We will see about that.
And what will be your excuse when Calgary does protect Backlund?
(you'll probably say, there was nobody else worth protecting anyway lol)

Assuming the Flames doesn't make major moves involving important players this season, the "must protect" list for me would be:
Markstrom
Andersson - Hanafin - Tanev
Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Lindholm - Dube - Mangiapanne
That's it. And there are expansion draft exposure requirements where teams have to expose 1D and 2F who will be still under contract after the 20-21 season. Gio/Lucic/Backlund are prime candidates for this.

See, that's the thing. I do not post about what I want to see the Flames do.
I try to get a read on what is actually happening in Calgary.
Bennett & Hanifin almost dealt
Kylington, supposedly offered up in trade
Ryan demoted under Ward
smoke around Gaudreau
Giordano losing a step + getting long in the tooth
seeing the team has no confidence playing in front of Rittich (enter Zagidulin)
Teams praise of Ruzicka & Mackey (potential future core players)
I may not agree with all of this ^ but it's out of my control. I'm not going to suggest Calgary should expose Giordano and protect Kylington because I think Oliver could turn into a game breaker in the future, ya know, sadly the Flames coaching staff do not see him as part of the future.
How many posters did not agree with letting TJ Brodie walk, a lot. But there's nothing we could've done about it. The writing was on the wall when Jankowski & Brodie were nearly dealt for Kadri.

What is this about?
Rittich looked pretty great for long stretches behind the same team last year; I don't buy this for a second.

Lol. Zagidulin. Who hasn't shown he can even play at the AHL level, is going to take over for Rittich.
That's hilarious.

At this point it seems more likely than not, and a slam dunk IF Lucic doesn't waive.

Moving into 2020-21 Bennett could still be considered an intriguing trade chip as he was rumored to be a part of a Taylor Hall trade before that fell through. He has one year left on his contract at 2.55M which isn’t exactly huge, but looks to be one of the more movable players if the Flames decided to add salary.
You also have to consider the upcoming expansion draft. At this point you would have to assume the Flames are protecting Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Dube, Backlund, and Mangiapane barring a big season from Bennett or a fall-off from any of those seven.

We all know Brad always has his hands in everything and eventually something will materialize with the (team culture) shake-up.
Treliving will get his hockey deal.
It also feels as if the trade(s) could seem more plausible if they were within the Canadian (North) Division, (due to quarantine issues of the US/Canada border)
Exciting times.

The latter gets truer every day that passes. Trade deadline date is April 12 and the regular season ends May 8. If you are going to trade outside the country you’d better get it done this month to make any impact.

The window to blow this team has passed and BT chose to stick with this group. Doing it now would make no sense.
He needs to find a way to get the secondary scoring going so that this team can actually win games without a goalie playing out of their minds. The top 6 is doing enough to make you comfortable they are on track, but the bottom 4-5 forwards are certainly not getting it done.
If this calls for a trade for a legitimate 2PP, third line winger, so be it so long as the cost is not one of Pelletier, Zary, Wolf or Valimaki.

You’ll have to get by the bubble guards, but I think you have time.

Friedman on Buffalo radio says Bennett trade talks are really heating up and that he thinks the scratching is related.
How about Sam Bennett & Noah Hanifin for...
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Olofsson
Gaudreau - Monahan - Dubé
Mangiapane - Backlund - Ruzicka
Giordano - Andersson
Välimäki - Ristolainen
Mackey - Tanev
Markström

Half of the Sabres are in quarantine. 2 weeks for that then 2 weeks to get to the Flames after arriving in Canada? No thanks.
Also, yeah. Hanifin is reaching that potential. I also would not move him.

No.
If the team had a 4-5-1 stretch mid season no one would bat an eye. Just more annoying at the start of the season.
These types of threads and the GT are honestly embarrassing.
