I can’t imagine why this would be temporary. There’s really no such thing as “making up lost revenue”. It’s about getting as much as you can.
I’m surprised though that companies see this as a very worthwhile investment.

I assume that the division champions don't have to include the sponsor name.

This is likely negotiating with existing sponsors who have paid money but will have less benefit this season.
Basically the NHL saying, "We'll help you get your money's worth out of the advertising dollars you have already promised us".
It not likely a matter of earning more revenue, but an attempt to keep existing revenue streams as stable as possible.
As long as these tyupes of things go away after this season, I'm ok with whatever the NHL needs to do for this season to make it work.

But seriously it'll be great when they award the Capital One Cash Back Rewards Card Stanley Cup, presented by the new season of America's Got Talent, only on NBC.

Seems like a missed opportunity...these brands could have earned more goodwill and achieved better activation by sponsoring legend names for divisions, and adding a trophy of some sort
Beliveau Division, brought to you by Scotia
Howe
Orr
Bower (or Hall)
Then do a player trophy for each that keys in on a certain attribute

I think what I really want to see is when the refs call out penalties to get a sponsor in there:
"Number 21, 2 minutes for tripping, and you're tripping if you don't use Geico for car insurance, 15 minutes could save you 15% or more."

I've said it many times if ads on jerseys means no commercials like the EPL and a quicker game then sign me up. But if anything the NHL will likely be stretching games more than ever to squeeze in more commercial time this year.

Even if this is permanent, I don't really know why any fans would care too much. It's not like fans will be referring to the divisions by the sponsor names. It's only for when announcers are presenting it on TV or on the radio. It doesn't take away from the fan experience. I think most people won't even remember the sponsor names.

Yeah, and yet the NBA has sponsors on their jerseys when no other N.A. major leagues do and no one cared.
I don't love it but I also don't really care. This isn't the NFL or MLB. Divisions don't really matter and they seem to change every handful of years.

Their necessity is different. If hockey is making games under 2 hours and cutting 45-50 minutes of commercials, ads on jerseys is great. But like I said I suspect games will be back to 3 hours or more this year to get more ads in because that money gotta come from somewhere.

I don't think anyone is overreacting, and if anyone is overreacting it's the people who think this is going away when things get back to normal. No one gives back revenue streams once they are opened, we all know this. I think for a lot of us we want it to be as embarrassing as possible. Seriously if Vegas doesn't ultimately have jerseys composed of those cards the guys give you on the Strip for hookers, I am going to be disappoint.

I get it. If this is what the league has to do to remain sustainable over the next few years, fine. Understandable.
I just don't see it ever going away, which is very dissapointing.

It is definitely never going away.
Next year I don't expect the NHL to say "No <enter big corporation's name here> we don't want your free money."

I don't really care.
It's not like in everyday speech anyone is going to be calling them that. It's just for the media.
The pandemic may have pushed things hard in this direction, but this has been the direction for a long time.
