To Ottawa (10.8M cap before trade): Connor McDavid (12.5M), Kassian (3.2M)
To Edmonton (0 cap before trade): Derek Stepan (6.5M), Brady Tkachuk (925K), Erik Brannstrom, 4x 1st round picks.
Edmonton frees up 8.225M and puts that towards Brady's RFA contract. Leaves OTT with 2.575M in cap space.
If I were Edmonton, I'd ask for Tkatchuk, Chabot, and a first. I actually think Ottawa would do it. Their drafting and developing is top notch. They'd be able to build a winner around McDavid.
Very early still, but the 3rd last year from them for the Neal trade was 76th and deferred to this year. Even with Seattle coming on board and making each round 32 picks, it is trending towards around 69th right now.
The rumour on HF/Oilers twitter is that McDavid is dictating who his linemates are.
Not sure I believe it though, but goodness HF especially has kind of turned on McDavid.
Well. Its to be expected. For a host of reasons really.
Primarily, they anointed him as their saviour. The one who would deliver them from mediocrity and raise them into light and bask in the glory of success!
So when those lofty expectations arent only not met, but not even close to existing in reality as we know it, some people are going to feel hurt, and let down.
The thing is though...this largely isnt McDavid's fault.
The fan's and organizations' expectations are not his fault, particularly as they're not grounded in any form of sanity known to man.
Really though, its a transference. The Oilers have foisted all of their problems and issues on to McDavid and then are disappointed when he doesnt make them magically disappear, and they blame him for this.
Seemingly completely oblivious to the fact that these problems are still their fundamental and underlying problems that they've never....not only have they never addressed them, they've failed to even acknowledge them.
It would be like....an alcoholic blowing off AA meetings to go to the bar and get blasted and then turning around and blaming his sponsor that he hasnt been seeing any progress in improving his life.

I don't know if he is literally dictating who he plays with, but I do think there is a demand coming from up top that keeping Pouty McPoutface placated is the top priority. Beside being Katz's pride and joy, they want to avoid the PR debacle that would occur if McDavid wants out, so if they can't win, they are at least going to try and pad his stats. Every coach that goes to Edmonton needs to try to figure out how to keep McDavid happy while still trying to balance lines. I honestly think Tippett tries to balance lines but just can't do it in a way that keeps McDavid from being McSad.
I think McDavid is a very difficult player to coach and management has put his wellbeing as the number one priority.

Is it possible the media sweetheart Connor is actually a shady, me-first player that uses his captaincy and prominence in the organization to subvert the coaches, and subsequently disregards his defensive duties on the ice?
Well I never!...

I think that's just the defenseman wanting to change, then saw that McDavid might need him as an outlet pass, and stayed on. But McDavid said go ahead and change.
However, I welcome Oiler Nation completely losing their #### over it.

It's nice to see McDavid that frustrated. I couldn't imagine being in his shoes. He's the most talented player in the league and the franchise has mismanaged everything so much. It's one thing to draft a consensus #1 pick like Yakupov and him not turn out. Or draft a consensus #3 pick in Puljujarvi and have him not turn out. One can argue that the Oilers should've traded that Yak pick to get a D man ++ and Jarmo Kekäläinen had the foresight to not draft his fellow countryman. However, the blatant mistakes made are so embarrassing for that team. CalgaryPuck wouldn't have made ANY of these deals.
Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson
Griffin Reinhart for a 2015 First (Barzal) and Second Rounder
Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome
Ryan Strome for Ryan Spooner
Justin Schultz for a Third-Round Pick
Mikko Koskinen’s Contract
Drake Caggiula for Brandon Manning

After reading what Scotty Bowman said to Stevie Y, I was wondering, if Scotty is coaching the Oilers, and he said to McDavid what he said to Stevie Y, would McDavid pout and management will have to fire Scotty?

Yes.
That was a different time.

To summarize the bolded trades:
Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Justin Schultz, a 1st and a 2nd for
Adam Larsson, Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Spooner and a 3rd
If they just traded Hall for what they got back, it would be a really bad trade. But they threw in Eberle, Schultz, and a couple of high picks for good measure
