Calgary has not had a #1 center since Joe Nieuwendyk.
Monahan is a very nice #2 who is fortunate to play with a very capable LW who can get him the puck in the slot.
You need a real #1 center to in a cup. It was exciting to get Jokinen because we thought he was that 90pt gamebreaker. Instead we got Swoopy. Twice.
It was exciting to draft Sam Bennett and then see him score as an 18 year old in the playoffs. And have a four goal game in his rookie season. Unfortunately the ultimate takeaway about a guy who hides a shoulder injury in his draft year is that, yes, he is in fact (sadly) too dumb to be a top player in the NHL. He does too many stupid things to be successful.
Right now our goaltending is AAA. Our defence is probably both as good as its been since Dion’s rookie year, but also has a ton of young potential.
And at forward we have a good 2nd and 3rd line with Johnny and Mony, Lindholm, Backlund, and Tkachuk. Dube and Eat Bread mix in to those top 6.
But no gamebreaking first line center = no long term success.

I agree but I just don't see how the flames can get a top centre during this window.

There is no way they blow it up. Even if the Flames miss the playoffs the changes won't be enough to make any type of major difference. As a fan your best bet is to accept this is what it is, hope they have a bit of success, wait for our team to slowly decline, and then maybe in 5 years we will get another rebuild.

Controlled Burn:
Changes will eventually come to Calgary, most likely the following guys.
Sam Bennett
Derek Ryan
Noah Hanifin
Oliver Kylington
David Rittich
Mark Giordano
Johnny Gaudreau
The Flames will be lucky to receive significant assets for Johnny and Hanifin.
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
______ - Monahan - Dubé
Lucic - Backlund - Pelletier
Zary - Emilio Pettersen - Ruzicka
Välimäki - Andersson
______ - Kinnvall
Mackey - Tanev
Markström
Zagidulin
I should add Gaudreau and Giordano may NOT be moved immediately but could be dealt in the teams contingency plans. (if things go downhill)

Why Hanifin, do you think? I see weakness on the left D, I'd keep Hanifin around, I think he's improving.

Gio is going no where.
He is still a useful player at 20 minutes a night and eats, sleeps, and breathes Calgary Flames.
Why are some people trying to push players out who are good and WANT to be here.
I look forward to him becoming the second Flame to play 1000 games next season.

Because he's looked slow and at times just awful over the last 2 seasons, and we learned a few years ago not to hold onto "assets" until they have no value? Seattle expansion is coming. I protect Valimaki, Tanev, and Ras before Gio.

If there's one place Mark Giordano may be happier playing than here, it's Toronto.

Yeah. So he won the Norris trophy the season before last

You're right, felt like longer to me I guess because of the split season last year. I thought he was rusty looking early, and I thought he was still rusty looking later when they picked up again and did the playoffs. Talking 2019-2020 season.
I thought Gio looked tired and slow when they played the Avs in the playoffs and got smashed in the face, he looked to me like he had no way to combat a fast team. That's the same year he won the Norris, yeah? 2018-2019 season. That season ended with a disgraceful performance from everyone but Mike Smith really.
So I don't think he's looked like vintage Gio for a while here, it's not 2 years, but it's 1.5 stretching to the end of the season before last. I think he pushed like hell after that arm injury, and it won him the Norris to do so. It also cost him physically and maybe mentally, I dunno. But you show me a recent game where Giordano has skated, hit, and dominated like he used to. It ain't there and hasn't been 2019.

Hanifin has been great since he got away from Hamonic. I would be hesitant to let him go.

Gio won't get picked by Seattle even if he is exposed.
But I am concerned about the ROI for Backlund. While this year he is OK, but I don't think he will be a $5.35 mil player for the remainder of his contract. Don't even know if Seattle will pick him if he is exposed either.
It may come down to the Flames exposing Gio, Backlund, Lucic, and Bennett and Seattle won't pick any one of them because of various reasons (age, ROI from their contracts, etc.)

Less than a year till the expansion draft, let's see how well this quote ages.
I cannot envision any scenario where Mikael Backlund is not protected by the Flames.

I dont think anyone would want Backlund on that contract. He doesn't need to be protected.
