This is likely negotiating with existing sponsors who have paid money but will have less benefit this season.
Basically the NHL saying, "We'll help you get your money's worth out of the advertising dollars you have already promised us".
It not likely a matter of earning more revenue, but an attempt to keep existing revenue streams as stable as possible.
As long as these tyupes of things go away after this season, I'm ok with whatever the NHL needs to do for this season to make it work.
Very good point. Now i suppose if these companies feel like they got something out of these naming rights, then will they or others, be interested in paying something for it in the future? Because i wouldn't see the NHL turning them down, although I'd expect (hope?) they'd have some minimum threshold before going that route.
I don't think anyone is overreacting, and if anyone is overreacting it's the people who think this is going away when things get back to normal. No one gives back revenue streams once they are opened, we all know this. I think for a lot of us we want it to be as embarrassing as possible. Seriously if Vegas doesn't ultimately have jerseys composed of those cards the guys give you on the Strip for hookers, I am going to be disappoint.
Ducay saying they would prefer walking billboards akin to that Max Pacioretty picture as opposed to a division sponsor you may hear 2 or 3 times a game is simply a silly overreaction.

In my lifetime, I have realized that there are things that I may not like, but I must simply just get used to it.
This is no different. Whatever the NHL does, I will just get used to it as long as the product remains entertaining to me. I hated it when they went away from the old division name (I grew up with the Flames being part of the Smythe Division), and I disliked it when the NHL moved away from that naming scheme (and I still think the Metropolitan Division is such a dumb name).
I just don't care any longer. If it isn't Smythe, Norris, Patrick and Adams, I hate it. However, I got used to it.
Call it the McDonald's Division, Wendy's Division, Burger King Division, an KFC Division for all I care now. The Flames' division is not called the Smythe division, so I don't care if the world burns down. Nothing will ever be right again.
They should revert to 2 conferences, West and East, and only the top two teams in each conference make the playoffs. Only have a trophy for the scoring leader, (no more of this garbage like Henry Richard Trophy), and MVP and Stanley Cup champion. So much easier to like the old style

To this day I have never seen a 'Discover Card' in real life.
How is this still a thing?
Anyways, yeah this isnt going to be a temporary thing, but it was always coming. The Pandemic just hit the gas pedal on the timing. If anything the NHL must be thrilled about this because they can deflect the blame onto an uncontrollable event.
"We didnt want it either, but if you want hockey during a Pandemic the money's gotta come from somewhere!" *Shoulder Shrug*
But yeah, come on! Lets get some real good sponsors in there!

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
After reading Locke's post and saying "Yeah, who the #### has a Discover Card?", it appears the correct answer is 57 million cardholders in the US. The more you know...
