Every indication is that Buffalo is going to have to hit the reset button on their rebuild and start over. It's going to get worse before it gets better there. Can the Flames pry Rienhart out without having to give up much off of the current roster? Could a mix of pics, prospects (not named Zary or Pelettier), and Kylington be enough? Perhaps I am squinting a bit here, but I wonder if the Flames are showcasing Kylington at the moment. Would a 1st, Kylington, and prospect be enough/too much?
It seems to me, and I don't think I am alone, but the biggest need is a RS top 6 forward for the team. With the quarantine rules being what they are, I doubt the Flames will want to give up active roster players. By building a package around futures, which should be of interest the Sabres, the Flames might be able to add Reinhard without having to sacrifice from the current roster.
For further context, I firmly believe based on recent public comments made by Sutter that he came back to win a cup, and with he and Treliving having two years left after this one, that the Flames could start to leverage picks and prospects here in short order.

It's not possible.
The Flames have less than $1M available under the cap right now. So they would have to send more than $4M back the other way. Who would that be?
Even if they wait until the deadline, they would have to send more than $3M back. And then Reinhart would have to quarantine for 2 weeks, leaving only a handful of games left.
Even if the cap could work, would you seriously give up Kylington, a prospect and a 1st for 10-20 games of Reinhart?

Keep Bennett, let him have another awesome playoffs under Sutter, which makes Seattle select him while we keep Kylington.

I think it would make more sense in the off-season. He is an RFA so you would have some control over the situation.

I would consider Bennett + 2nd in the off-season.
The problem with that though, is that you would have to protect Reinhart, leaving Backlund exposed.
Right now, the cost of acquiring a player (anything other than a pure rental) includes the cost of losing more in the expansion draft than we otherwise would have.
It is a big factor that will really inhibit deadline trades - along with covid protocols for Cdn teams.

That won't work. I can't see Bennett getting qualified. Too much money for too little production. Buffalo can wait until the off season and get him for nothing.

I'm no capologist, but aren't the Flames saving quite a bit of dough by having waived Ryan, and others, over the course of the season?
For the sake of balancing cap considerations of the trade, I wonder if including a roster player (one of the three depth adds this past offseason; Lievo, Simon, Nordstrom) moves the needle much. Kylington + Simon (lets say), a 1st, and a prospect? I don't know, maybe it doesn't make sense. With some creativity, I just wonder if it can be done.
Renhart is also an RFA at years end. The intent would be to resign him. I would definitely give up Kylington for him. Kylington is behind Gio, Hanafin, Valamaki, and arguably Mackey. At the moment the Flames need a RS top 6 forward much more than a LS D.

As weird as this year's draft may be, I don't think CGY should trade a 1st (or if they did, top 10 protected for several years).
I wonder if OTT or VAN might serve as broker for some trades to CAD teams? Requires good relationships with other GMs, and I'm not sure Benning or Dorion are smart enough or have them.
eg.
April 1: Sam Reinhart to OTT for Dzingel + 2nd + 3rd + Prospect(s)
April 12: Reinhart to CGY; 1st+Kylington+Ryan+prospect(s) to OTT (with enough time to flip Ryan I suppose)
It's probably too complicated, and I don't think those values are right. I think it would work better with a true contender, a bubble team, and a rebuilding team.

Bennett's value will be near zero in the off-season. Instead of paying assets, a rebuilding team can just offer him a 2x2 or something. They could even jump the gun with an offer-sheet at 1 or 2 x 1.439 and not need to give any compensation.

Jimmy Vesey is on the waiver wire today. 1 year, $900K contract. Am I crazy, or should the Flames take a flyer and put in a claim?

Hes basically a warm body at this point that hasn't performed any better than our other bottom 6. Playing a position we are loaded at already. I dont see a need at this point. Better off bringing up Gawdin or somebody from the farm.

I thought he was a natural RW, which seems like the biggest hole at the moment. Given the current group, he’d have a better chance of clicking with 13/23 than the vast majority of the other options. Although Ritchie hasn’t looked terrible in that spot.

Benny has 2 points in 3 games this season. That’s not bad production!

Big NO to Vessey. In the games vs the Leafs, he was the worst player on the ice. I couldn't believe it given all the hype when he came out from college. He sucks. Think last season's Jankowski.

With the Leafs willing to trade a top prospect, I’d deal Giorando and a third for Robertson. The guy should easily be a second line player in short order.

Also right now Sam Reinhart is a far more productive player than Bennett - such that a 2nd doesn't make up for that gap at all.

If the Flames didn’t take a flyer on Corey Perry, the. no way they take one on Jimmy Vesey.
Still can’t believe Treliving didn’t pick up Flame killer Corey Perry. He’d be one of the top bottom 6 players on the team right now and his presence on the man advantage would be of great help to our anemic powerplay right now.

Mike Commodore is have a blast mocking the Buffalo Sabers today. Using each players plus/minus as a scorecard for the Master golf tournament. It's pretty funny and alarming at how bad they are. Kruger is not the answer there.
Dealing is a raucous-27 and leading the masters by 7 shots over currently being discussed Sam Reinhart

I have a sneaking suspicion Perry if dealt, will be acquired by the Oilers. Seems fitting given how much all parties involved dislike the Flames.
