PP has been terrible this game but has been pretty good this season
Gaudreau is fumbling the puck tonight, not the coaches fault

Cocaine works too.
Anything to counteract the horse tranquilizer in their systems.

It's the kind of play you'd expect from a guy playing his first game in the NHL.
|
Yep. I’m not blaming him for the goal. Just pointing out that he was involved. He had a chance to clear the puck, but backed off because him and Johnny didn’t communicate.

That would require the flames to either a) move their feet for more than a push push glide or b) hit someone and not just do a fly by

I’m not a fan of this coaching staff but that one is all execution.

Exactly. It's all about hitting the blue line as a unit, they're just not timing it right tonight and 3-4 guys have to stop to not go offside

It's worked for Virtanen so far in his career.

The problem is the players generally treat it as the ONLY option. The other players needs to be more willing to carry the puck in themselves like the 2nd unit does.

The Canucks are playing a few feet higher than they did Thursday. That makes JG and others have to make the decision a split second earlier.
So yes execution, but the PP system has to adapt..getting it in deep as an example as the Canucks players are that much further away from their own corner.

That’s on him.

When the opposition sees Gio on the ice, they know the only option coming is a drop-pass to Johnny, so the 4 penalty killers have 10-15 seconds get into position and then crowd him out when the crosses the line.
If someone else is leading the breakout like Ras, he can pass to Johnny, but he also sometimes carries it in himself or passes off to Lindholm, so the penalty-killers have to prepare for points of entry.
Johnny can only do so much alone against 4 players, and the other PP forwards are typically stationary at the opposing blue line, so they won't have the speed to retrieve a dump-in if Johnny changes to that option.

The bump back is not about catching the opposition flat footed and blowing by. It’s about making them take a position so the carrier can spot the best entry and make a short pass just across the blue line to set up. Johnny isn’t doing that. He’s skating into the thick of the coverage.

Hmm.

He's leading the team in ice time for defenseman. I said cut his PP time and reduce his 5v5 time a little. Seems reasonable.

Maybe it’s just me but the Flames have looked like they expect the puck to travel quicker along the ice than it does. Like the ice is slow or something.

What’s the point of Johnny going on forecheck if he dumps it in 1v3
