My eyes see a goalie who has lost all confidence, who is playing small when there are scrambles in front and who is having a hard time tracking the puck. Every save is a bit of a battle for Markstrom right now.
Let’s look at the goals tonight:
1) Spezza - Bad coverage by the dmen but Markstrom still looks small in his net and is playing very passive. No real fault on Markstrom here IMO.
2) Matthews - Top of the circle, nice play by him and Nylander on the rush but that’s still a saveable shot. Matthews beats a lot of goalies clean from there though, so we will give him a pass on that one too.
3) Simmonds - Honestly he should save this one. Super late reading the developing play, should be able to get across to get a pad on the soft deflection from a falling down Simmonds.
Didn’t track the puck well at all and seems to lose his net a bit. There should not be that much room at the back door and the dmen were draped all over Simmonds leading to it being a soft deflection. Not like Simmonds was wide open back door and able to hammer it home.
A horrible time to give up a goal right after they tie it.
4) Matthews - Defense needs to do a better job of clearing out, but the whole play starts because he doesn’t catch what should have been a routine save and bobbles the rebound right in front of himself.
If he’s going to live up to that contract he needs to catch that first shot cleanly.
5) Tavares - Again a puck battle between Dube and Tavares ends up with a scrambled shot for Tavares but honestly Markstrom shouldn’t be getting beat that clean from there. Even if the puck goes in you’d hope that Markstrom gets a piece of it, but again he’s slow to see the play develop.
Tavares goal is similar to the McDavid game winner the other night. Not a soft goal but a big save would be nice under the circumstances since it’s a saveable shot.
Like I said he’s not letting in soft goals but you’d want him to save at least one and preferably two of these goals tonight. You’re okay if he lets in three of these goals but he can’t let in all 5 of them. Especially the last three goals - based on the timing he really needs to make at least one of those saves for you.
And once again nothing here that screams “Flames give up higher quality high danger chances against than other teams do”, they just aren’t getting big saves.
