My point doesn't require them having low icetime in the final four minutes. The comment by Sutter is what I'm talking about. And the comment isn't just for Monahan's line.
Do you have a different take on his comment?
Yeah he is obviously not talking about the two guys that got more ice time than any other forward in the final four minutes of a one goal game.
I think some of you need to go watch the final four minutes of the game...Gaudreau's line has a dominant shift that leads to a penalty, then they are on the PP. Leivo and the boys get out there for the last 30 seconds after the PP. Again, unless they are playing 3 mins straight they couldn't possibly be put out there more.
Its Lindholm's line or mind games...last even strength shift of the game is Gaudreau's line dominating in the Montreal zone.
NHL (mario lemieux's number) go check it out

The thing with Monahan's line is I actually thought they were pretty good, played the system, didn't give up much, just couldn't generate anything.
The shift at the end sealed it though and JG was the driver there. That's the closeout ability that we've been moaning after for years here! They have room to get better, and the need to, but I'm ok with what I saw tonight.
I thought they played well too. Honestly, I think the coaches are probably really happy with the effort from Gaudreau-Monahan-Ritchie. Although I also think they became less effective as the game went on though and part of that is this style going to take some time to get used to for them.
Oilyaz clearly glued to our game with all those fine details. Peeved about our enthusiasm:

God, I missed these cryptic Darryl quotes that completely distract from the original question. The man is a master of smoke and mirrors when it comes to dealing with the media.
I also missed his thinly veiled power moves in his dealings with with Eric Francis. For all I know his mother's birthday may well be March 10th and he was messing with Francis the whole time. Either way, I'm glad someone in this organization is finally willing to publically show him the same level of casual contempt I share for his brand of journalism.

Lindholm's line played well in the third too, though. The whole team played well throughout the game. That's why I think he is using the media to apply a form of pressure.

I think a lot of people miss where and what Sutter looks at for effort. Fans notice hard work in the offensive zone. I think Sutter looks harder at the defensive zone and the backcheck.
Also Sutter may simply be saying there was a line he couldn’t use in the last minute because they had just been out on the previous shift.
I think Johnny will find success with Sutter, largely because Johnny is smart, understands and sees the game well, and he can learn. Sutter is also smart, understands players well, and will see how to maximize what Johnny had to offer. I do think there could be struggles on the road to having Johnny playing his best under Sutter, but I'm sure he can get there.

I watched their game against Edmonton on Saturday after our game. Calgary looked very motivated. Lucic was running everybody. Calgary is very physical and I don't want Edmondson getting hurt in a fight with Lucic.

Hmm I dunno. I thought he started the year well but lately has gotten a bit soft.
When sutter is saying people need to finish checks he’s talking about the Monahan Gaudreau line who have gone years thinking they’re above it. Guess what? They aren’t. I get your smaller and maybe a little intimidated but get it together, get some courage and do it. Monahan especially, and he also started the year with that chip on his shoulder but has softened. It isn’t acceptable and won’t fly with Sutter which is good because in turn it’ll generate turnovers and from that- offence and confidence and scoring.
There was a play on the PP when Gaudreau lost the puck and the Habs player got to it right before Johnny did, Johnny just waived at it with one hand on his stick and the Habs cleared it down the ice. THAT can't happen, he has to get right in there and battle. There were a few instances of that with Johnny.
He doesn't need to throw his weight around, but he needs to engage and battle for loose pucks. He did that when he was a rookie, he battled hard for pucks, he hasn't been doing that at all in recent years.

I remember when Bennett was scratched a while back and found out he wasn’t even practicing with the team, and Ward didn’t say a word to him. There were some comments here suggesting it wasn’t a head coach’s job to go around having conversations with players and that Ward was probably “too busy” to deal with stuff like that.
So far, we’re heard a ton about Sutter actually talking to his guys. Not just “a conversation,” but multiple conversations. Setting clear expectations, being active on the bench, discussing things as a group and with individuals. Bennett has talked about this a couple times, and guys like Tkachuk, Lucic.
The Flames played one of their best effort games all season. The score could’ve been better, some players still struggled a bit, but the pace was there. And the guys who struggled or looked like lesser versions of themselves (Bennett, Leivo, Ryan, Backlund, etc) suddenly looked like they knew their role, knew the expectation, and were 100% focused. Who knows, maybe Ward thought talking to bottom six guys was beneath him, or that having conversations wasn’t his job. But Sutter obviously doesn’t. If the bottom six can play this way even 50% of the remaining games, that’s going to be a huge improvement.
I dunno, just looks like Ward wasn’t much of a measure of how a good coach should act. I’m sure he’s a great guy, but I prefer having a great coach, especially one that isn’t above talking to his players. So happy Sutter is back.

Night and day... Sutter has instant results. Some players in the team will instantly flourish under Sutter hockey, others will take time.
Somewhat unrelated: Watching a guy like Perry doing his schtick for years I always wonder what loved ones or close buddies of a player like that think when they watch his theatrics. Case in point his near somersault after a little bennet shove tonight. I think of the Ryan Johansen comments on Kesler a few years back. How does one cheer for a guy who makes his living being as much a dirty cheater as possible? Do you go ‘oh man, he really sold that one, well done’... Or do you just cringe... yes I am a biased flames fan who has seen Perry perform Oscar worthy dives (2015 playoffs anyone vs stajan?) only to score on us.
I'm guessing Sutter got much of these early results just by showing up.
Everyone knows what it's like going to work when you feel like things are going nowhere, it's deflating nd makes it a lot harder to to stay fully focused and motivated, especially if you see some guys kind of slacking off without repercussions. That was what things started to look like under Ward, people doing what they need instead of what they can.
Sutter brings a belief that this team might not be doomed to mediocrity, and that alone will put some extra focus in a lot of players.
Overall a really good game by the Flames. Still some real stinker performances out there. The guys that stood out in my viewing as being quite poor were 1) Tkachuk 2) Gaudreau 3) Nesterov.
Tkachuk was the worst player on the ice by a good margin. Did nothing out there and didn't look like his GAF meter was very high. This may not be the coach or team for him. Sutter plays an up tempo pressure game all the time, and Tkachuk has been a guy to disappear under pressure. He's been all talk, so its time for him to back up his yappin' with some top end play where the team needs it. Last night was not a good start and I believe Sutter's reference to the line he couldn't put out there was Tkachuk's.
Gaudreau made a few nice plays but was MIA for most of the night. Monahan and Ritchie bought into the north south game and were engaging in contact, but Gaudreau was still blowing snow at every opportunity and peeling away from getting engaged. He doesn't look comfortable out there and hasn't for quite some time. No where near as bad as Tkachuk, but not a great start for Johnny Hockey.
Nesterov was the weak link on the blueline. The problem with his game is he just holds the puck waaaaay too long. He's gotta move the puck quicker. The only times the Habs got sustained pressure, and their goal, was then Nesterov was out there. He just doesn't react quickly once he gets the puck and he makes weak plays with the puck.
For a Flames team that has been dog #### most of the season, and it was difficult to single out three guys for quality play, the fact there were only three guys that stood out for mediocre to poor play is a fantastic change. Take this one and build on it Saturday night. Two wins in a row would be the beginning of a streak they badly need.
