A small part of me died when Leslie did that.
And it was brought up (and barfed upon in the GT), but Leslie is usually good, and has earned some wiggle room.

Even though I like discussing it, I don’t get all that bothered by the PBP crew.
That being said, anyone remember when Bell had special commentator free Olympic coverage?
Or when CBC was on strike so we got PBP free hockey broadcasts?
One thing I noticed is how much fans are influenced by the call. I’d love to see an in depth study in it. Like the number of times a Flames player is mentioned or highlighted directly correlates to fan opinion of that players performance.
It adds a level of unintended bias I find fascinating. Watching without commentary, not only can be more enjoyable as a fan getting to directly consume the product, but also removes a lot of that influence and bias from the fan perception of a player/team’s performance.
Btw both baseball and football do not benefit the same way. They are actually painfully boring, almost unwatchable on tv, without commentary. There’s just so much dead time. So, so much. Commentary is an absolute necessity.
Hockey, I could totally go either way honestly.

You know the radio feed is also streamed. You can pause both on any device until they match up. Why would they give the option to switch to
Radio when different companies own the radio broadcasts rights in different cities?

Oh I do Boreal but that would require effort hahahahaha was half kidding you know; I too am like Cecil and try not to let commentators upset me too much but I too have watched hockey without any commentators going and it is quite enjoyable the only thing I miss is the sound of the play itself.

Craig Simpson is the best color guy hands down on Snet. Perfect mix of analysis and color and being very well spoken and be able to naturally and efficiently communicate thoughts without rambling, sounding like he is forcing stories, or talking down to viewers.
As mentioned, he and Ball did the late game last week and watched a bit more of it then I would (Van/ Wpg) because the overall level of commentary was excellent.

So of the dozens of NHL color “guys” out there, who actually provides anyone with new insight into the actual game? I’m hard pressed to name one that is particularly insightful and when I watch, it’s just mainly background noise. Some nice rapport with the PBP person can make the viewing experience more pleasant.
IMO football and golf are where the announcers are really worth listening to. And a couple of the NBA color folks are good. I like Doris Burke and Van Gundy.
But hockey. It’s been a long time since any in game analysis has struck me as really improving the viewing experience.

Does anyone have the video of McDavid running over Markstrom?
Never heard of anyone having the "right of way" in a hockey game.

This!
I often watch at night while my wife is either asleep or watching some period piece on N'flix or Amazon, so I have headphones. I just take them off and watch the game in silence a LOT unless there's something I want to know about. I (mostly) skip the talking heads in the intermissions.
Still, what I'd like is a feed that is just the sounds of the rink (and crowd, when there is a real one again), no PbP and no distractions. Like sitting in the arena.
I don't bother with other sports because they ARE too boring.
And, sometimes, if I can, I watch the other team's feed if I feel like streaming and being 3 minutes behind. Some are OK, some are terrible. Few are good.

Man am I glad I missed the "right of way" discussion on the broadcast. That might make sense in non contact hockey, but the NHL? Laughable. This isn't formula 1 where 2 parties can't be in the same space. It is supposed to be a contact sport.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

The biggest thing that pisses me off about hockey broadcasts? When they have agendas, and narratives that they're building regardless of evidence.
You're there to tell the story of what's happening on the ice. You're there to make what's actually happening in the game more interesting - show us small details that can help fill in the gaps of the emotional tale of the 60 minutes. It happens multiple times in games now where someone's trying to tell a story/push their agenda, and when they cut to the replay it doesn't match up at all so they bumble what they're saying or spit it out anyways regardless of the facts.
I don't need to listen to 60 minutes of made up stories that have nothing to do with what's happening during the game. No agenda. Watch, react. Show a better understanding of the game rather than interjecting a bunch of bs.
To be dramatic, on some nights it feels like I'm actually watching the death of what I believe to be an art.

I just stepped into the PGT and had to double check that we actually won even though I watched the game. Some of you are probably glad we're in a lockdown so you don't have to be your fun self at parties.
As for the actual game, there's something I'm not understanding but maybe someone with more X's & O's knowledge of hockey can answer. When the opposing team is cycling the Flames zone 5 on 5, why do the players give such a wide berth to the other team?
I'm seeing upwards of two stick lengths between the Flames defender and opposing team player. It's leading to wide open point shots and continued cycling. Shouldn't the Flames close in on the man at some point especially at the point(s) and/or along the boards?

So dumb.
Flames got possession, Johnny took off for the outlet. That’s what smart players are supposed to do.

This is why people don't like Cassie's commentary. Couldn't just give a quick take on the injury had to wax poetic on how heroic McJesus was for coming back from injury and even piled on top of that with more superlatives.

I thought the Flames did a very good job of this. They didn't give the Oilers a lot of 5 bell shots from the point and didn't allow any rebounds or walk off the boards play. They also didn't allow any out man sistuations down low. With a goaltender like we have point shots are no concern, and walking out on a point shooter creates a lot of slot opportunities. The oilers wasted a lot of time on the outside, it might have looked impressive but it didn't generate any scary moments.

That got a huge eye roll, but for that rehab Sportsnet did a full documentary on that, so she's really just toeing the company line there.
The bigger one was showing how he got bumped and jostled around a little bit by Backlund over 25 seconds on a random shift as every player on every shift usually has happen to them, and she was showing this to specifically be praising his fortitude for not retaliating as if Backlund had stolen his newborn puppy.

I thought Valimaki showed some signs of improvement the last few games. His pass selection is the most identifiable need for improvement, noe and then he throws a real head scratcher. That said love his skating, he is gonna be a bonafide top 4 d man in no time.
