He’s on 960 as an NHL insider, not as a Flames insider. McDavid’s season is historic and relevant to this market, especially given the divisional race and the last game against the Flames.

With Jagr's knack for deadpan comments it makes too much sense.

McDavid is good for business. On a whole bunch of fronts and in a whole lot of places.
Its completely and understandingly annoying for rival teams fans, but it makes sense for the league and its broadcast associates.
Just makes it better when your team beats them.

For the bolded and because the NHL has a bigger audience now than it did in the 80s, it is unprecedented... either way, that isn't my point.

LOL, I'd rather have McJesus and Drai on the Flames than on any other team, especially the Oilers, right now! Just remember, the Flames could've had McJesus and Drai on draft day if the team knew how to tank properly! Now, we have to live with the consequences and hear how good they are continually! If it was the other way around, you'd be gloating as a Flames fan.

He worked it pretty well, too.
It was after the first game of the 2017–18 season that Jagr made his comments about McDavid. The Flames had been beaten 3-0 by the Oilers with McDavid scoring all of the goals. There was a lively, national conversation taking place after that game in which people were openly wondering if McDavid could break Gretzky's goal-scoring record that year. Jagr had yet to play a game in Calgary yet, but when he was asked about McDavid, he replied by saying that he would probably score 150 goals. He sounded completely sincere about it, but it was obviously sarcastic. He then followed up in the same interview with his famous, "some players skate really fast to the wrong spots," quip, which I understood as another dig at all the ridiculous attention McDavid was getting for his hat-trick.
After that, McDavid scored only two goals in his next twelve games, and the Oilers stumbled to a 4-7-1 record to start the season.
Jaromir Jagr knew exactly what he was doing.

Even then I don’t think he was the unanimous best player in the league. Guys like Sakic, Forsberg, Thornton, St.Louis, Naslund, Sundin, Jagr, all have similar or better point totals in that time, won individual awards, or won cups.
That was the period where the NHL didn’t really have a generational talent playing that was the face of the league. Gretzky had retired in 1999. Lemieux was around but not consistently playing. Crosby hadn’t started until 2006.
Honestly if I had to pick the guys that were the face of the league in that time it was Sakic and Yzerman as the faces of the epic battles Colorado and Detroit had in that era.
|
C'mon, Iggy topped them all except for Super Mario and Mullet Jagr in his period of time. Think about it, it took the French guys to steal the MVP from him when he received the Pearson Award that year for best player in the league as voted by all his peers in the NHL! You even heard the on-ice comment after Trevor Linden played his last game as a Canucks. You can't deny the legendary status of Iggy in the league. If he was elsewhere other than as a Flames on a way better team, I think his status would be even grander. There's also some on this board and previous Flames boards who wanted Iggy traded before his prime and during his prime years. Totally ridiculous!

Good at tanking lol...they sucked and won lotteries. Guy who wins 649 a good financial planner?

Really though that lottery was probably the fairest one ever held by the NHL IMO.
4 teams including the Pens AND the Rangers had the highest chance of winning...and thats what happened....one of them did.

Can't stand that loser organization....they purposely tanked to get Lemieux and Crosby...hope their rebuild is a long and painful one

Well that isn’t close to accurate (Crosby). First of all, they toiled around the bottom of the league for 3 seasons prior, being involved in multiple lotteries. And the Crosby lottery had every team in the league involved and the penguins only had a 6% chance.

I couldn't care less who Friedman fawns over.
Hopefully Sutter uses all of this to get an underdog mentality and hatred for their rivals into this team. This stuff needs to fuel the fire, it's actually good that its happening.
|
Yeah honestly they can fawn over him all they want because until our team stops making him look like a player in God mode whenever we play them the media will keep praising him, and to be fair there is no reason not to praise him when the guy can pretty much dismantle our team and the flames players don't change anything from game to game about how to contain him

The sooner people accept that McDavid is the best player we have seen in a long long time the easier their lives will be.

How will this make anyone's life easier? I am perfectly content and completely unaffected by my own refusal to accept this assertion.

I was really annoyed during the last game with the McD speed stats. That's been done to death. We get it, he's fast. He's a great player but has anyone really knocked him on his butt or caught him with a really hard hit?

Absolutely. I’m amazed when my kids talk about all their classmates and teachers who are Oilers fans, wear Oilers gear, etc. That never happened in Calgary in the 80s. I only saw one kid in my six years of jr high and high school wear Oilers gear or openly support them, and she was a girl so she felt safe she wouldn’t get beat up. If you were a fan of a rival team in enemy territory you kept quiet about it.
