I hope the guy doesn't ever win anything. I'm not ashamed to admit I actively cheer against him.

Carolina had Hamilton too so it's not much of a change. An offensive RD doesn't want to be second fiddle to Dougie Hamilton.
These guys don't want spots, they want huge roles. Because they believe in themselves, and know how much poor usage can not only tank their careers, but their chance to legitimately develop.
We haven't even been able to give Juuso Valimaki a huge role.

I remember hearing an interview an the gist basically was that the Fox’s advisor (agent) “told” Treliving that Fox was most likely not going to sign in Calgary

Oh I agree. But Fox used the rules as they are so all the background noise doesn't change the fact he wasn't signing anywhere but NYR. The Canes knew it too.

Maybe, but we don't know that for certain. He wasn't going to sign in Carolina either so use that for what you will.
IMO he wasn't signing anywhere but the Rangers. And he was pretty honest about it it looks like.
I do respect that about fox, he gave them an out and we used it. Got two core foundation players not much older than him.

He's such a jerk for using the system that is/was at his disposal. Imagine the horror of a contractor choosing where they want to work, when they are fully entitled to do so! The Flames, like every other team know there is an inherent risk when drafting NCAA prospects, especially in the earlier rounds.
As much as it sucks, the Flames received compensation and made out reasonably well. There's no point in viewing him as a lost asset when he was never really here to begin with. Nothing more to see here.

I think we can falter the Flames mantra of "over ripening" and making it nearly impossible to steal top spots from vets.
To me they're a bit behind on that.
They corner themselves with bloated contracts that they can't move for good value and stifle their prospects because reasons.

Meh, he can use whatever legal loophole he wants as that's his right. Doesn't change my feeling of bitterness towards him as a fan. I have no issues booing the crap out of him everytime he plays here.
Now that said, him as a piece to getting Lindholm and Hanifin back definitely lessens the blow. And guys like Pinder suffer from recency bias. We weren't bashing the trade two years ago when Lindholm was putting up almost 80 points in his first year as a Flame. And Tre signed him to a sweetheart long term deal too before he upped his game, so that's a bonus.

Even looking back at it you can't even say the Flames were skewered. They drafted an elite defenceman who wouldn't sign, but turned him into a top line forward and potentially a first pairing defenceman.
There's much worse things to get ticked off over with this organization.

Still think we didn’t lose the trade although obviously it’s high value for high value:
- Top 4 D-man 3 years younger than Dougie signed longer term and still improving. Canes will have to give Dougie 8-9mil to keep him
- Best forward on the team signed to an even better deal
- Fox wasn’t signing anywhere buy NYR
- Ferland was great for a year but injuries caught up to him
Probably one of those rare trades where neither team regrets it 2 years later.

NY isn't lame and overrated. It's our bank accounts shortcomings which does not allows us to take full advantage of the NY experience.
When you're wealthy and are taking a helicopter in to work from the Hamptons every day and have a weekend home in Miami which you go to in a private jet, NY is a pretty freaking sweet place to live.
I know this because I have friends who do this. One of them took a helicopter on a Sunday from Hamptons to NYC. Paid $10K. Just to party for 2-3 hours.

Not a fan of Fox's Harvard vibe but can't blame Fox for pursuing his own interests within the framework given to him.
I think Flames could have gotten a better return, but more importantly the Flames could have picked more often. Before last year's two 3rd rounders (one of which they wasted on the anti-Fox, Boltmann) they picked once in the 3rd round since 2016, Fox's draft.
Maybe if they kept their picks they would have unearthed another Fox and this loss wouldn't sting so bad.

I do take solace in the fact that the Rangers kind of screwed themselves over by signing Trouba (a second pairing dman) to that albatross contract. If Fox does indeed continue to trend upwards, as Fox's agent, how can you ask for anything less than the $8M per year Trouba's making?

Really makes you realize how much money Tony DeAngelo cost himself by being an idiot.

Pure BS that he didn’t sign here because of depth.
Rangers had Trouba and DeAngelo when he signed there. The kid had insane leverage because he was going to an Ivy League school and if he stayed and finished his degree he could pick his spot.
The Flames were trading Hamilton regardless and by several accounts a deal with the Blues was very close. I am now speculating but I think Treliving preferred the Canes deal and when it was confirmed to him that Fox was not signing he made the trade with Carolina. I think had Fox advised he would sign then the Flames make a different deal because they knew what they had with Fox.

I doubt that is correct. He not just wanted a role, he wanted to play PP in front of great players. Points mean money and he's going to cash in big time.
It's pretty well known he indicated he wasn't signing.

On top of getting Hanifin and Lindholm, another silver lining, our amateur scouts seem to have been killing it recently with the our later picks. Regardless of who he's playing for now, our scouts correctly identified a player who at 23 is a #1D and a Norris favorite, and we got him with a 3rd round pick to boot.
Props to those guys.

It's like you correctly identified Gamestop was going to $400 but your brokerage wouldn't let you buy it
Still a stupid loophole - probably even more frustrating for the scouts vouched for him
