The activist far-right of the party is furious with their leaders. They are 100% in the tank for Trump. Here's a collection of posts from the thread "McConnell furious with president, supports move to initiate impeachment proceedings" on a well-established, right-wing message board.

Without Trump, the GOP has converted into the relevancy of the Whigs.

McConnell sells out Trump and he kills the GOP. Not one more dime - not one more vote.

What in the Lords name is McConnell spewing???? The President campaigned heavy for the Pubic Senators in GA. The Capitol “riot” was the fault of a few over the top actors. The President in no way incited anything. So that is the Turtle’s excuse for being a full blown traitor??? It’s beyond outrageous!!!!

If they get rid of Trump, I will vote Democrat from now on, at least try to vote for the most reasonable one in the Primary. It’s really now the only way to make a difference. Republicans can’t do dick anymore.

McConnell and his dog Chow wife have been feeding from the China trough just like Joe and Hunter Biden. We already know the Republicans in DC hate President Trump AND his supporters. Good luck in ever getting another vote from the base.

It will be interesting to see if this level of anger is sustained into another election cycle. This kind of thing has been said before, but inevitably when the possibility of Democratic candidates winning elections arises, people like this get back in line and actively support the GOP.

Yeah this is it. These are people who think Biden winning means America becomes more communist than China. They'll talk a tough game, but when push comes to shove they'll vote to avoid the Dems more than to support the GOP. The challenge for the GOP is striking the balance of keeping the crazies engaged, while simultaneously not scaring suburban voters away. As we just saw the GOP can't win an election without the suburbs.

Yeah, I feel this way too, however, I'll admit I've been lightly trolling this particular message board for nigh on 20 years now and, while I've seen griping and complaints about the "GOPe" before, I have never seen this depth of anger before. The degree to which the rank-and-file activist conservative is furious with their party is something new.

First you have to remember these ignorant bozos have the attention span of squirrel on amphetamines. They will forget all about this as soon as Trump is off the regular news cycle and new extremist is spewing dog whistle rhetoric on the cable shows. Trump will fade into oblivion as soon as the next big ###### bag comes along.
Second you have to remember that the Republicans play these rubes like the sister humping fiddle lovers they are. As soon as the next election cycle comes along they start with the same tired social issue nonsense and scare the crap out of the ignorant bible thumpers with gay marriage, abortion, religion, and guns. Basically play their greatest hits and drive the ignoramuses back on the bus.
Third you have to understand that the Republicans know the voters don't have another choice. Jesus tap dancing Christ, 75 million of them just voted for another four years of Trump. They'll vote for anyone so long as they spew stupidity and racism, and have a chance to own the libs.
Republicans are as loyal as they are stupid, meaning you can beat them like rented mule and they will still love you, thinking they did something wrong. They talk a tough game, but in a binary system they really have no choice but to vote for the Republicans. It just isn't in their DNA to do anything else.

This exactly...most of the policies were standard republican stuff.
Fact is that if Trump acted like a normal human being with the same policies he would have won. Things were going well before covid.

While you are definitely correct here, there's also a huge money aspect.
Big money donors are pulling out from supporting GOP candidates. Mitch hates to see that money go away. If he's gotta sell Trump up the river to get that sweet Comcast money back, he absolutely will.

Are we sure the Lincoln project is run by Republicans? It just seems so odd they would be so destructive to their own party.

Right now, they don't see the current Republican part as "their" party.
Hence why they are going hard after all the Trumpists, and are serving a warning to other Repubs who may want to go that route.

Going out with an embarrassing, disgraceful whimper.
https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/13/polit...ent/index.html
Quote:
On the day he will be impeached for a history-making second time, President Donald Trump lacks a comprehensive legal strategy, has nothing on his public schedule and is without his preferred social media methods of responding -- in part because his son-in-law put a stop to efforts establishing his presence on fringe platforms after he was banned from Twitter.
It amounts to near-invisibility for the President at the most perilous moment of his presidency, which is ending in tumult and dramatic rebuke from members of his own party.
Aides expect Trump to mostly watch the proceedings on television throughout the day. But without Twitter, a campaign rally, a team of lawyers or Republicans willing to defend his actions, Trump is set to weather the historic shaming in subdued fashion.
|
Quote:
A handful of Republicans are poised to vote to impeach him, including Rep. Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is said to believe impeachment will help oust Trump from the GOP for good. According to a person familiar with his reaction, Trump was particularly incensed Tuesday night by Cheney's announcement, which said he'd betrayed the office of the presidency.
While other Republicans oppose impeachment because they say it is "divisive," they are not defending Trump on the merits of what he is being impeached for: inciting an insurrection.
|
Quote:
Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner intervened when other officials tried restoring the President's social media presence on sites that are often havens for extremists, such as Gab, following an unprecedented ban from several major platforms.
According to an outside adviser and an administration official, Kushner and deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino blocked efforts by other aides, including personnel chief Johnny McEntee, to get the President on fringe social media platforms after he was suspended in some fashion from almost every major one, including Twitter, Facebook and, now, YouTube.
|
Quote:
At the White House, Trump's defenses are almost invisible.
Two sources told CNN Trump has said he is bringing back Alan Dershowitz back after his stint defending Trump during the first impeachment proceedings. Trump has told people that Dershowitz's defense of him on the Senate floor saved him during his last trial. Rudy Giuliani is also expected to be involved, though no concrete legal strategy had been cobbled together as of Wednesday morning, even though Trump was slated to be impeached within hours.

The only other event on his schedule for this week -- a Thursday Medal of Freedom ceremony honoring New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick -- is off after Belichick said he would not attend.

^ the Democrats should have a simple response to GOP folks that are calling for healing and saying impeachment is divisive
They can ask their counterparts in the GOP to agree that insurrection is wrong, and that they can unite behind the principle that actions against democracy need to have consequences

And there can't be any true healing until Trump and his allies admit the truth. They need to accept responsibility and consequences, that is how healing works. As long as they keep up with the conspiracy theories and excuse what happened on January 6th, their call for healing is hollow. It's convenient to call for a truce after sucker punching someone and they are about to strike back.

Can someone with a better understanding of US politics explain what is going on right now with the impeachment vote? Can they actually remove him today?
Does any of this mean anything, or is it all just grandstanding?
I may have mis-heard while typing out emails, but I'm watching it on CNN and it sounds like they are trying to charge him with treason?

It's just grandstanding in my opinion.

Its not JUST grandstanding...there are real life consequences for Trump, the GOP AND the Democrats.
But bottom line is that this will almost assuredly end up with a senate trial in which Trump will be found guilty and never be allowed to hold office again and that is a noble goal.
Trump can still stay in office until the 20th but he is almost completely neutered at this point.

I'm not convinced Trump will be found guilty in the senate. They need a 2/3rds majority, and even though Mitch may have turned, there may be enough Republicans to support Trump still. It would be tight.
