I could see Ottawa being a team where Bennett could fit in and get the opportunity he thinks he deserves.

I wonder if they would do a Bennett/Galchenyuk swap. I would do it from a Flames perspective, which probably makes it a bad deal for Otttawa though.

Bennett for Ondrej Kase + 3rd round pick from Boston. Both have nearly identical cap hit, both up for renewal at end of year as RFA. Boston adds the 3rd because Kase has a history with concussions and is currently on IR.

Just spit-balling but I think best trade opp is to look at RFA's next year or the following, on teams against the cap.

Teams that can use a good third line centre, and be willing to give him an extended look there. Chicago, Florida, Nashville.

Mangiapane has been the Flames best forward at points/60 five on five in the last year and a half.

That's proving it.

Is he off to a great start? No
Did he play particularly well in the playoffs? No

But he has a productive track record. Bennett isn't at that level.

On the topic of Mangiapane, I find it curious that the same argument that Bennett has been continuously saddled with deadweight and is the victim of circumstance could just as easily be applied to Mangiapane.

Difference being, that when Mangiapane was playing 4th line mins with Ryan and Hathaway he excelled and forced his way up the line up. Right past Sam Bennett, no less.

While Mangiapane was playing with Ryan, Bennett was playing with Jankowski and Neal.

Really, I think this entire situation only exists because the Calgary Flames are just a generally poor quality organization when it comes to the on-ice product.

Our bottom six has been complete garbage since Treliving took over, and now in his 7th year - he has never fixed it. He inherited Monahan, Gaudreau and Giordano - and they have effectively been the driving pieces of this team. During the years of peak Giordano, Treliving could never add meaningful depth to the team, could never hire a quality coach, and could never acquire a top-15 goalie. This has all driven the poor performances in the playoffs, and why I personally have such a high level of annoyance towards this Bennett situation.

Bennett is our best playoff performer, and between the end of the playoffs and beginning of the season, the team continually pushes him back down the roster with garbage signings. They may have their reasons, but they clearly aren't in any way valid reasons - because year in and year out we've seen the same story play out with more garbage signings of irrelevant players. Seeing where Benny started this season was where I kind of just accepted that he needs to go elsewhere. There is no way in hell Leivo or Simon deserved to be higher in the roster than Bennett, and no way in hell would anyone competent have looked at Lucic-Bennett-Nordstrom line and thought "that's got potential".

I flat out don't believe the organization hires good pro scouts, nor do they hire good coaching staffs. It drives so many of the problems that this team has had year in and year out, and it is why in the 7 years of Treliving we just haven't become anything more than we were in year 1 when it comes to actual on ice results in the playoffs, which is what the endgame of everything is all about.

I hope the Flames can't spin this situation into a win for the team, and I hope Benny does well elsewhere - more importantly, I hope it happens quickly.

^^^ I meant to say “CAN” spin this situation into a win. Brilliant typo.

I hope he fails just so we don't have to read I told you so posts for 5 years.

Realistically, I think wherever he goes, he will be the same player.

There are maybe a handful of players over the last decade that played as much as Bennett and then broke out. Is Wheeler the last one?

Rip off the bandaid, send Sam Bennett away now...

Penguins for Colton Sceviour or Cody Ceci
Leafs for Jimmy Vesey or Travis Dermott
Devils for Pavel Zacha or Connor Carrick

Bennett had been passed by Mangiapane and Dube as many of us who said we waited too long to trade kept predicting. Next will be one or both of Pelletier or Zary.

Monahan, Lindholm and Backlund all better at Center with Ryan more capable on 4th line and good on PK.

Bennett will excel after we trade him as many fear but in KHL or Swiss league after team we trade with dumps him and regrets wasting pick like we did with Curtis Lazar.

People are proposing the Devils would trade Jack Hughes for Bennett? The same Jack Hughes who is currently leading the Devils in scoring?

I think thjs is a classic example of seeing what you wanted to see, or selectively remembering exactly what happened. I sure don't recall him playing any different at all from how he has looked since then.

Maybe that is the point: the fact is that he has not been mishandled, and this is what he is and always would have been.

And there it is. Nameplate before sweater. Not surprised in any way.

Personally, I hope Bennett gets traded for something of value for the club. Once he's gone I won't give two ####s about Sam Bennett. Just like every other player on every other team, I hope they fail miserably, especially against the Flames. I'm a Flames fan, not a Sam Bennett fan, or Johnny Hockey fan, or any other individual player fan. I cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey, not the nameplate on the back. I suggest you do the same, or follow your hero to his new team when he leaves. But if you do, my advice is to take some classes in German or Finnish, because Bennett is on that trajectory.

I know more than nhl pro scouts, I know what a good nhl scout is even though I’ve never met one and don’t know the first thing about their job, i know more than amateur scouts, I know about the behind closed door goings on of the flames organization, I know who deserves ice time and who doesn’t, I know who has potential and who is a lost cause, I know more than the Calgary flames GM, I know more than the Calgary flames coach, the assistant coaches, the assistant GM, the president of hockey ops and on and on. Basically I’m smarter than everyone in the whole organization.

But the players? The one aspect of the organization where I have direct video evidence of their abilities? Who have public statistical analysis made available to me? Yeah that means nothing. It is the secret behind the scenes info that only I know that matters.

And because of all this, I expect and want the team to fail so that I can once again prove to myself that I’m smarter than an entire professional sports organization.

That’s what you sound like comixzone.

First line players are first line players even when they play on the fourth line. They show that they drive play, make smart decisions, and use their linemates as effectively as possible. They force the coach to move them up in the lineup because it’s obvious that they need to be on the ice more often. Sadly, Bennett hasn’t shown this...at least not on a consistent basis.

Giving Bennett tons of time on the top two lines when we have seen that he can be a liability for those lines, isn’t good for the team.

I’m pretty sure the Flames have never held a vendetta against their highest draft pick ever. They wanted him to succeed as much as any player that they’ve had on their team. Unfortunately, the product on the ice hasn’t met the hopes we all had for him.
