than give L.A the best asset to go after Eichel.
This would be a CRIPPLING move, and would set us back even further. We need to blow it up, not try and hang on a bit longer and stick to this mediocre hockey we've all watched for the last decade. Go big and re-build/re-tool with a STAR center who's young.
Why does anyone care where Eichel wants to play. He doesnt have trade protection in his contract. It's up to buffalo. From there, it's up to the acquiring team to make him want to stay.
His contract also has 5 more years on it still after this one. Seems like a pointless conversation and just another way to throw darts at the flames/calgary.
