If you're a player thats won it all and are looking for a retirement contract, Edmonton is likely to give you the most money and term?

'We'll give you more term' in Edmonton sounds more like a threat than a perk.

IF the oilers were smart they would trade Draisaitl to the Senators today for a package around Tkachuk and a good dman/prospect. Drai's value will only decline from the peak of last season.
What they will do is run McDavid out of town, idiots. lol

Hey...if its a matter of millions of dollars and you've already got your ring?
See: Khabibulin
The Oilers engaged in a bidding war with themselves on that one and look how well that worked out!

The tough part for any team trading for McDavid is to acquire him without becoming the Oilers... a team with no depth that’s solely dependent on McDavid lighting it up every single night.
For the cap to work... most teams need to trade two players on the $6 million to $8 million range in exchange for McDavid. The Oilers will probably want their top centre (example: Barkov) and their top defenceman (example: Ekblad). Plus the Oilers will want futures/top prospect. This very much limits the teams willing and able to go for it.
Only way to open up the team to a huge variety of trades is if the Oilers were willing to retain up to 50% of McDavid’s salary. Do that and all of a sudden the Oilers could ask for multiple skilled players and for a team to empty their cupboards of prospects and give multiple first round picks.

IMO this would actually make the oilers a better team on paper, but they would never do it.
To my above comment:
Draisaitl (8.5)+Kahun (.975) for B. Tkachuk (.925)+ Chabot (8)

Contract lengths probably make Edmonton say no. They almost certainly keep both guys beyond next season.
Goalies likely have to go both ways to make a trade work too.

McAvi would only agree to a trade to a city where he can go about unrecognized on the street, so that he doesn't get accosted by overzealous fans at restaurants, etc.

Is there actually any evidence that the DRY line was "the best line in hockey" last year? Or is that one of those Oilers things where they say something enough times to believe that it's true?

Not to mention most above average established players have some form of no movement clause, which is practically guaranteed to have Edmonton on the list.
They would almost certainly need to see the quality of the return come back in the form of young players and/or draft picks who are net entitled to NMCs/NTCs, while making up for the salary difference by taking on another team's dead weight.

They were only together for like 15 games IIRC, and Yamamoto shot 25%. Most people would call this a hot streak but oilers fans believe they had the best line in the NHL.

And it's not like there is any light at the end of the tunnel.
2021/2022
x - McLotto - Kassian
x - Draisaitl - x
x - Turris - Puljujarvi
Neal - x - Archibald
x - x
Klefbom - Nurse
Russell - Bear
Jones - x
Lagesson
Kostin'em
x
That's 5 or 6 players who would get a contract with a different team.
You got $29,708,64 to sign 9 more players including Nuge (min 7M), Yamamoto (probably 4M+). Seeing Holland's body of work he'll probably sign at least overpriced bum as well.
The answer? They can maybe afford 1 decent player and then a bunch of league minimum guys and ELC's.

I don't know why Ottawa would do that. This isn't NHL2021, teams need to be mindful of contract lengths and timing and when their window is. Why would Ottawa want to acquire an older player partway through a non-ELC right now?

MacKinnon and Crosby simply do more for a team as it pertains to the goal of winning. There might be more on that list that can produce similarly while doing other things.
Of late it feels like McDavid puts up two points for every three against that he's out on the ice for, floating in no man's land.

I look at that roster and it have continually gotten worse each year since they made the play-offs. Their inability to draft going back five years is biting them in the arse right now. Even if Holland manages to turn things around in that department, they can't afford to wait 4 or 5 years for these kids to make their mark. McDavid will be on the back half of his 8 year contract after this failed season. Chances are in the off season they will make the mistake every GM prior to Holland has made, try to build a team through FA. Funny thing is they have to, to appease McDavid.

Oilers trade:
McDavid - $12,500,000
Bear - $2,000,000
Broberg
Salary Out = $14,500,000
Rangers trade:
Lafreniere - $925,000
DeAngelo - $4,800,000
Smith - $4,350,000
Buchnevich - $3,250,000
Salary Out = $13,325,000
Oilers upgrade on the wings and Defense
Rangers upgrade down the middle
Both teams are better:
Oilers top 6:
Laf-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
Buchnevich-RNH-Kahun
DeAngelo-Smith would be their top pair, and Smith is UFA, so can free up cap next year
Rangers top 6:
Panarin-McDavid-Kakko
Kreider-Zibanejad-Strome
Bear become their 3RD

He’s still employed by the organization as a goalie coach.
The point is that he’s employed by the organization & its navel gazing nepotism.
They never learn. They wasted a beer goggles 2nd round pick on David Musil, son of Oilers scout Frank.
They always think they have a short cut or a cheat code.

Not sure I believe it though, but goodness HF especially has kind of turned on McDavid.
