IF this is true, then BT should be released as well...he has lost his autonomy.
Makes him a lame duck GM and that never ever goes well.
If true, it would suggest BT is on ground that's a bit shaky, but in terms of what's good for the team I think it's almost ideal to have BT just focus on player acquisition and contract management. He has done a very good job with those. His one glaring weakness has been what he has done with coaching. With that issue now sorted, the Flames look much stronger overall and BT can focus on playing to his strengths. I don't see moving on from BT as making the Flames better now that the coaching situation has been sorted out.

It sounds like Sutter was considered in the offseason as well. I could imagine that ownership wanted Darryl and Treliving wanted Ward. Tree got his wish but I am sure the discussion would have been “if this fails then we bring in our guy”. Tree got half the season and the team was outside the playoffs looking in and the move happens.
This is what I think happened, and I don't believe it has to mean that Treliving is on his way out. The owners clearly love Darryl Sutter, but we know they also really like Treliving. I think they are hoping this works out for both of them together.

To do an apples and apples comparison one should count a loss as a loss in my opinion as there were no OT loss points for the caps or the panthers. With that caveat, the three franchise records were
Oilers - 18 games under .500 the year after their Cup appearance
Caps - 14 games under .500 the year after their Cup appearance
Panthers - 7 games above .500 above the year after their Cup appearance and made the playoffs losing in the first round.
The Oilers were terrible and one man, Chris Ponger, dragged them to the Finals. They were worse than the Caps and the Panthers.
In any event, all three were worse than the 04 Flames which was the claim. And the Caps and Panthers got swept in the finals - embarrassing.

Can't image Darryl has designs on the GM job. He's 62 years old and probably doesn't want to put in the time required. Did it once.. went back to coaching and had tremendous results.

I agree. I also think the owners value Darryl a lot, and he is going to coach all three years of this contract. Which means if things continue to go sour or if the two can't work together, BT is the one that is going. Whether that means he resigns, or they let him go.
But I think, generally, owners want both guys here.

Have to feel sorry for Ward as a person. Can't be easy when you're given the bad news. He gave it his best and best wasn't enough.
I wish him all the best in the future.
I am positive that he will at least catch on somewhere as an assistant or associate. His longevity in the league in those roles suggests he is good at a lot of things.
I agree 100% with you. Seems like a good guy and I have no pleasure seeing him fired.
Sutter is the only available veteran coach I wanted to see come in, but I was so sure that he was happily retired from coaching by his own decision. I didn't think it was possible he would come back.
Timbit touched on it quite a few pages back, but few coaches can balance that line between being a hard-ass and still being loved by by his players. He doesn't care about status or hierarchy on the team, everyone has to pull their weight. I think it's too common these days that coaches fall into the trap of letting the stars reign over the the team and I suspect that is part of the issue with this roster right now.
I also like that Sutter tries to protect his players from public and media criticism and isn't afraid to take the blame for them. He'll give them hell behind the scenes, but he'll be damned if he lets others walk all over them. It's hard to do these days, but it's important for the mental fortitude of the players.

One player I am hoping responds really well to Sutter is Monahan. Tkachuk feels like a Sutter player sominsuspect his season starts to move in the right direction as well.
I am hopeful that Lucic keeps up his solid play and maybe gets a lot meaner.
Yup. I am not at all concerned about Johnny. I am most intrigued about:
The Oilers returned with the same lineup sans Pronger and some bit pieces up front and missed the playoffs the next year. That lineup was complete trash and was dragged kicking and screaming to the Finals by Chris Pronger.
The Oilers had 4 guys score 20 goals that year, and five guys got 50+ points.
The Flames had ONE and it was Iggy.
The next highest guy was Donovan at 18. Nobody not named Iggy broke 50 points.
It was Iggy, Kipper, Regehr, and, respectfully, a bunch of nobodies.
The most accomplished players outside that Group were Gelinas and Yelle. Love em both, but I’d normally say if either of those guys are on or near your #1 PP unit, you’re more likely to pick 1st overall than win it all.
And Darryl still almost beat the 2004 Lightning. With that.
