Lemelin's biggest problem was that he could not beat the Oilers. But no else on the Flames could until we got Vernon.

Rock hard thighs. Piping hot thighs. Great arms. Great abs. A stocky chest. Love the progress his body has made throughout his youth and now as a willing eager adult |

I have a similar view of Vernon but he was super clutch in that game 7. As they say, he got the job done. And I will be eternally grateful to Smyl for shooting it into his glove hand on the breakaway.

He was one of the best goalie prospects to come along in a long time, and the right choice at that spot at the time.

Didn't work out. And frankly I don't know why. But as a prospect - picking him at that spot was well justified.
 |
I don't know if someone can corroborate this, but I remember reading a story about Kidd, and he dealt with some severe anxiety issues through his career. It went on to explain that he designed really elaborate pre game rituals to try to deal with it. But it explains why when things went down hill for him it always picked up speed.

As much as we talk about the Brodeur vs Kidd thing and god knows its valid. Picking goalies is even more of a crap shoot in an 18 year old's draft. Kidd had a really good resume and looked like a solid pick. But I doubt in this day and age of psychological profiles, probably meetings with psychologists and reall in depth interviews that he would have been drafted as high today.

Missed the game watching UFC, just saw highlights. Glad they didn’t wilt after giving up two goal lead. Two really fortunate bounces to make it 4-2, I’ll take it.
Did anybody get after Pee-on for his gaudreau hit from last game? Saw mention in the game thread of chucky after him at one point.

Everyone remembers the Smyl save though. I'm not taking 1989 away from him. But for my money, Kipper 2004 was better than Vernon 1989. And (Vernon and the Flames) post 1989 underachieved badly.

Part of it is colored by off ice Vernon as well.

Great 4th liner, I just don't think he's a fit on the top line. I'm happy with how he's played recently. He always looks like he's working hard.

Had the Flames not traded up, would have been very interesting to see how it played out.

But yeah, actually drafting Kidd was never a questionable move.
 |
What bugs me is that NJ drafted a goalie and Calgary drafted a goalie. And yet NJ traded down and used the Flames original pick to draft Brodeur, while the Flames traded up to NJ original pick to draft Kidd. Lou knew something the Flames didn’t.

Kidd and Potvin were ranked ahead of Brodeur

Lou might have known something nobody else did not just the Flames...or more likely he just fluked out. Brodeur was the 2nd last pick in the first round and with hindsight should have gone 2nd overall.

Yes, it was quite known that Kidd was extremely superstitious and peculiar, his pre game rituals (as you had mentioned) were quite odd. It wasn't until towards the end of the career that he managed to get some semblance of normality.
