I’ve always liked Mike Stone — thought he played well with Brodie when we got him from Arizona in 2017. Then Treliving overpaid for Hamonic in the offseason which bumped him to the bottom pair, and Brodie struggled as well because he never clicked with Hamonic.
I also think it wouldn’t be a bad thing for Valimaki to watch a few from above — he’s still got a ways to go in terms of development if he wants to eventually hit his ceiling.

Not a fan of Stone drawing in, at all. I dont know exactly what Kylingtons doing wrong to get stiffed on minutes.
I d9nt really care about the FWs any more, they all need to miss a game or two in the press box. All. Of. Them.

This might just be the longest four game losing streak I've ever experienced as a hockey fan.

Hasn't been the same since.
The Stone acquisition was never an issue, not sure why the focus on that.

Spent 2 picks and have to buy him out...
Actually I didn’t until you brought it up.... I was just commenting on the guy saying stone bust his ass which is not true. He hasn’t played.

I get that you don't like Treliving ... all good. Certainly not going to try and convince you otherwise.
I see a team that had a middling starter that was demoted to be a strong backup behind a goalie that was 5th in Vezina votes last year. That should be a top five tandem in net. They sit 22nd in save percentage.
On the blueline the Tanev pick up on paper should have been a boost on Hamonic, with Andersson filling in for Brodie. Instead we've had a solid second pair, with Hanifin emerging but the first pair going to hell, and Valimaki struggling more than I expected after a strong showing in the Liiga.
Up front the team had four clear cut top six forwards, two emerging young talents and Backlund who is still an upper six, middle six tweener. The bad Treliving bet with this group is Monahan and Gaudreau as they don't seem to be top line players any more.
The team has a shooting percentage in all situations of 8.66%, good for 24th whereas their expected goals for is 10th.
The team has a save percentage of .901 good for 22nd when they have an expected goals against rank of 13th.
I see under performance everywhere.

Right? He's potentially our worst forward skill wise, but the fact he plays with heart (and no one else does) he's become one of the best forwards this year, if not THE best

Stone with nesterov feels like a disaster.
Stone with kylington seems more intriguing.

Markstrom is playing about to his career save percentage. Tanev was an upgrade to Hamonic, Rasmus a downgrade from Brodie and with Gio’s decline, that pairing has stepped back in a huge way.
The off season moves in isolation were defensible if you are ok with the veteran UFA approach but not many at the time thought he was addressing what needed to be fixed.

The two picks were fine, they were a playoff bound team that needed an upgrade. He played in the team's top four for the rest of the season and into the playoffs.
The Habs just spent the exact same price on a rental in Staal.
It was the next contract when he was a UFA that bit them in the ass but a lot of that was the blood clot.

Yes, he played up to his price the first go round. The UFA contract I didn’t understand because Treliving had all the cards. Stone’s wife is from Calgary, they’d bought a house, etc. I think he could have been had a lot cheaper. More like the contract after the buyout.

Spot on. But the above, 2 top line forwards completely falling off the map when they should be peaking. This must be perplexing to the organization.
That said, I felt they needed to go when they ran Hartley out of town. That told me they didn’t want to do what it was going to take to win.

Sutter has been pretty honest about what he sees out there. Love hearing things about speed and checking. Two things, I think the team stopped doing after the first 4 games after Darryl took over.

I think the reality is he just ran out of money with the cap flat lining and with so much uncertainty around Covid and the season in general and the upcoming expansion draft I think the trade market became almost non existent.
I’m sure the hole in the forwards was obvious but I don’t think there were a lot of good options. Even with the roster as is, I’m not sure anyone could have predicted how poorly our top forwards would perform. Monahan, Gaudreau, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Backlund, have all underperformed and been inconsistent.
The biggest notable is Johnny and Monny playing like shadows of their former selves. That said, my eyes see Johnny playing some of his hardest hockey and best defense of his career just now. But the spark, drive, creativity and offense is still not at the level it was.

I totally disagree with this. The skills and talent are there. The problem is between the ears.

It's okay everyone! The Flames and Flyers have been trending very similarly; get blown out together, lose close games together.
Flames will give up the first goal, but win 2-1 after a strong performance. Michael Stone with the game winner.

Every team is looking for D depth heading into the PO. Playing Stone now makes sense if they are trying to get something for him at the TD. He has to show he can still play of course which this will allow....or not.
