Just watched Sutter’s comments about Mike Stone and the experience he brings — I think Sutter understands the long game and what it takes to develop players. I also think benching both Dube and Valimaki on a losing streak is smart because you don’t want them “losing” too much and either losing confidence or worse yet, getting used to it.

I was thinking yesterday — Stone taking Valimaki’s spot in the lineup for some games might be the best thing for Juuso. Not sure about getting Kylington back in though.

Reggie Lemelin was not trash. Did you ever see him play?

Are you saying the backup goalie on Team Canada in the 1984 Canada Cup and the Williams Jennings Trophy winner is not trash? I think folks who never saw Lemelin play would say something different.

Fingers crossed. He doesn't look confident to me back there.

If the shooter has time to set and pick high corner, glove or blocker doesn't matter, they will score every time as long as its on target.

Never seen anyone go down so quickly for no reason.

Perfect example last night on how to play it was when Gaudreau was coming down the left side on a 2 on 1, he chose to shoot high glove on Broissoit and it was labeled...but LB didn't flop to his knees and it hit him right in the shoulder and bounced to the corner..

If that had been DR...its a goal every single time. He is a very very average G.

Presumably Flames were intent on drafting a goalie and had they not traded up, he might still have been the pick.

And then Kidd later traded for Giguere.
Crazy to think about. Kidd was really good to start his career. And I remember when goalies were drafted high in the draft consistently. No way a Wolf goes in the 7th a couple decades ago.

Yeah, Kidd was a really nice guy too. I was a goaltender in minor hockey in the mid 90s and got to meet him a bunch of times.....made it sting even more when he turned out to be an eventual bust!

Kidd was an outstanding prospect pre draft and post draft:

During his draft year

- WHL and CHL goaltender of the year

- First time all-star

Post draft:

- Memorial cup
- 3 time member of Canada's WJC, winning gold twice
- Won silver at the olympics (back up though)

He was one of the best goalie prospects to come along in a long time, and the right choice at that spot at the time.

Didn't work out. And frankly I don't know why. But as a prospect - picking him at that spot was well justified.

The 2nd worst thing about not drafting Brodeur over Kidd was the Flames thinking Kidd could replace Vernon and trading him to Detroit.

We may have not won another cup with Vernon but we would have definitely won a round in the playoffs.

Think of Kidd playing like Brossoit last night but in a whole playoff series!....

Just my opinion but I thought Lemelin wasn’t a great goalie (I won’t use the word trash-my kids use that about everything). Calgary didn’t win anything until the were clear of Lemelin and into the Vernon years.

The Flames went to the semi finals with him and Riggin year 1.

Lemelin was good, but by no means elite. Mind you, my opinion of Vernon isn’t that high. He made a great save in game 7 against Vancouver and was solid throughout 89. But I still have nightmares of the the next year - the puck floating over him while lying on his back and his little arms trying to stop it. And of Gretzky slapping an outside shot past him in 88. Tikkanen doing the same in 91.

A great save in game 7! Try 10 great saves, most in OT. Most clutch performance in franchise history.

He was a highly rated prospect but even at that time, drafting a goalie high was unusual. The list of top 10 goalie picks in the history of the league is relatively short given the importance of the position and he was 11th.

Had the Flames not traded up, would have been very interesting to see how it played out.

But yeah, actually drafting Kidd was never a questionable move.
