This may be an okay draft for some later picks as you may be able to find some later gems who didn't get to show themselves due to the current situation. The other factor is if the team getting a Giordano or Gaudreau has some bad injury luck, than the pick might move from 22-23 if traded for this years pick up to 15 or 16 type of thing, and even if it's lottery protected, and they miss the playoffs maybe even a top 12 type of thing.
Of course, you have to be willing to make a trade where the draft pick is the better value asset coming back. The Flames are more likely to trade Giordano for another Chris Butler or Cale Hulse, and with Gaudreau, probably take back a lesser 5 million dollar guy with 50 point upside, but to help them be mediocre for 3 more years.

Fair point on Johnny and this draft year (we use our spot to protect him then trade him post 21 draft). Leaves a narrow window for a trade though before NTC kicks in.

Too much concern about expansion draft.
Teams will know well in advance who Seattle may be looking at and have constant communication, and, work out a few deals in advance for them to take a certain player or not take a certain player. It also of course all depends on the other teams and the same offers and players that they are offering and making to Seattle. For the Flames, just like Engelland and Vegas.
It's not some shrouded mystery, and the Flames have no idea who Seattle picks until they do.
Seattle's choices and and every team's outlook for next year and beyond and the players they want or don't want will so change between the hour after trade deadline and before the expansion draft.

They should voluntarily expose everyone in the expansion draft, except maybe Tanev, Mangiapane and Markstrom.

I did drink an 8 pack so I'm not to upset about this loss today although I thought it was an alright game.
I have to say about Matthew Tkachuk, when he's noticeable in a game he's really good.
Why not tell Tkachuk that the team needs him to be the star and leader and give him the captaincy for the remainder of the year. Talk to Gio about it and give it a try, maybe they could share it instead of Gio giving it up.
I'm not on the inside but is it still a coaching issue? The team seems to play better with more consistency under Darryl but the results are just not there.
Was it a mistake to let Geoff Ward go before the end of the season?

This team reminds me of the 1992 team, 3 years removed from an incredible season. Good on paper but always losing games to the point they would eventually miss the playoffs. They missed the playoffs with players like Gilmour, Fleury, Roberts, MacIness, Nieuwendyk, just a head shaker.

I don't think so. The question about how certain players would perform under a good coach are answered now. The mistake was deciding to extend Ward rather than talk to Sutter in the offseason.
Sutter is stuck trying to make the best out of a bad situation in a shortened season that was already half done. Things wouldn't have got any better had Ward stayed.

The Gilmour trade wrecked the team on and off the ice. A PPG centre at the time, traded for a winger, leaving Newy and Reichel down the middle. Losing Macoun was not a good move either. And Newy had an injury filled, off year, compared to his career.

Well look at the coaching staff. Risebrough and scrubs like Charron and Baxter.

When Sutter came in he was saying this team wasn't good enough offensively to keep up with the other teams. The good news is they have cleaned up their defensive game. The bad news is they took it too much to heart that they aren't all that good offensively and seemed to have lost all confidence.

Well I was pretty much checked out and then Sutter was hired. I had legitimate hope he could bring this team back to the team that topped the West just a few seasons ago. Obviously some personnel changes needed. It's sad. I did like this group and thought it had a real shot.
I think the type of coach Darryl is was added too late. They needed him when Peters was fired (or even hired).

No. He had two goals that game.
He and Gaudreau are 7 points apiece in March. 4 points apart in total (23-27).

Spoiled entitled players who dictate when they will make an effort! Needed him when some guys were still young and could learn the right way under a proper coach. GG spent a lot of time experimenting with idea's instead of instilling a winning culture.
With the exception of Peters, We wasted a lot of time with underwhelming coaches.

Wasted time, formative years for promising players, and wasted favourable contract years.
