I see no evidence Burke even likes Hartley. And why would he get rid of Sullivan anyway? Especially in favour of Hartley.

That would be fun, except they’d have to drag full sentences out of him. Burke is a lawyer so talking comes naturally. Sutter’s a farmer.

I'd love to see them snag Torts out of Columbus for the ultimate Team Surly front office...

Good for Burkie, but I'll miss him in the media. He's well informed, well spoken, and unlike so many of these other old school guys, not a Neanderthal. I thought his take on DeAngelo was spot on.

Huh. My memory of Burke's relationship with Hartley is quite different.

Well, he was a Cherry emplacement so nuance wasn’t really required.

At least the Pens aren't a team at the start of a rebuild who Burke will rush to mediocrity like he did with TOR and CGY.

It's definitely chips in the middle time. Will be interesting to see what they do.

All five teams are within 2 pts of each other for the final playoff spot in that division. TOR holds the Pens 1st for this year, so I hope they make the friggin finals.

Heh, this is as good a place as any to mention that Hornqvist has 5G 8P in 9 gp this year for FLA. Matheson's only played 3 games, but donuts and -2 in 17.5mins per.

6 more years at 4.875.

I think Burke is one of the best and will always respect his candour.

Many loved spewing crap that he was an outdated dinosaur but I've always found his takes to be fairly astute.

I think he will always have a soft spot for Calgary so it makes me like him even more.

Wish him all the best and I’m happy it’s out east so I don’t have to hate him by association like in the past.

I think Granteeed is right to what he is alluding to. Burke didn't know Hartley until Burke started working with him in Calgary. However, he would often talk about Hartley with the media about how great he was, and how he is old-school like Burke, and how he hates to lose.

One of the things that I remember Burke specifically saying was that if he asked Hartley to tank to get a better pick, that Hartley would probably beat him up - or something to that effect.

He seemed to genuinely have a high regard of Hartley.

Now, things might have changed and Burke soured on Hartley - who knows? Maybe what you have heard came afterwards.

I don't, however, feel that Hartley would be considered for Pittsburgh. Burke is the POHO anyway, not GM, so it will be Hextall's decision. Hartley will bring a bit of a shadow and a bit of an uneasy feeling when the NHL is trying to clean itself up. Hartley has never physically abused players (to my knowledge) like Peters has, but he has definitely been a bully from what many people hinted at. I don't think many teams will be too eager to take that chance.

What did you hear specifically? It really sounded like Burke absolutely loved Hartley.

I'm guessing that with all the recent layoffs in the media gig that he thinks his time maybe up so he jumped at the opportunity to be back in the hockey biz. Haha, jk.

I hope Burke puts up a sign in his office that says, "They won a Goddamn lottery and they got the best player in the game. Is that available to me?"

He always spoke of the Flames in the beat light on the panel. Going to miss that now with him gone. Won't be anyone left to defend the Flames as Hrudey is much less a homer while on the panel and not doing colour for a Flames game.

Burke in his book wrote about coaches like Hartley having a shelf life, and how he had to go as towards the end he was to the point of taking things too far, for example calling guys out when on the plane. It went from demanding to toxic.

So depends on what Burke thinks they need and what the window is, but I don’t see it

I think most coaches have a shelf life, even the nicer guys. Eventually the message just gets repetitive. It seems that's the case with Sullivan, who I think has shown he can be one of the best coaches in the league
