So you're saying one should look elsewhere for "I visited a lasting memorial to the victims of one of the greatest atrocities in human history and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" swag?

Yes.
I could make a million jokes about potential Gift Shop wares. But I'm not going to.

The World Ends when you're dead. Until then, you've got more punishment in store. - Flames Fans
If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Right. Like most places, it’s a small percentage of crazy people who make the masses look bad.
Not wanting to get off topic, but let’s not get too general with “they” comments. I can confidently say that just because 70 million people voted Republican, most of them condemn the riot. Most of them probably despise trump.
I like calling these handful of idiots trumpers or extremists, not Republicans or right wingers.
Let’s say some idiot in Calglary does something really stupid while wearing a Flames jersey. That doesn’t make all Flames fans idiots.
When 147 GOP members of congress sell their souls and vote to overturn election results, Republicans are Trumpists.
Maybe you haven't seen the videos, but there were many multiples of 'handfuls' committing full out crimes.

Yes, fair, sorry, didn't mean it as a joke about the gift shop. When I was pretty young I had a neighbor who had a similar t-shirt, looking it up, I think it was actually "My grandparents went to Auschwitz and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" which is actually much worse than I'd originally remembered.

Okay.....where does one even get an Auschwitz hoodie? The very prospect of purchasing an Auschwitz hoodie should be sufficient to put the purchaser on some sort of list.
Do you buy it for your Aryan friends for Christmas? Do respectable retailers stock these items?
Further....where does one even wear an Auschwitz hoodie? I mean...you've got to really know the room if you're going to waltz in with a move that strong.
It just seems like an impractical wardrobe choice.
over the years i've been asked to make some pretty gross designs for garments (and i'm not talking canucks and oiler level gross). i've always turned it down but it's sad that i can think of another guy here in kelowna that would do it in a heart beat and just doesn't care one bit about the message that stuff is spreading.

Yeah there seems to be some contradictory videos floating around.
Im not sure if it was the first line of police only that seemed to be just letting the thugs through the front without letting the guys inside the Capitol know what was happening...though i cant imagine it wasnt common knowledge that the mob was on its way from the speech.
Remember that video of the cop just about getting the life squeezed out of him, was a white dude as was the poor soul who died. Not sure there was a racial line drawn within the police force as to who got posted where within the building that day.
I really hope it's mostly just coincidental.
I mean, it's obvious that the race of the guards/police was an issue, as some of the white guys helped the protestors, but I doubt any of the black guys did.

I have met two people interned during WW2. One a Jew in Europe the other a civilian in South East Asia.
They both had amazing sense of humor, which sometimes was wrapped around stories that made you cry.
Those that deny or downplay these events deserve a special place in hell.

Amazing how many people on the right are posting things like “it was only a handful of people” not realizing they said the opposite with BLM. And not realizing that several of the more serious BLM protest crimes and agitators that did occur were actually from the Trump party (umbrella man in Minneapolis who invited looting by smashing up the front of autozone, bugaboo boys at a minimum helping set fire to the Minneapolis police station, shooting two officers in California during George Floyd protestors).
And no that doesn’t go the other way like ANTIFA being involved last week. The organization of this act of terrorism is through well documented racists and white supremacist postings and those same people showing up with zip ties, beating cops etc tells you who were the instigators.
There are going to be a whole bunch of trumpians getting convicted of felonies and funnily enough losing their right to vote altogether.
I may have missed this elsewhere but everyone's favorite Glock carrying Q-Anon Congresswoman Lauren Boebert was live tweeting Nancy Pelosi's wearabouts during the lock down of the Capitol

Off topic Borat (yes, that Borat) story, very heartwarming IMO:
Spoiler!
In the second movie, he dresses in his Jew costume and goes into a synagogue. Inside he finds two old ladies. As you may imagine, he said some pretty anti semitic stuff and even made some holocaust denier comments.
Only for her to respond that she was a holocaust survivor. Now, if you didn't know, Sasha Baron Cohen is Jewish.
He did something he's never done in his 20 years of playing characters to prank people. No matter how ugly things got, no matter how awkward, no matter how angry people were, he has NEVER dropped character. Ever.
But he instantly dropped character and proceeded to sit down with the two old ladies and discussed their experiences, including the lady who was a holocaust survivor. You can watch part of the interview on the xray feature thru Amazon video.
The woman died before the movie came out and sadly her family tried to sue SBC for including the clip in the movie, despite the fact the nice old lady signed the release. Too bad it became an issue because it was a truly heartwarming moment between the two of them.
“In light of events of the past week and the evolving security landscape leading up to the inauguration and at the recommendation of Secret Service Director James Murray, I have instructed the U.S. Secret Service to begin the National Special Security Event operations for the 2021 Inauguration effective Wednesday, January 13th instead of January 19th. Our federal, state, and local partners will continue to coordinate their plans and position resources for this important event”

Couldnt agree more.
My friend had a great sense of humour, his speeches were something that could change people's lives. Something that tells me that time can heal grievous wounds and that if you really want healing, talking about your experiences can be cathartic.
What really astounded me was his ability to forgive. Not something I'd be too eager to do if put in his place, which is an indictment on me more than anything else.
That being said, if you want to experience pure, sheer horror....my neighbours for 3 years were refugees of the Rwandan Genocide.
Those are some stories that are going to stick with me for a long time.
Anyhow, thats enough about that for now. We have enough problems at the moment without dredging up the past for some more.
These people that make light or ignore the Holocaust? I have no time for ignorance on that level. The sheer mental gymnastics required to make light of that or to blindly believe that 'it never happened' is something I simply cannot wrap my head around.
Its like the definition of blind privilige.
It makes my blood boil. I'm not a violent person by nature but I have some very negative and violent thoughts about buddy in the Auschwitz hoodie.

Boebert is a horrible person for sure, but I don't think that one tweet about Pelosi being escorted out of the chambers is that awful or giving away her location. Maybe there were more tweets that were since deleted, but if it's just that one tweet, I don't know if I'd consider that giving away Pelosi's location during the riot. It doesn't seem any more egregious than if a reporter had just made that single statement about the magnitude of the current situation.

She doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt here.

So now the FBI has intel of armed insurrections at all 50 state capitals during inauguration week.
Something tells me my previous thoughts on the capitol were right. That was a poke and prod event to see what they could do.
Now the real insurrection will take place.
What worries me about all of this is we know there are dissenters in all chains of command in every precinct,
NG company and even the military. And it could be extremely easy for them to break the communication line and divert forces away from insurgents. I still cannot fathom how or why the capitol police figured they were prepared for that.
What I'm saying is, they better have all hands on deck next week. Because I think its going to be very very ugly.
And by all hands I mean everybody. And layers of back up to prevent a break down internally.

I guess I read it more like, "**** is getting real, they just moved Pelosi out the chamber" than 'hey maga rioters, she has just left the chamber, check the hallways!".
