Bennett for Rieder.

But I didn't think I would miss Rieder. He was a solid player for the Flames.

I find it odd that you would hope for him to succeed as another strike against our gm. But I guess your dislike runs that deep
I think the Bennett development, of lack thereof, is in part due to the flames mismanagement.

I am very vocal in my opinion that treliving is a highly average GM. The handling of Bennett has been under his watch, so how could it not be a 'strike'?

And i would suggest Ryan is a MUCH better C than Bennett is as well.

And IIRC during the playoffs last year that Sam, as engaged as he was, was getting his head caved in taking draws. Its just another thing he is, at best, mediocre at.

Does that honestly make sense for you?

He started camp on the third line with Dube and Lucic. It didn't click. They moved him to center on the fourth line and the line got filled in. They moved him to the third line with quality players and kept him there because he wasn't getting out played for the most part, but couldn't produce.

That's not tanking a player.

My point though was the group of players around him suggest he gets the chances based on shot metrics but he's an undeniable presence on lines that don't put the puck in the net. That can't be bad luck year over year.
Actually, I think its more that they know they can move him about and play him where other players are not as versatile.
Don't think they're actively tanking his season or whatever.

Just sucks because all the Flames brass did this offseason was say to anybody that listened they were going to run him at center. And then less than 20 minutes into game 1 it was over. The questio. Shouldn't be is it Bennetts fault but why couldn't the players do anything in their roles that he swapped in for on other lines. Namely Ryan being hot dog poop unless he plays 4c.

So theres that angle as well.

Wards praised his versatility more than once.

No, Bennett hasn't played so good to earmark a permanent role in CGY but he's also been used to plug holes. So that kind of points to a 50/50 failure acceptance from Bennett and the team.

Honestly, all I ever wanted was one full season of him locked into one position and play with usable linemates.

Dube may have been the driver of that line but it worked. There was hockey jazz going on there. Which is what you want. You want all lines to succeed. Just a shame they broke that up before we could see 8f there was sustainable success for them.

It really has been and always will be my greatest source of frustration with the Bennett/Flames debate.

He was electric in the playoffs but did he get anywhere near the amount of ice time as JG? The eye test was extremely obvious that he was our best player against Winn and Dal and yet no matter what he did his line didn’t get more ice time than the “1st line”.
When Bennett was hot in the post-season his ice time continued to grow. He went from a low of 10:47 to a high of 20:52 when he had his three point game. And no #### he's not going to get more ice time than the 1st line. They've proved well beyond a shadow of doubt they can produce, so you have to give them ice time to produce for the team. A large part of the reason that Bennett's line was able to produce was because the 1st line was receiving the attention of the best defensive pair and forwards. Bennett actually took advantage of that and his line produced, although I still contend it was Dillion Dube who stirred the drink and not Sam Bennett. Might be why Bennett and Lucic look lost out there without Dube to provide the speed and puck skill?

Sam "Electric" Bennett. The legend continues to grow. Too bad it's been a massive black-out for him in the 2021-22 season so far.

Sam Bennett was Brad Trelivimg's first ever draft pick. If he in any way is guilty of mismanaged him, it was by hoping for too much, too soon. Not by blocking his development as some are suggesting.

One team that is notoriously bad at developing talent is Florida. Henrik Borgstrom and Aleksi Heponiemi are both stuck in AAAA hockey, to good for the minors, but no real shot at the majors. (Aleksi Heponiemi just got his first goal in his first game yesterday, as a highly touted 2017pick)

Happy to move Bennett and Ryan over there for them, and plug them both on the third and fourth line for an extended grace period.

If you want to blame BT because he didnt send Bennett to the AHL for some seasoning.....OK.

But beyond that how he has been "handled" has been entirely up to the 4 coaching staffs Sam has played for. Yet every one of them ended up playing him down the line up. Why do you think that is? Do you think its a good idea for a GM to tell the coach who to play and in which line that player should be on?

Apparently, Bob Hartley was the key cog that enabled Sam to excel.

Apparently, Sam should be playing C,

Is Sam better at C than Monahan, Lindholm or Backlund? Or even Ryan?

Remember Bob’s “go to” favorite phrase....

“Always earned, Never given.”

Maybe Sam needs to earn it, all by himself...baby steps, 5 years in.

How are those two things not connected? Too much too soon, then basically the opposite.

Bennett had a better rookie season. Devil's need to get value for Hughes now before he's worth nothing.

Fair and I tend to agree. But Bennett was incredible when he got inserted in the playoffs. His skill and creativity at top speed was special. Looked like sure-fire superstar.

That wasn't Bob's phrase that was the marketing slogan for the year.

Fine. We can categorize it was "poor coaching hires". It all falls under the head of the management team, any way you want to look at it, in my opinion.

Good idea. I guess the question is; how much do the Devils need to add to make this happen?

Agreed, 100% one of those cases where it has to happen now to make sense for the Devils.
