Flames Roster: What Could Have Been
With several days off from having to sit through another Flames game (thank goodness), thought it'd be a fun exercise to see what the Flames could have been.
So I’m a pretty big fan of the Flames' amateur scouting staff and I've liked they’ve done over years despite the lack of draft picks. So let's pretend this is an alternate timeline where the Flames decided to keep all of their picks and continued to rebuild slowly through the draft. So build your roster of what you think the Flames could have looked like
Also, I am aware that the Flames’ record would be drastically different (good or bad) had they not made the trades in the first place so maybe the Flames are bad enough to pick an Auston Matthews or a Cale Makar or a Quinn Hughes, but for the sake of this exercise, just keep it simple and stick to where the Flames did end up drafting. Start where ever you'd like; personally i'm starting off after the Flames run in 2015.
No Dougie Hamilton

Because I believe this is what a scout would do for fun; to see what your roster could’ve been.
Beats talking about another failed coach or how much we suck because we can’t beat the lowly Sens.

Swap Greenway with Roope Hintz and I'd be an extremely happy camper.

Even ignoring the hindsight issues, the draft is self-correcting - if you make better decisions in year 1, you won't be drafting at the same spot in year 2.

If you're going that deep into hypotheticals, why not have Pastrnak on your roster instead of Bennett...

You don’t think the Oilers are weeping? They could’ve had Kyle Connor, Aho, Tkachuk just to name a few.

It is also worth pointing out that every single team has a list like this. No team will ever draft every player they were supposed to in hindsight. So, what is the point in pining about what could have been if it never would have been?

I didn’t go that far back. Plus, I didn’t remove any Flames‘ original picks (i.e. Bennett, Tkachuk, Valimaki. I only added players that the Flames could’ve picked had Treliving/Button had those picks I listed.

It’s not really hindsight, I’m saying the Flames wouldn’t have picked Bennett or Tkachuk. It’s more like, had the Flames not rushed the rebuild and traded for Hamonic, who would the Flames have drafted when their turn came up.

Except they would not have drafted all of these players.

I don’t think I’m being necessary unfair here. I’m not even saying the Flames would have been worse if they didn’t have Hamilton and Frolik (very likely) in the lineup in 15-16, so they could’ve drafted a Matthews or a Laine. I had them right where they were and still drafting Tkachuk.

This is just silly. You could probably make Tampa Bay better or St. Louis the year before, if you only considered "what could have been" with hindsight.
Now try it picking the worst players picked in and around those same spots.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Remove Valimaki. If we didn't have Brian Elliott in 16-17, we would have drafted later in 2017.

Without Brian Elliott the Flames probably would not have made the playoffs in 2017. They likely would have drafted earlier than #16.
