Nice to see the Flames have a more complete team; No Neal's Brouwers, or Jankowski's to stifle team efforts. Johnny made some terrific plays, deserves some credit!!

This game really showed what elite goaltending can do. Canucks could have been up 4-0 after one but Markstrom held the team in. The Flames got to work the rest of the game and took over completely.

If you scroll to the bottom you can see tie breaking rules, and this is the very last one. It makes sense to have the current standings reflect the tie breaker, so Montreal is technically ahead.

Just watching highlights.

I mentioned this in the GT but hilarious on Gio's goal, Looch ducks and hides behind the net when Gio winds up...

What can you say about Markstrom. He kept us in the game in the first team comes out guns blazing in the second. That's what a good goalie does.

Ward deserves credit with his line decisions, down Dube and still manages to keep the lines fresh and ticking throughout the game.

Vancouver fans on suicide watch. Starting to realize what a good goalie and a solid defensive defenseman really do in games.
Thats the understatement of the last five years. (Sans playoffs)

Johnny did well yes. However i can still count alooot of turnovers on lazy passes and play.

Game Takes: Flames 5 Canucks 2

- Markstrom beats his former teammates again
- Calgary recovers from a terrible first period
- Is Johnny back?

Looked like a different Monahan tonight, he was leading the play which changed everything.

Johnny's pass on the Lindholm goal was incredible. A absolute bullet. Lindholm also hit it perfectly. Just a gorgeous play.

Not just a bullet, it was a bullet saucer.

No kidding. It has to be very hard for the players to take, seeing those guys, who were a huge part of their magical run just last fall now playing for the other side.

I honestly wonder about the negative effect on the Canucks young core...

Excellent first 40. Petterson looks off so far this season.

Backlund is still just a super smart player.

Markstrom having a hell of a start.

CGY 53% in FO this game and some huge clean wins. Turn around from last game.

SH draws need work though.

5 days off right now is absolute trash scheduling.

Markstrom is as advertised. He looks absolutely gigantic in the net.

Johnny was great, best game in a long time. The pass to Hanifin was fantastic as well, unlucky not to score there. He was much quicker with his decision making and stronger on they puck with his passes, nice to see.

When Valimaki gains strength and confidence look out, he's going to be awesome. Him and Nesterov are making a great 3rd pairing. Loved seeing them both on the PK as well.

Solid team, no passengers again.

This is what great goaltending can do. Markstrom didn't have to steal a game, but just the first period. Going down by only 1 allowed the Flames to regroup and come out strong. If Markstrom didn't make big save after big save, the Flames would have been down by a few more, and likely would have sagged the rest of the way through.

Even strength goal by the top line - some people didn't think they could do that any longer! I thought the top two lines were just on fire from the 2nd period on, and Demko kept this from being an embarrassment. Gaudreau and Lindholm were both very fantastic.

Pedestrian game from the bottom 6 - not bad, just a bit pedestrian from what I expect from them, though Backlund did get that goal.

Is it me, or does the PP look better with Giordano QB'ing it? I am fine with giving Andersson time on there to find his rhythm, and he has done good things to be fair. It just looks crisper with Giordano on it.

Hope Dube is ok. If there was any day to get injured, I guess it would have been today. Hopefully it was just precautionary and he doesn't even miss a practice day. I want to see this kid keep on rolling and feeling confident out there.

Great start to the season!!

Also, I need to mention this:

I am very critical of Ward for not making adjustments. It is easy to say that someone got the team fired up between the 2nd and third, but I am going to guess that Ward made the necessary adjustments in-game. This is something that has bothered me over the last few years since Hartley was canned - the team was unable to make necessary adjustments at critical times. Just as important Markstrom was in the 1st to keeping this game within reach, I have to give praise to Ward who must have been key to turning this game around.

This is going to be a special season. I predict the Flames never see the red in the +/- column, and regardless of point percentage or games played, will always be well above 500 from here on out. They will be battling with Toronto for 1st in the North.

Oh, and just because I hate the Canucks on a special day anniversary of sorts:
