They don't need to start from scratch.

The core needs to finally change. They had their chance and it's not working. I've been open for it to change since choking against Colorado. I understood giving it another shot last season but it should have changed this past offseason. Now there's no excuse to give it another chance.

So they aren’t giving up high danger chances are more frequency, just aren’t getting a big save.
 |
Which lines up with what I’ve seen.

I actually don’t think their defense has been that bad, but when they break down, boy do they break down. Every opportunity seems to be going in.

I agree that it would be nice to get a few more big saves but I think Markstrom is taking way too much heat from some fans and the media. To me it’s a case of “yes, he could be better”, but some fans are already suggesting the signing was a mistake or that he sucks and I think that’s totally unfair.

We get a goal from Gaudreau, Monahan, or Tkachuk in the first two periods and it changes the entire complexion of the game. On the list of problems with the Flames I think the goaltending is MAYBE middle of the pack. Our best forwards are getting clowned nightly.

JG is no MS. Johnny is afraid out there. Marc was never afraid.

That makes sense. But still interesting that the Canucks wanted to roll the dice with the unproven Demko. Although I recall Demko’s series being all-time against the Knights. So the Canucks likely had that fresh in their mind.

Im sure the debate can roll on about who’s to blame, but it’s hard not to be concerned about Markstrom and his contract. He’s only had two seasons where he played 60 games or more. And in those seasons he has very pedestrian numbers(averaging a 2.75 and .912) So are we looking at a career average goalie who has injury issues? Or someone who parlayed a career year into a UFA contract?

What's the last +30 goaltender free agency signing that has worked out?

Bobrovsky has been pretty much a total disaster for Florida with one of the worst contracts in the league. Holtby has been bad and Markstrom looks like he's fallen off a cliff in the last month. Genuinely curious if this is actually a trend with these signings.

So Markstrom wasn’t too bad. There was a bad rebound leading to a goal
First goal, Spezza puts a quick shot inside the post
Second, the leading goal scorer in the league has time and space and no pressure
Third, Simmonds was reasonably contained by the D, he worked for it
Fourth, I understand the rebound but I don’t like it. (I miss Kipper where he gloved everything he could, and everything else went in the corner)
Fifth - well placed by Tavares, I haven’t had a good look to see if Markstrom saw it

I really don’t like the fourth. I have personally not been enamoured with Markstrom’s rebound placement for a while now.

And at the other end, Campbell was fortunate twice that his D stopped pucks at the line, but he got enough of them such that they as a team could keep it out

Then he had some 10 bell saves, like a nice glove, I think on Backlund, and then another on Tkachuk, that made a difference when it mattered.

So not a classic goaltenders’ duel, but the Flames had the second best goalie tonight.

 Again

With the 5th overall pick the Calgary Flames are proud to select

Meanwhile, the Flames let Talbot walk and he has 92.4% on the season, is on a team-friendly contract, and has a career 91.6%.

You honestly think Talbot would have those numbers here? Talbot had a disaster of a season last time he played behind a disaster of a team too

Every team has break downs and gives up chances, They just aren’t getting any big saves.

He can be better sure but my eyes are the evidence. Most teams clear the front of the net for one.

The metrics are based on situation (shot location and context), but do not include the time and space or shot location

I see sub optimal rebound placement as a problem for Markstrom, but also a lot of shooters given open lanes, time and space to place their shots
