I'm guessing they would say that the head contact was unavoidable under Rule 48.1 - same as what helped Dube avoid suspension after his hit on Kotkaniemi earlier in the season. But I suppose we'll never know.

Some differences between the plays in my opinion;
- Kotkaniemi had possession of the puck
- Kotkaniemi was reversing path to avoid a Flames forechecker
- Kylington did not have possession of the puck
- Kylington was in a battle with another Oiler to gain possession
- Kylington could not defend himself as his attention was on another Oiler and he was engaged in a stand still battle on the boards
Now i'm not saying the Dube hit was clear cut clean in respect to hitting a defenceless player, if anything you may be able to penalize him for that if you don't want to hold Kotkaniemi responsible for putting himself in a terrible situation, but Kylington was actively engaged with another player and didn't have the puck. Its not the same thing in my opinion, but it was pretty clear that it was both interference and contact to the head.
This play is almost identical to the Wilson hit IMO, Wilson got 7 games. Although I don't think its right, I think the NHL probably ruled no suspension because Khaira got obliterated in a fight and is probably out for awhile, plus Kylington returned to the game.

Three more years left at $3.2 million a season. That contract is arguably Matthew Tkachuk's greatest achievement in the NHL

That’s absolutely absurd that he’s not getting anything. That was as blatant a headshot as I’ve seen.
The NHL will continue to pretend that it cares about head contact but we all know the drill.

Had a feeling the league would do nothing after Ritchie KO'd him.

The problem is that the league could have given him a 1 game suspension, sent a strong message and he would likely miss that game anyways. How are the players supposed to have any idea what is allowed.
Also, I am way more concerned about Khara fighting than kassian. Ritchie bought himself a ton of respect and room last night. Plus Lucic. I think they make it known that if he acts up we will receive a spanking.

I hope jujar is ok but such a double standard from the Oil. Imagine if Tkachuk had done that to Barrie or something. He would be expected by the fans to fight the whole team one by one to "answer the bell" and the media coverage would force the NHL to issue a healthy suspension. The hit was garbage... Pure and simple.

The hit is whats dirty in the NHL now. I think Ritchie handled it better than a suspension would though. I also believe fighting should be in the game.

I am worried about Kassian in tomorrow night's game. I am always worried about Kassian on the ice. Not because he is some tough guy - he is tough, but a spot-picker who doesn't seem capable of fighting in his own class - Brett Ritche's younger brother Nick Ritchie I thought had him for lunch before.
I worry about Kassian because he is a head hunter with his hits. I am sure he will try and make a 'statement game', and I can see him trying to take runs tomorrow night. That's fine - I have no issue with guys like Ferland doing that. Kassian isn't a clean hitter, and that's what I have a problem with. He is reckless. I am always worried about the reckless guys on the opposing teams. I don't expect 'fireworks'. Even Kassian knows that Khaira screwed up and had to answer the bell, and now it is 'over'. I do think he will, however, try to make a statement tomorrow night.
As an aside, I wonder when Simon, Rinaldo and Robinson get a turn. I think all 3 are players that Sutter likes - Simon has been useless, but he is actually good at chipping and chasing and being a puck-hound.
Robinson in particular is a guy I am eager to see under Sutter, as I think he is the type of player that Sutter falls in love with. Fast, physical, big, works hard, and has surprising hands at times. Don't know who you pull out (even when Nordstrom is healthy again). Wouldn't surprise me if Sutter has Rinaldo or Robinson in for tomorrow actually, and then back out of the lineup for the Leafs' game.

Sutter is old school that way. If Kassian comes out and starts running around, Sutter will tap Luccic or BR on the shoulder and give then the nod, and that will be the end of Kassian.
As much as Oiler fans hype him, he's a mediocre phony tough gut.
If he head hunts, Sutter will tap Lucic on the shoulder and say the word McDavid or Draisaitl.
The Oilers don't want to play that game.
The Flames have a far tougher lineup with a lot more natural meanness to it.

I would love to see Lucic say “but Darryl, those are my buddies, I used to play with them!”

I remember the Nashville game well to this day. That's definitely Darryl, and I won't expect any different.
My worry isn't that. My worry is that before anything gets addressed, the idiot has done something in which he got 5 (match penalty, not fighting major) and a game, and the Flames have someone out with an injury to to some ugly hit. That's about where it both starts and ends for me when it comes to being worried about Kassian.

We have last change, every time Kassian hits the ice, either Lucic or BR steps on the ice and skates with him, whispering sweet nothings about death and pain in his ear.

I like it, but let them take turns. BR talks pain, Lucic talks death.

Technically they would be paying Lucic to beat up Kassian. How great would that be!?

Isn't Kassian just coming back from an injury from a fight. I doubt he can or wants to fight. He is just going to float around and thank Tkachuk for his contract when he skates by the Flames bench.

It's not like Edmonton will be looking for retribution. It wasn't a Flame that elbowed their player. And Kassian is a spot picker, unlikely he'd go with Ritchie or Lucic.
As for Sutter, the incident has been dealt with. No need for him to go all "Nashville".

Kassian is just coming off injury, and getting paid $3.2 a year to score goals. He’s not taking a fight with some bubble player who might end his (HOF?) career!
Geeeeez.

I would welcome Kassian being distracted and looking to make a statement. That would only help the Flames.
The only way the Oilers win tonight is if they can do it on the PP
