Maybe, but he was right at the bench when he first passes to McD, so he could have been off and his replacement would have been just as quick to the middle of the ice.

What Oilers draft outside of the 1st round over the past decade actually went on to become an NHLer? Just going through the wikilist, these are the only ones I've even heard of:

Tyler Pitlick (2010) - 2nd round
Martin Marincin (2010) - 2nd round
Brandon Davidson (2010) - 6th round
Toby Rieder (2011) - 4th round
Jujhar Khaira (2012) - 3rd round
Erik Gustafsson (2012) - 4th round
Caleb Jones (2015) - 4th round
Ethan Bear (2015) - 5th round

Man, what a putrid list.

Last I checked (it's been a while) they haven't had a player drafted outside of the first round that has played over 200 games in an Oilers jersey in 15 years.

Khaira and Lander have both played a little over 200 games with them (220 and 215).

Prior to that, Petry in 2006

Also, before he made it to the NHL, they traded Rieder for a guy who never played an NHL game and they chose to not sign Gustafsson after the draft and he went to Chicago as a UFA.

So, the best two players on that list were let go by the Oilers before they even played their first NHL games.

There's also John Marino, who they drafted in the 6th round in 2015. He's looking pretty good in Pittsburgh after forcing a trade from the Oilers in 2019.

What happened to James Neal? Is he actually playing, or have the Oilers braintrust decided to park his $5.75m salary on the taxi squad?

From 2010 until 2016, (seven drafts), the Oilers drafted a forward in the top 4 overall - SIX TIMES! Never mind the high picks from other rounds.

Out of that, they currently have 3 NHL caliber forwards on their roster.

He is officially "unfit to play".

It's been speculated that he showed up grossly out of shape.

This truly is where the fun starts. Looking at the David Musil & Mitch Moroz picks.

Now 31st overall is a 1st and soon so will 32nd overall.

Don't forget Sam Gagner, he was the first wunder kid of the 5 year rebuild Lowe talked about. 6th overall...in 2007

I think you are being extremely generous to Kostinem. I bet it is over ten points.

I tend to agree. I don't think that element of this gets enough attention: not only did BT get an elite #1 goalie...he took him from one divisional rival and blocked another from getting him.

In my view Markstrom on the Oil would have made them very dangerous. They have MANY problems but Markstrom could have covered up a lot of those issues instantly. The team could have traded offense for offense with teams - knowing they had, at most nights, the better guy between the pipes.

The difference between the Oilers with Markstrom and the Oilers with Koskinen is huge.
