Yeah his play lately is concerning. Almost hoping to hear that he’s battling through an injury.
I don’t disagree with your point. He very well may be highly overpaid on his next contract. I hope not, but he doesn’t have the skating ability of say a Backlund who post 30, can still fly around out there.
With that said, he still can be a very effective player once he hits that age if he continues to bring all his other intangibles along with him. He’s a player, who when he’s on and doing what he does, certainly helps your team.

What on earth are you talking about? Do you have a breakdown of the cliques/groups on the Flames and membership in said groups/cliques?

If I was him I would be accepting my 9 million dollar for one season qualifying offer and unless my agent can get a max term at around that number I go to free agency where I have 32 teams offering me deals and pick where I want to go.

The way he plays? No way, I’d be looking for term.

What about Clayton Keller in Arizona? Do you think they could be duped into moving him?
Forsberg in Nashville would probably be extremely expensive.
Rakkell with the least upside but would probably look nice...

Keller's contract is concerning. Seven more years after this one at $7.15 million for a guy who I'm not even sure is a top-3 offensive player on Arizona.
From my viewings, Dvorak, Garland, and Schmaltz are all much more impressive than Keller.

Hard pass on Keller. That contract is awful.

I would think he is more valuable to trade as an RFA then with a big contract. Big contracts are going to be very hard to move for the next few seasons, not many teams want to take on another teams (potential) mistake. And the sign and trade rarely happens anymore.

With Keller I'd be afraid to add another undersized winger to the team. He also makes more that Gaudreau but isn't as dynamic and doesn't score at nearly the rate Johnny does.
Forsberg I would be interested in, but I don't see a fit cap wise.

Keller's getting 7.15 per year?! wow... his agent fleeced Arizona.

His dad had a reputation of being hard to deal with in contracts. People jump to conclusions that Matthew will be the same way. Matthew didn't sign for long term like Monny or Johnny did so he must not want to stay here, right? ...even though it was a deal that could be made at the time to keep the team cap compliant and competitive for the next couple of seasons.

It will be hard to justify qualifying Tkachuk at $9 million in a few years. He's good, but he's not that good.
It seems like Treliving was banking on a ton of progression, and that hasn't happened.
To be fair, the contract was signed before the flat cap was implemented. But this is looking like it will be by far the worst of his major RFA signings. He might be worth the $9 million cap hit for a good chunk of his next contract. But his trade value will be far lower.

I don’t think there’s a team that would pay Tkachuk 9 million without major progression. Including the Flames.

Gotta wonder if the missing Chucky link is Backlund. Something to consider.
I wondered out loud a week or so ago if moving Lindholm to Center was a net benefit to the team or a detriment to the overall balance of the roster.
Putting Lindy back on the Monny line at RW might bring back some Chucky, Mangi, Backlund success. Give Bennett, Dube and Looch a revitalization and push the extra bits where they should be on line 4.
Don't get me wrong, Lindholm at center works just fine for him. I think his overall skill and worth as a player doesn't really lessen in any position he plays.
I just wonder if it's the best thing for other players.

This is a bit of the silver lining to bridge deals, the risk goes both ways for both sides. Would we be better off 2 yrs into a 6x9M deal? (Dubas really rekt the market)
The QO aspect is tough, but even if we end up in that scenario, he will remain a valuable trade asset who will be eligible for an extension

Tkachuk signed a contract that would ultimately result in him getting a huge payday at an early age.
While it’s short term helped the Flames cap situation short term, they will pay a heavy price for it, based on the required qualifying offer and his quickness to UFA.
He didn’t sign that contract as a favour to anyone but himself.
