Which is why I doubt it was Nichushkin, because they have plenty of players like Jost, but not enough like Nichuskin.

Regardless, I'd be happy with either one, but I'd be happier if Bennett cemented a role on Mony and Johnny's wing and became the power forward this team desperately needs.

Lol

Of course Treliving had a deal "almost done" and of course something happened to nix it.

Jost would be great in return for Bennett. It would add some speed to the forward group and give the Flames a young skilled player who still may end up a decent top 6 forward.

Not blaming Treliving for anything.

Just sick and tired of hearing about all of these trades over the last few years (most of which I wished would have happened) falling through for a multitude of reasons. It's always ####ing something.

The Kadri deal
The Hall deal
The Zucker deal
Etc

They fall thru because Tre is a good trader who won't be taken advantage of.

Bad trades are easy to make.

Good trades take effort and might fall thru.

That's not why any of those examples didn't go through.

The Hall deal was never really that close. It just leaked that the Flames made an aggressive hockey deal that made them second guess doing the Arizona deal. Hindsight I am glad that deal fell through as the Flames wanted an extension in place which would have been pre-Covid and likely has them in tough to sign Markstrom. I am also happy we still have Hanifin.

Zucker sounded okay at the time but we are not really sure what happens there. Sounds like the Wild had something on their end get screwed up at the last minute. With how decent the Pelletier pick looks today I am happy it also fell through.

The Kadri deal is a kick in the nuts because Brodie is a Leaf anyway and Jankowski was bad enough to not be qualified. This one stings the most in failed trades.

I get your point though. We are always rumored to be in the mix and we haven’t seen that huge trade many are craving since the Hamilton deal coming up on 3 years ago. Having said that in 2 of the 3 examples I am happy it worked out the way it did.

and standing still is a sure fire path to failure.

Treliving hasn’t executed at a high level GM for quite some time.

Why would the avs shutting down nix the deal? The avs player would still have to do covid protocol anyways.

Maybe the player coming back is in protocol.

So you might be without him for up to a month depending on if he was positive or not.

I've been an advocate for making changes to the forward group, and I still am. But if the market isn't there, the market isn't there.

But let's remind ourselves what Tree did in the off-season
- He brought in a #1
- He turned over half his blueline
- he turned over the bottom 3 forward group

We can debate if that was enough, or even if those were the right moves. But it sure ain't standing still.

Quite sure we would not have had the cap space to sign Markstrom and Tanev in off season if we had Kadri on the books right now (4.5 m/yr). We would have had to settle for one of them at best.

Would have kept Lindholm on the wing had it happened though.

You don't think Markstrom is a good goalie? I'd say he has been the MVP on the team so far.

By that standard, there are no good GMs. At this point in the season, nobody has made the playoffs.

I might be dreaming this, but I think it got leaked that the Zucker deal was contingent on another trade or a third team to make the cap hit balance out, and that 3rd party backed out or found a better deal elsewhere.

I can't really fault him on trades or signings that fell through. I am willing to bet it's very common and has always been common, but for whatever reason, the information leaks out more than it used to. The Flames seem to be one of leakier clubs in the past few years, which could be a minor problem. Someone with connections to the front office seems to like to talk. It's better for everyone when things are kept quiet until the trade call is actually made or the contract approved by the league.
