That isn't due diligence though. DD would be crosschecking multiple sources to make sure it's NOT a case of the Rangers just not liking a guy for his political views, or an unfair dogpile which has driven a young player to lash out.
That crosschecking is also how everything leaks, because then multiple people know the Flames es are asking questions about DeAngelo.

That seems plausible, and I can see Treliving wanting to double-check on everything - even if not for right now, but later down the road and have a 'book' on DeAngelo.
Another possibility is that Treliving is circling like a vulture right now and trying to pick at the carcass a bit. Rangers were supposed to be a decent team this season aiming for the playoffs, and now find themselves in a bit of turmoil here. Maybe there are a few assets that Treliving and/or the scouting department covets and he is trying to get them to shake loose.
I think Treliving handled the Peters situation well, especially considering they were friends and he obviously thought highly of Peters. I can't imagine that he would go and give himself another huge headache with DeAngelo, as it will fairly (or playing devil's advocate here, unfairly) bring a huge spotlight and controversy onto this team.
Even if the racial and homophobic slurs didn't happen (or that he learned from these and 'grew up'), he still seems like a terrible teammate, and someone that would be incredibly difficult to bring into any locker room.
DeAngelo also has another year @4.8 million for next season.
I think the Rangers would obviously rather trade him than deal with the legalities of trying to terminate that contract. Keeping him on the Taxi Squad for the rest of the season doesn't make the problem go away (though it probably lessens it), and telling the player to 'go home' and paying him would probably be an issue with the PA.
It is an interesting predicament that the Rangers have on their hands as to how to best deal with DeAngelo at the moment.
If DeAngelo gets traded, it will be interesting to see how that next team deals with him.
