Here is an article from some Rangers blog site . Speculates what the Rangers were offering
https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/ra...-to-beat-them/
Quote:
“The team with the best combination of the want and ability to do it is the Rangers, but is Buffalo going to be comfortable sending him there,” Friedman explained. “So part of the issue [for the Sabres] is going to be does anybody have the will to beat what the Rangers have to offer.”
Exactly what could that offer have been? I have it on good authority, especially since it did not include at the time the #1 overall pick or Kaapo Kakko what the package may have been. The “reasonable” offer probably looked something like Vitali Kravtsov, a roster player, a young prospect defenseman (Nils Lundkvist or Braden Schneider excluded), and a first round pick.
|
Quote:
“They are not sure if they are going to trade him or not,” Lavoie began. “If they trade him they want four pieces that are first round picks. Or players that are playing if not in the NHL or elsewhere like the NCAA – that were first round picks and are having success and not struggling.”

I agree but a lot of people really don’t like the Flames players like Monahan and Gaudreau. It’s odd

I think most of us like both players, but we’d be foolish to ignore how easily teams have been able to contain them after game 82.

I don’t think anyone hates them. They’re just not suited for the 1A role. 1A in my definition is carrying the team to be a scoring or set up threat almost anytime they get it. Like early years Gaudreau. There are high expectations from them because the team has no better option. Being sports fans sure, many pile on them, but it’s management who puts them in those roles too. In fairness, I think Gaudreau is first line talent on a cup team, with Monahan, second line (only because of lack of speed), and both their contracts are more than fair. Again, they won’t carry the team on their back. Good second options though. IMO of course.

Why is that odd? Have you watched those two this year? I know you have. It was rhetorical.
I'm in the cut bait camp on one if not both of those players.

Nothing. If you’re not convinced this core can get it done, tank for Bedard and rebuild.

The team had an over reliance on Gaudreau as puck carrier, coupled with poor structure and support, leading to an attack which was easily neutralized
Every time they are on the ice now, it is at best 4 NHLers on 5
I’m not in the ‘sell low’ camp

Gaudreau and Monahan have had four different head coaches in the playoffs. I’m reasonably sure they’ll hit #5 this season.
I think you can win with both players, but I don’t think you can win with either of them as your best ones. They’re too passive.
I’d think that if Scotty Bowman was coaching them.
Now, replace Eichel with Monahan and I think they’re proper contenders.

Huge leadership skills and was great in the room (kept it clean and tidy). Real team player who understood her role and took it on with great enthusiasm. The perfect clutch performer and role model for the younger players.

Eichel is a great player who has no game breaking skills. He is all around solid, but I don't think he is what this team needs. I wouldn't be backing up the brinks truck for him in any way and any package I would consider doing would almost guaranteed not be good enough for Buffalo to say yes. If we were to acquire him, I'd want to get rid of our smaller/softer players so we could hopefully play the Sutter size game.
Monahan/Gaudreau
Mangiapane
Lottery protected first this year, if not 2022 1st
For
Eichel

Not my mom, she was a one man woman, which is why she was so good defensively! Preached that you take the man, and always stay with your man, other wise you give up too many scoring opportunities.

That offer is not going to get it done, from a Buffalo perspective I don't think that is enough value....your basically offering Monahan and some spare parts

I think Eichel costs too much, both in $ and acquisition cost, especially since I believe his level of excitement at being here would be similar to Buffalo...
If we don't want to rebuild, and I am assuming the owners do not, our best hope lies in trying to land a couple of guys, like Lindholm, who are under-used or are under-performing in their current situation. I am not knowledgeable enough about NHL roster to tell you who those guys might be... thoughts?

This team’s not in a position to build and use draft picks as trade capital. It’s a misuse of assets and ignorance of where we are as a franchise. The window for this core closed about a year ago.
If anything, I’d look at adding a veteran right winger on an expiring deal to play on the top line and let the rebuilding of the core happen in the offseason.
This offseason is where things will begin IMO. Too much overhaul needed at the moment to look for a quick fix saviour situation with someone like Eichel

Monahan+Lindholm for Eichel+Thompson. The cap hits balance out almost exactly.
Lindy's a very good player on a friendly contract, and is likely very appealing to Buffalo.
Maybe you'd have to sweeten the pot by adding a 2nd round pick or something. Bumping it up to a 1st might be pushing it though.

Andersson is already a solid 2nd pairing d-man with all-around abilities, and has potential to grow into a top pairing role. Not to mention he's locked into a long-term deal that is more than reasonable for what he does.
He's hardly a "spare part", and those are the types of players that are tough to part with which would make a deal like this work. Monahan still scores plenty of goals and can off-set the loss of Eichel at the center position. Add in a 1st round pick for any perceived disparity in value. No issues with cap management for either team as you have about $10 million going both ways.
I put a lot of thought into that proposal. Not sure I got much real thought from your response. Suggest something better that would actually be a reasonable and feasible deal.
