Pretty clear what this teams issue is.

If we combined all of the projected goal totals for Lindholm, Monahan, and Tkachuk it would be the same as having Ovechkin on a bad year... This team needs an elite talent badly.
Also, I think we've been really hurt by Brodie leaving, Gio taking a step back, Andersson having not materialized into the player we thought he would (yet), Valimaki struggling.

Bobrovsky has been pretty much a total disaster for Florida with one of the worst contracts in the league. Holtby has been bad and Markstrom looks like he's fallen off a cliff in the last month. Genuinely curious if this is actually a tnd with these signings.
|
Last year was a disaster for Bob but he' s having a nice bounce back this year as evidenced by where Florida is in the standings compared to this bunch of over rated losers in Calgary.

That's why I'm not as down on Markstrom as others as even the best goaltenders have seasons that are below their normal standards. He came to a new team in a pandemic with no proper training camp and preseason. To make matters worse his new team is on the decline under a questionable head coach that was playing him nearly every night. That coach gets fired mid-season so he's now working under a 2nd head coach in a shortened pandemic season so it's probably not the greatest environment for a goaltender to fit in with his new team. It's why I'm not overly worried about Valimaki despite his struggles as this has been a difficult season for a lot of players.

He's still getting heavily outplayed by a 850k backup, second year in a row. That contract is as close to unmovable as you'll find.
But really my point was to ask if someone actually knows how well these contracts for +30 year old goaltenders have worked out in the past. For skaters they seem to have turned into disasters quite often.

Is this the worst season that the flames have ever had? Genuine question. This is worse than the season when we got 4th overall

Yeah, I think the abysmal lack of talent on our backend due to the combo of these factors has really destroyed our offensive scheme.
Sucks that Andersson looks maxed out as a ~5 dman. Gio is dropping like a rock. Valimaki looks like Bambi half the time. Hanifin-tanev are a great second pair but hardly game breakers and there's not much offense being generated there...
It really says something that Mike Stone has stepped in so cold and looked like one of the better defenders. I'm ready to eat a huge brodie crow; seems like he was the only thing keeping these limp noodles together back there.

I would say it’s worse than the year we drafted Bennett. Bennett year I knew we would be drafting high. This year I didn’t think they had a chance at cup but thought they were good enough to make playoffs. Big disappointment.

I think it's up there with the most disappointing Flames seasons ever, given the expectations.

Have we had a single positive from this season?
I cant think of a single player you would say "Took a positive step forward" this year.
This year is a complete disaster unless we win the draft lottery !

Yep, it might not be the worst season but it's definitely the most embarrassing one I can remember. There's no reason why this team shouldn't atleast be competing for second in the division.
The playoffs in 2019 was the most embarrassed I've been as fan but I think this season tops it because atleast the torture stopped after five games.

Chris Tanev is probably the only bright spot on this team on any given night and really the only player I am enjoying watching these days. I totally get what Canuck fans saw in him and why they were upset he left.

IMO, the biggest culprit of lack of competitiveness throughout this season has been Monahan, but its interesting to hear Sutter indicate that it's not a work ethic that is the problem (something I've been pointing at on a few on this team) but rather an inability to keep up to pace for a full 60. That's interesting to me.
By his comments though, he's clearly not happy with the top players (namely Monhan and Gaudreau), but seems to be a bit easier on Johnny than Monahan (though he is choosing his words carefully). There were a number of times last night that his inability to check closely on the opposition allowed for easy breakouts, scoring chances and goals. On that Simmonds goal for example, he failed to tightly check the high man. allowing for an easy pass to the front of the net..I thought that plays like that were a competitiveness issue, but Sutter seems to be indicating that he simply can't keep up.
Honestly something I hadn't thought of.

I've kind of been wondering if this is kind of thing is a reaction to the playoff loss to Colorado? It seems to me that the team as a whole has taken the approach of "we need to leave something in the tank for when the playoffs start", which has resulted in a lack of effort or jump during the season because they're "saving themselves".

Agree with this. And with him, it's not like we can look forward to any improvement, just have to hope he keeps it together over the rest of his contract.

Over an 82 game schedule I think Mangiapane would have 24 goals and 43 points.
So I think he's a positive too.

I think there's more bright spots than that.
Mangiapnne: Has solidified himself as a top 6 player IMO
Hannafin: Has solidified himself as a #3 defensemen IMO
Tanev:Exactly what you said
But that's it.
But honestly, determining that your top end players are not good enough to compete is a step forward IMO. It's clear now. It's not coaching. It's not because so and so isn't playing with so and so. Its simply that they're not good enough to compete with other team top end players.
No need to panic though. Those players need to go away so that a different culture (and different leaders) emerge. It'll happen.

Have we had an all time worst season, no, we've had teams with worse then a .438 winning percentage.
Is this the all time most dissapointing season, yeah, I'd say since 1981-82, the year after the semi final run when the team completely fell apart, and the locker room basically hated each other and the coach.
