What Bennett should have done is asked his agent to shut his yapper and work this outside of the media.
He agent/Bennett unintentionally (at least I think unintentionally) threw Lucic under the bus by implying his line mates were inadequate and the reason for the trade request in the first place. Not sure I'd be lining up to go to bat for a teammate like that.

This is professional sports. If the coach decides to scratch a player, the player knows why. It's because they sucked. More detail is great but isn't always a priority on game day.
|
I'm sure Ward could have managed a 1-minute conversation about it.
The "special sit down" and "didn't call his mom" lines are pretty stupid. A coach's job is to coach. Letting players known why you make decisions is part of coaching in professional sports. Most coaches are able to communicate this in minutes of conversation, if not seconds. A peer-reviewed essay is not required.
Ward had no problem giving an explanation to the media. Is he coaching the media? My bad, I thought he was coaching the players.
And sure, Sam's stat line sucks. But directly prior to the scratch he was playing better and playing up the lineup. It would seem weird to go from that to practicing with the taxi squad for any player.

Dubois asked for a trade and kept playing. Lots of players have gone through that.
|
Technically Dubois kept playing, but not really. The one game was so bad that Torts benched him actively during the game.
This isn’t much different.

You might be in for a rude awakening if you think every player is given a special sit down every time they get scratched. The coaches have better things to worry about than manage players' delicate feelings.
It's more a reflection of a player not putting in the time during their video review, not improving on the things the coaching staff have already told them to improve.
Like I said, if a player is scratched, they already know why. If they don't, it is usually a reflection of their own shortcomings.

a. Do you know that about Simon?
b. What do you say about a player who doesn't know why he's been scratched and also doesn't bother to ask why. Either he knows very well, he doesn't want to improve himself or he has just decided he's being treated unfairly and he's not even gonna try any more.

I'm getting a lot of vibes from the baertschi trade. Some people were still convinced he'd be a 1st liner and couldn't stand the way the organization treated him. Everyone else saw him for the bottom 6er that he was. I remember one poster even saying he threw a chair when sven got traded.
It's fine to support a player but to blame literally everyone else for his struggles and take every little day to day thing as a slight against him is just odd fanboyism.
I like Bennett, I wish him the best wherever he ends up going, but he doesn't require special treatment

You have no idea what Ward can and cannot do. He's got a game to coach. He doesn't care about Sam Bennett's feelings.
Sam can wait until the next practice and get the explanation from the Asst coach.

How many times did Bennett's name come up in trade rumours? Management is always contemplating a "change of scenery". Of course a player is a pro so they always play through it... so an agent starts leaking frustrations, and now fans (and management!) are butt hurt and want to kick him out before he is dealt?!?
Double standard and not a good look

If we can get a Rasmus for Bennett at this point I'd be pretty pleased.

This would be all good and fine if the coach didn’t just say that he played well after the last Montreal game and the first two games against the Jets this week and wanted to build off those performances, if it really was performance-related then he contradicted himself.
Reeks more like a classic Hartley move the more I think about it. From that, to the defensive comments he made about how he gave Sam a “choice” between C (but didn’t bother to say 4th C) and W, to having him practicing with the Taxi Squad instead of the main roster (which is weird, scratch or no scratch).
This was poorly handled, no doubt about it.

Seems like a common theme among young players who get a little too big for their britches and assume it must be their coach's fault or org's fault etc.
Keep in mind these guys have likely been treated like superstars and royalty since they were 12. Now they're no longer top dog, being given 3rd/4th line minutes, scracthed. This is all after being a highly touted prospect by the Flames who continually pumped the guy's tires for years.
So yeah, it sucks to be treated as a cast off but welcome to the life of an NHL fringe player.
The absolute worst thing anyone can do, especially Sam Bennett, is take the scratch personal. It shows a lack of life experience and maturity.

It shouldn't be a mutiny for veterans to haver disagreements with the coach. The sooner you resolve it, the better. It would be naiive to think it doesn't happen.
Unity amongst the players is important. You heard Monny last weak preach about playing for each other.

Sam Bennett does NOT want to be on this team.
He wants to quit the Calgary Flames. Full stop.
Should this organization be bending over backwards for him?
How can Sam not know that he could be a healthy scratch? Was it that pass to Backlund from behind the net that keeps getting talked about? He must read CP. It's obviously gone to his head.
Jesus.

Definitely, mutiny would be an extreme. But what you posted is only true if the players are on Sam's side. I'd bet they aren't. He's made himself a sideshow for the media and has now aired his dirty laundry in the media instead of acting like a mature adult.
If anything, Gio will be pulling him aside and telling him to STFU and start worrying about 2 points on Saturday. These guys are not used to being coddled. I don't think they'll be showing Sam a ton of sympathy.

Got it.
Seems like a fair question for the media to ask the coach. Why didn't Bennett practice with the club?
Not that I'd expect a transparent answer. Ward went out of his way to tell everyone that Bennett chose to play wing over center so obviously the relationship isn't great.

It's funny that you don't think anyone can know if Ward has a spare minute in his day to talk to a player, but you seem to have a pretty good idea what Ward thinks, what Gio thinks, and what the rest of the players think.
Glad to be in a world where reading minds is suddenly more realistic than basic time management.
