Johnny has been my favourite player since he joined the organization, but I'm a flames fan first. If the writing is really on the wall that he's not re-signing here, we absolutely need to cash in that chip, even if we're worse in the short-term.

I agree with this from the standpoint of what is best for the team. I have voiced multiple times that trading Gaudreau for a valuable return is probably in the best interest for the club and cap wise. The narrative that Francis spews though is complete and utter BS, there has been nothing to indicate at all that if the money worked he would not stay in Calgary. Quite the opposite actually.

Then who will carry the puck in (and subsequently give it away)? I'd be fine with trading either one of them and maybe both if the return is right.

Wut?
I'm not sure Francis could look out a window and tell you what the weather is like in Calgary let alone this.

Based on Francis past history I am 1/2 expecting a Johnny extension next week.

Players can only re-sign in the last year of their deal.
Earliest he can sign is at the end of the season.

Yeah but they can still have negotiations and a contract in place and agreed upon to be signed. I can’t see them negotiating in bad faith.

The fact that Ryan Leslie so adamantly agreed with Francis about his assertions regarding Gaudreau strengthened my belief that what he said was probably true. Say what you will about Francis, I think Leslie has integrity, and wouldn't lie or exaggerate. Both guys travel around the team behind the scenes, and both were quite sure when they talked about it, as opposed to bringing it up as only rumour or conjecture. I can honestly see Gaudreau bolting.

Leslie agrees with everything Francis says. He is like a Francis fanboy or comes across that way.

I think more than likely Gaudreau leaves as a UFA.
He may love Calgary, he may love the Flames.
But his family is in Philly, his GF is in Philly and his heart is there.
He is gonna go to Philly as soon as he gets his chance.

Not a huge factor, but something to consider - Didn't JG get married/engaged last summer? Doesn't his Fiance/wife work as a nurse in PHA? Seeing how close JG is to his family, unless his fiance move to get her Canadian nursing accreditation, I think him walking as a UFA is a done deal.
I am also not scared of his NTC - the five teams are likely to be the main East Coast teams - PHA, NYR, NJD, WSH, NYI.
I don't think a trade to PHA works without someone like Voracek and his $8 coming back. No way are they moving Konecny or Nolan. They are too close to the cap ceiling.
I'd look to NJD. They have a ton of space & need a dynamic winger to play with their stud centers. Though I would be happy with Zacha + 1st + prospect, how about this - (if one could determine that NJD is one of the 5 teams) wait until bonus' are paid and trade him straight up for PK. After bonuses PK make only $2M (yes, his is $9M against the cap). Then after the season, before FA, flip him to Seattle for a pick and expansion draft considerations.
Just spitballing.

He had the chance before ever signing with the Flames. He said at the end of the year for his family, gf, and himself Calgary was like a second home and he wanted to stay (despite Francis trying to force him to say otherwise). Except for the ramblings of the media trying to find a story there has been no indication he wants to bolt to Philly.

What else is he gonna say?
Just think about it logically. If his entire family, his fiance and his long term house on the Jersey shore are there, is he really going to want to commit to another long term contract going into his 30s?
I doubt it.

I doubt it's a situation where he's 100% turning down any extension no matter the details so he can leave. But would he rather play near home if theres a chance? Of course

The primary factor is the contract terms. Also there’s the factors of team success (or lack), happiness with coaching, and his past relationship with Treliving (it depends on how badly he still feels about the last negotiations). Family, favourite team etc is tertiary at best.

Johnny Gaudreau will most likely not re-sign with the Flames when he gets to free agency. His wife to be is from Eastern US. His Family is in Eastern US. He hates flying. Honestly things are so stacked against him signing another contract with the Flames that you have to be glass overfilled to think of reasons of staying that would trump his list of reasons to leave. The 8th year is the only thing the Flames have and if that's the case they need to be talking extension immediately in the offseason because if he's not re-signing he needs to be moved.

When a player says "this place is like a second home to me" they mean "secondary" home but their first home is their actual home.
What do you expect him to say? "I love Calgary and love playing here. As soon as my contract is up, I'm going back to my real home but I'll always cherish my time here"

I remember when no thought he was going to sign with the Flames out of College, stop pretending you know what’s important to Johnny. Only he knows, playing for your hometown team comes with all other kinds of issues and pressure.
