There is no way Buffalo wants Monahan. Monahan + Tkachuk might be a starting point but in that scenario Monahan is the extra piece. I see no possible way Monahan gets us Eichel as the main piece.

I think the 2 1sts are the main piece. Monahan is a centre fill-in during the rebuild.

So Buffalo wants Monahan and a couple mid 1sts? How does that help them?

Sure, but Buffalo is a pretty serious hockey market. How on earth would they spin Monahan and two first round picks for, arguably, the best player in franchise history to the fan base?
If the Sabres trade Eichel, there is going to have to be a high value cost controlled asset coming back. The Flames don’t have that piece.

Let's not exaggerate Eichel's greatness. He doesn't touch Gilbert Perreault or Dominic Hasek. Pat Lafontaine had some huge years in Buffalo, far better than anything Eichel has done. The guy's best year had 82 points. He has never led his team into the playoffs. He is a very good player, and has the potential to get better, but this take that he is one of the top players in the NHL is not supported by his body of work.

Well, those guys didn't do these things when they were 24 to be fair.

Why is Eichel the hot trade topic lately? Did him or his agent or Buffalo say something?

Dominic Hasek says Hi. So do Pat lafontaine and Gilbert Perreault. Eichel hasn't done anything yet. He averages mid 60s in games played a season and has only been a plus player 1 time in 6 years and his average pts a year is 58.5. He's not that elite. He's actually pretty on par to Monahan in terms of stats except Monahan is usually a plus player.

IF there was a trade to be made between the 2 teams, I think you need to start with a top salaried player to make the money work. One of the top 6 forwards. Then you're going to have to add a top prospect or young roster player. That probably starts and ends with Valimaki. Then you're probably going to have to add a pick or more.
If the Sabres insist on Tkachuk, maybe you can get away with a Zary or Pelletier add. But if it's Monahan or maybe Lindholm, they're going to have to add Valimaki, there's no way around it. Plus a 1st and a second.
There's no way if you're going to trade a player like Eichel that you're going to take Monahan and a couple of middle first rounders. The conversation starts with names like Tkachuk or Valimaki. If those are non starters, then the Sabres find another team to deal with.
Mangiapane, Dube, Hanifin are all nice players, but they're not moving the needle in a deal for Eichel. The only way you'd include players like that is to make the salaries work.
Or maybe the Sabres go all Darryl Sutter and ask for all the 20 goal scorers plus Ian White.

Uh Gilbert Perreault had 96 points at 23 , 113pts at 24 and 98 points at 25 , 89 at 26, 86 at 27, and 106 at 27.
He holds all of the franchise skater records and won the Calder and a bingo 3 years later.

I was commenting on the post, not predicting Buffalo’s ask.
But if they are getting rid of Eichel it’s because he wants out, and they are starting over before his NMC kicks in and the return diminishes. It will essentially be an admission this rebuild failed. In that case, they are starting from scratch, though they still have to ice a team. Don’t forget they also lose Hall to FA, they have to figure out Reinhart. They are actually a pretty old team.
They have Cozens and Dahlin as a base to start with. They have Jack Quinn. Two firsts gets them two more decent players. Their own first will be a lottery pick. They have Thompson, Jokiharju and Middlestadt as young depth.

Except he is vastly superior to Monahan and doesn’t need a midget to pad his stats

When every team with a pulse would be thinking of ways to acquire Eichel, the return does not diminish.
Buffalo’s ask would start with an established young player with term.
Calgary does not have that player.

He’s widely considered to be one of the top 5 young centres in the league. He’s up there with McDavid, MacKinnon, Mathews, Draisatl. Perhaps it’s too early to say he’s arguably one of the best players in franchise history, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he’s going to be as impactful as LaFontaine, Mogilny, Housley, or even Perrault. I think that’s the trajectory he’s on, and I don’t think I’m alone.
The proposed trade was Eichel for Monahan and two firsts. I don’t think that is remotely close to what it is going to take.
For the sake of argument, should the Flames trade Tkachuk for a second line C and two, presumably, late first round picks?....yeah, right.

Stalock on waivers.
Gotta think Buffalo claims him, probably some interest elsewhere too.
