Next we come for the fans. Benning is doing a great job turning the fans off the product and with a couple of beloved Canucks on our roster it is a matter of time before you and everyone else joins the C of Red!!

We will welcome you with open arms

Often he just jumps in to defend the league or excuse a terrible job being done by a referee. My general conclusion is that I couldn't care less what he thinks about whatever is under discussion and would rather he just leave the analysis to Elliotte and company.

Wish they'd just give the ball to Jeff Marek. He has his flaws too but at least his quirkyness is kind of endearing, and he's an excellent host in the sense of setting up the panelists to provide the content they're there to provide without interfering with them.
I like your take on things but Marek to me is insufferable. It’s like he eats hockey all the time and he dies to be Maclean lite. He knows the sport but he think of hockey as a religion. He reads every book and quotes it and thinks of the writers as Nobel prize winners and it drives me nuts. I wish he’d talk about things outside the sport somewhat but that’s all he cares about and it seems forced. Ahh he’s annoying.

Sad news re Team 1040. I liked their pointless hockey banter and often listened to the station on longer drives and especially when the Canucks were about to - or just did - play the Flames. Seems incredible to me that it's being shuttered.

Yeah. Totally agreed. David Amber comes across as a guy who will let the main guys talk and wants to learn and ask secondary questions. He comes across as genuine. Clearly a vet. Someone mentioned Duthie and he’s the same with more humour. Both guys I personally really enjoy because of their genuine nature.

Capitalism has nothing to do with it. There are exactly three big media companies in Canada: Bell, Rogers, and the CBC. And that is the way it is because that's how our friends the politicians like it, and they have rigged the laws to make it impossible for other people to enter the business.

You don't get monopolies without the active collaboration of governments.

ObOnTopic: IIRC, Strombo wasn't let go because the old fogeys wanted MacLean back, but because Rogers was making massive cuts (just like Bell is now) and Strombo was easier to get rid of. MacLean had a big contract that they would have had to buy out.

It's the same in any dying business. In fact, one easy way to tell if a business is dying is by looking at the good people they let go and the bozos that they keep.

Wouldn't mind seeing The Athletic or a 3rd party step in and bring back the "Team 1040"

Use to love listening to the US shows that would be on 1040 late at night.

Dan Russell Sportstalk back in the day had some great callers. Good ol days.

I used to listen to some late night sports talk show out of Van in the 90s with Tony Gallagher and "Squire Barnes".

WTF is Squire Barnes?

If the quality of 1040 was so much better than Sportsnet radio, you'd have to think Rogers will be trying to grab as many of the old TSN people as possible. Of course money might be an issue as well.

If you look at the ratings, it makes sense why they made this decision (here's the most-recent numbers from the end of August through November): https://assets.numeris.ca/Downloads/...plineRadio.pdf

CKST is TSN, CISL is Sportsnet. TSN was the 4th-lowest rated station in the market. Sportsnet is one of the three stations with worse numbers, but that doesn't mean TSN's numbers were good.

Even if everyone who listened to TSN switches to Sportsnet, Bell can still probably get similar numbers for a significantly lower cost with whatever new format the station switches to.

On the Onrait front, when TSN finally called up Calgary sideline reporter vet Jermain Franklin a few months ago and made him an (occasional) anchor, I was actually very impressed and surprised to see how well him & Jay clicked when he filled in for a vacationing O'Toole for a few days. Especially after NFL night games..you could tell he's a legit big NFL fan. He has that same dry wit and they seemed really comfortable together, he even genuinely made Jay crack up a couple times.

Obviously with the new title of the show: "Jay on SC", I'm guessing he'll be hosting solo..but I'd like to see those 2 paired up again, even occasionally. Happy to see Jermaine getting a long overdue push too, I just assumed he was happy being a Calgary-based sideline guy forever.

So sad to hear about TSN1040. I listened to that station a lot through university. The AM show with Scott Rintoul and Botchford was so hilarious and fun. It was a bright spot on a lot of tough days.

Bell Sucks.
