I do think it's time to move on from Johnny, but it sucks what a mess they have turned this situation into.

For years Johnny was one of the best rush players in the league. He was right at the top of the league for even strength offense. Then Colorado blew us up and we have been chasing this grind it out, dump and chase, cycle type of hockey that has completely neutered him.

I have no doubts that when Johnny gets moved he will instantly bounce back to being a point per game player if not better. Grab him late in your hockey pools next year folks.

You can’t just claim a guy if your team and taxi squad are full. You’d have to put a guy on waivers... and it would have to be the NEXT DAY. So, too late. He’s cleared. Making waiver claims isn’t some super easy thing to do where every team can pluck a guy they like. More likely than not you would need to make an internal move first. This is why, even in typical years, we see people clear waivers and then get traded.
That’s not for the guy making minimum salary

If they want him they can make room, it’s not hard for guys like him who are making nothing

Some teams may have problems but many are not at that level

Kylington good is a myth

Kylington is not a top 8 d-man on any team in the league.

In general it seems that there are lot of over-rated players on the Flames. It will make for a huge disappointment at the inability to cash in at the trading dead-line.

Basically there are not a lot of players that wouldn't be considered reclamation projects on other teams.

How anyone could think Kylington has any value is beyond me. He was literally passed over by every team in the league not long ago.

He has one good attribute and the rest below average to bad. I wouldn’t even re-sign him tbh.

It is when your roster is full. Salary aside. You need to remove a player from the roster, and you can’t just do that without going through the waiver procedures yourself.

Not to mention, claiming him and then trying to reassign him and putting him through waivers again.

Teams passing on waivers players doesn’t mean they have zero value.

Not disagreeing with the Bennett sentiment, and with the benefit of hindsight, that Friedman announcement seemed to derail the Flames' season, but has it ever been confirmed that Bennett officially asked for a trade?

I thought it was further clarified that Bennett was frustrated with his ice time and deployment and that perhaps a fresh start would be mutually beneficial. Then when Sutter was hired everyone was talking about a fresh start.

I'm sure it was partial damage control on the part of the team (thanks Friedman) but compared to other players in other situation around the league, it didn't sound like a formal request from Bennett. It almost sounded like a non Alan Walsh version of the Frolik situation. Which, mind you still ended up in a trade.

I just had the feeling with Sutter coming in that all bets were off.

You can't blame Friedman for reporting what he is told, its his job.

Darren Ferris stated it and since he is Bennetts agent, he is speaking for his client.

When asked directly, Sam had an opportunity to deny it and clear the air.

Here was his response

Yeah, I don't have it out for him or anything, and really a more mentally tough group should be able to deal with distractions like that.

It just seems like the Bennett trade thing and that series against Vancouver where Markstrom lost his marbles and got injured was the beginning of the end of this season.

Let them be pissed. GMs should not let their decisions be warped by the sunk cost fallacy, and the last thing they should be worried about is what fans think of a trade.

Ruthless asset-management isn’t a crowd pleaser, but it’s a winning strategy in the long run.

Ooh, me next

How about when Johnny hit Monny in the head with a puck in warm up?

How’s the team done since then?

Some of you need to stop obsessing over Bennett. Bennett and his 10-13 minutes a game is not the cause of or answer to any of the Flames' problems.

If there's a schism in the room, I'll bet money that it starts and ends with Tkachuk. Chucky is the $7M star and the cocky, young hot shot that was touted as the future captain.

The Flames are 12-18-2 since the reported players-only meeting. If Treliving or Sutter can resolve that situation, they're probably fixing a big part of the problem.

If Chucky is playing like he usually does, the Flames are probably a .500 team this year, even with all the other warts.

I secretly hoped in 2014 Sam Bennett wouldn't be a better player than my new favorite Flame, Sean Monahan.

This is all on me guys, I'm sorry.

Did you make this wish on a cursed monkey’s paw? Might explain why Monahan’s game has become such a dumpster fire.

Seems like a pretty reasonable response to me.

Multiple things can be true at the same time. I doubt many teammates were peturbed at all; they would understand his situation.

I think Walsh actually did the team a favour. If they don't qualify him he'll definitely go somewhere else. Generated some interest without Brad having to put him on the block himself.

In fact I believe there is a split in the room because of it.

It may be entirely coincidence but the club was 4-3-1 when the request happened IIRC. Then he was sat for a game or 2.

Since that time, they are 11-16-2 i believe.

They certainly do not play for one another which is a huge indication there is no chemistry and probably friction within. Maybe its not Bennett still being here but it 's something.

Darryl will identify it and Treliving will address it....just not going to make a difference for this season but hopefully cleans the slate for next year.
I agree that this is a chemistry issue - major dressing room problems is my guess.

Maybe it was the trade request, maybe it was the incident with Tkachuk after his temper-tantrum that first Toronto game when no one had his back, maybe its something else.

But IMO when the entire team falls off a cliff like this, it's because they aren't a team and have some major issues internally.

Or maybe this is just the result of the team making the playoffs 2 years straight for the first time, and they are too tired to bother trying again.

Seems to have been the issue all along. Came up even with Hamilton.

I’m done with the group. I will happily see anybody on this team traded away to shake up the roster. First time in my life as a Flames fan I’ve been open to just trading anyone. Absolutely anyone. They know who the problems are, trade them away.
