Often forgotten or outright ignored when talking Bennett and rates:

First and foremost, he’s known for taking bad penalties, and frequently taking them in the offensive zone. Over the last two seasons only four forwards have taken more penalties-per-60 than Bennett: Antoine Roussel, Evander Kane, Nick Ritchie and Miles Wood. He doesn’t draw enough penalties himself to compensate for that and ranks in the bottom 30 in penalty differential as a result.

If he was only statistically good in the Playoffs, sure.

But when he's visibly by far the most effective player for the Flames on a yearly basis, that changes things.

I'd say that perhaps he outplayed his performance in 16-17 and 18-19, but the Flames as a whole won 1 out of 9 games in that span so hard to judge.

In the 2 years (rookie season and this past year) where the Flames actually made some noise, he was very effective, especially in the bubble where he was quite easily one of the Flames' top 2 forwards, if not the best.

30 Playoff games is a decent sample size.

The only information posters have on player value is the opinions of other posters. No one here thinks Sam has any value beyond a 3rd round pick for a few ppl or a bag of pucks for new era. And that might be a tad rich for his liking.

But I suspect (AKA I don't really know but I'll hazard a guess) interested teams value him quite a bit higher than the jaded fan base does.

Keep Sam Bennett and bring back Darryl Sutter as head coach.

Simple.

I think this is a good opportunity to trade depth for need at forward. Out goes Bennett, in comes another RHS forward.

I hope that's how it shakes out.

Ordinarily I think “X always takes bad penalties” is a myth. But the Jets have a really effective power play and it turned the tide last game after a good start by Calgary. Not that they were on Bennett, but penalties need to be avoided tonight.

Bennet looked a little jarred and tentative with his left shoulder immediately following a hit in the two previous games.

I'm not trying to be hostile, but when you watch his game, what do you see? Ranking him in stats league wide doesn't explain that.

I see a player that constantly has the play die on his stick, and lacks awareness. He throws the occasional solid hit. That's about it.
You jumped on a stat post.

All you have to do is look up other comments where I say he isn't getting it done, and hasn't produced or done anything with Backlund and therefore doesn't deserve better linemates.

I'm not defending Bennett as in needed more ice time or better linemates. I'm leaning on both extremes ... in this topic today.

- the give him a chance or don't scratch him over others crowd
- and the tiresome replacement level player crowd

Guess I've managed to piss off both sides.

Bottom line ... I write a damn game story every second night, I don't need the suggestion that I only look at spreadsheets. It's a silly argument as stats guys that love hockey don't abandon the sport to look at spreadsheets, nor would they spreadsheet a sport they don't love.

He's not.

He had two rough games to start the season and has been damn solid five on five since.

I agree though ... no finish.

You play Nordstrom for PK and to avoid the fourth line getting filled in

(all this said with a knowledge that the last 5 game stretch is still only five games).

But Nordstrom on PK is top five in the league for guys with any kind of minutes in prevention.

I really liked 18 year old Sam Bennett. The problem is that I haven’t seen the meaningful development that I desperately want/need from a 4th overall pick. That’s my bias/personal issue because there are plenty of higher picks that never panned out, not just Sam Bennett. And now we have 24 year old Sam Bennett.

I can’t actually answer the question “does he make the Flames better” but Treliving better be selling the crap out of that to suitors. The nice thing about a bidding war is that it sometimes negates a “trade me” request...or should I be unhappy with Treliving that he should have been shopping Bennett all along?

I’d be interested if Bennett was even physically in contact with the other Flames players because I would start the isolation process for Covid travel to the US. Expand the market for such a short season.

I think they would too. A healthy scratch isn't helpful for the sales pitch for Bennett so I'm pretty sure they have something close.

They wouldn't healthy scratch an injured player that is on the trade block.

I don't understand why you'd trade him. He's only 18, 19 years old

The Sam Bennett playoff warrior myth is clearly spiralling out of control for some of you guys.
So you wouldn't consider the players who show up regular season and not playoffs to be good players either. And, I guess you wouldn't consider the Flames a good team.

Whether or not you think Bennett's a good player, he has shown up in the playoffs. Don't see what you're disagreeing with that the team might win more rounds if it had more guys show up the way Bennett does in the playoffs. Subtracting a guy who shows up in the playoffs without adding another player who plays to the same level in the postseason won't help the team win more rounds. It makes the team sound likely to be even more disappointing.

If the Flames can trade for a guy who shows up like playoffs Bennett all year round, Treliving should do it asap and will look like a magician again.

Very good point and I didn't think about that, you don't healthy a guy that you want to trade. Not exactly a selling feature.

If he is just a healthy scratch and they replace him with Simon then that's a head scratcher. Simon in my opinion has been brutal, several others should be sat before Bennett.
If nursing an injury or has played his last game as a Flame would be the only way this makes sense.
