lol I think Sutter is trolling y'all
He says "there was a line I couldn't put out there".
Doesn't have to mean a line was playing badly, could just mean there was a line that was tired and couldn't be put out there.

Gaudreau and Monahan played more than any other forwards in the final 4 minutes
this isn't the controversy you are looking for

9 forwards are wondering if it was them
And he’s probably telling all 9 if they aren’t sure, they have work to do.

I suspect that Sutter was being purposively vague and not for the sake of sparing anyone's feelings. I think he's testing the players to see what they respond to. For example, he was tapping Monahan's backside at practice and now he's giving it a kick. Don't think it matters if he actually meant either Monahan's or Lindholm's line, reality is that Ryan's line won the spot tonight and if they want that ice time they need to earn it by outplaying their teammates.

Monahan played almost two of the final four minutes...the were on the PP. Ryan's line got 30 seconds after the PP

The powerplay is a pretty significant factor there, no?
Maybe you disagree, but I don't think Sutter is trolling the media for no purpose. I'd be stunned if that were the case.

Nothing to add, except the Ryan setup was a ####ing beauty.

It's impossible to love Sutter any more than I do.
He is 10000% referring to Gaudreau-Monahan-Ritchie, who were by far the worst line tonight.
Sutter doesn't care who you are. You play the right way or you don't play at all.
Johnny and Mony are going to improve so much under Sutter. That, or they're going to be saying their goodbyes this summer.
|
In other words Sutter couldn't put his best line out there because they were not his best line! He has to put his best line out at the end of the game if they want to win. Just imagine what that does for the confidence of those on the forth line and the wake up call it provides the first line!

Kudos to Bennet on that too. He had a lane that DIY Sam usually takes and stuffs a puck to little effect. He made a play. Loved it.

Maybe it’s just me, but I took Sutter’s comment as the other line was too tired to play. Nothing to do with performance.

Their line was on for a massive shift just before the PP, then on the PP, unless they are playing the final three minutes straight how could they possibly get more ice time.

How dare you accuse Sutter of telling the truth! No, clearly he must have said all that as a cheap psychological ploy to criticize his top players without mentioning names so they would all be afraid of the Sutter Gestapo.

Yeah, I distinctly remember Bennett aiming for a buzzer-beater open net goal that missed, yet that shift chart doesn't show him on the ice.
So I'm not sure this shift chart is correct.

The thing with Monahan's line is I actually thought they were pretty good, played the system, didn't give up much, just couldn't generate anything.
The shift at the end sealed it though and JG was the driver there. That's the closeout ability that we've been moaning after for years here! They have room to get better, and the need to, but I'm ok with what I saw tonight.

My point doesn't require them having low icetime in the final four minutes. The comment by Sutter is what I'm talking about. And the comment isn't just for Monahan's line.
Do you have a different take on his comment?
