I am now a huge fan of the State of Luxembourg's foreign minister. "A felon and political arsonist, who needs to be taken to court." If he really said that, what a burn...edit, apparently these words were about Trump. Still great. Pompeo will never work in government again.

I wonder how long the house Republicans can continue as a single group. It's a pretty big divide between voting to not certify Biden's win and voting in favor of Trump's impeachment.

They are split. You have the Trump party and the rest of the GOP. What we are starting to see is some republicans realizing that if they continue to stay silent on the Trump side they are simply handing the keys to the democrats for years and years to come. So people like Cheney are trying to secure the center rights and independents.

McConnel apparently now sees impeachment as his 'get out of jail free card' and will support it according to sources, he wants Trump dead, possibly too little too late, one can only hope

Morals aside, I guess its a matter of what the republicans want for the future of their party - A Trump like party or an attempt to revert back a bit.

Impeach and convict Trump- he can't run again. This may just minimize his impact on the party somewhat.

It's simply amazing how many members of the GOP suddenly realize how bad Trump is only when their own physical safety is threatened.

It's like... they almost didn't care about kids in cages, or sexual assault, or tear gassing protesters for photo ops until they were cowering under their desks and praying that the brainwashed yokels (their OWN yokels btw) outside didn't make it through the door.

I have zero respect for any of them.

The GOP cant win as just the party of double wide trailer park residing moron's it has to appeal to the 20% of Americans that swing from Dem to GOP, Trumpism wasn't much of a draw before, it is utterly repellant to them now

I think Trump the candidate is dead. I think Trumpism and his messaging within the party may live on, more so if not impeached.

If it does live on, I am not so sure the republicans will lose in future elections - between the electoral college advantage they have and the results of the last election.

Trump got more votes than any candidate in US history, except for Joe Biden. Therefore, I don't agree Trumpism wasn't a draw. It drew out both sides to vote, however, with Trump gone, it may just reduce the lefts excitement to vote.

Biden had a massive protest vote on his side. The right didn't really hate Biden like they did Hillary.

Oh believe me, I don’t think it has anything to do with them seeing the light. I don’t even think it has to do with having their lives threatened. It’s still all about power...getting and retaining it so they can have their evangelical and rich person wet dreams. In order to save that they have to cut out the Trump faction and they have to do it firmly so he has many hurdles as possible if he were to run again.

I dont think with Trump gone the Trumpists will be as motivated either though, both sides end up diminished.

He's not that dead as a Republican force though. He'd easily win the nomination if primaries started tomorrow. He'd also have zero chance at the general. That is why the GOP would love to disqualify him.

Absolutely.

Mitch is only bailing on Trump (if he actually follows through with an impeachment conviction) because Trump is of no further use to him.

Mitch got his judges through, his tax cuts through, and who knows what else, all because Trump was useful to him. With Trump seeing the end of his term, bailing on him now is an easy thing to do while simultaneously allowing Mitch appear to have some principles and concern for the US.

But, of course, Mitch has neither.

Let’s be clear as well. Trump got a lot of votes from normal lifelong Republicans who can look past Trump, and vote for the Republican party’s candidate

Yes he definitely has his fanatics and base

It’s not like nearly half the total voters actually like him, a lot were just voting for their team
