NBA did this. Doesn't even matter. No one cares.

It's a reliable source.
Here is the pertinent quote:
"They are fairly adamant that this is for this season only. But we'll see.... Every team is absolutely desperate for revenue. Especially if you have zero fans."
I also inquired re: the ads before they were officially announced today. This is the response I got:
"Can't comment officially. But there are lots of unique sponsorship opportunities that will be available.....for THIS season ONLY."
My take? I don't know if I buy it. I agree, I think now that the door is open — why close it? Particularly if the ads aren't intrusive. I doubt there will be much long-term opposition.

It's not like we'll be able to see them with Sportnet's crappy HD cameras.
Not an issue to me.

There are people already upset about the helmet’s chin strap colour, so people will for sure be upset over helmet decals. Logos on helmets won’t bother me but the day they put a sponsorship logo on the jersey is the day I stop buying jerseys.

Yeah I think it’s inevitable though. I just don’t see pro sports leagues owners or athletes as needing more money personally.
At some point can it be more about the game and less about business? Dreaming I know. Just sad that nothing is sacred anymore except the almighty dollar.

Without fans in the buildings, the only revenue streams for teams are in sponsorships and retail. And I'd be willing to bet that retail streams will be hurt by fans not being able to buy apparel/etc. in the arenas.

If they are smart, they will be promoting the heck out of their online stores during games. It will feed into the impulse buying that arena shops benefit from. I am sure this would take a bigger cost vs savings analysis than I could provide, but I think in principle, they would be wise to decrease the price of Center Ice to increase the audience, and therefore increase merchandise and advertising exposure. I am not sure at what point increased subscription would balance out decreased price, but I am sure they have smarter people than me who could make an educated guess.
I really think increased advertisement and sponsorship is going to be the way of the future after all this.

NBA Jerseys sold to fans don't have sponsors on them, same with CFL

Panthers have found 2 sponsors for their helmets. One for games, one for practices. Not sure how much exposure a sticker will have during practice especially for the Panthers, but good on them for convincing a business to sponsor it I guess.

I get this is now a necessity for this league, but I hope they can at least keep these ads from standing out.

I wonder how much money the Panthers got. I can't imagine too much
tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands?

If the tweet and retweets about the practice helmet sponsorship reach a considerable number of people, the advertising money paid for is already seeing its return...

What I don’t get about all this is how advertising has always been on helmets. CCM, Bauer, Jofa, etc have always been prominently displayed.
Same with gloves. Has the NHL always had a deal with equipment manufacturers? I don’t know the details.
Obviously this is another level, but the seeing football helmet companies isn’t as prominently displayed. Hockey has just normalized to it.

Really? You don’t see a difference with a car has a Honda H on the front or a sticker that says McDonald’s

The equipment manufacturers have to pay the NHL a licensing fee to display their name/logos on equipment.

Watching hockey's never going to be free. You gotta pay for some sort of service to watch.

What are you even saying?
What is the difference between a Honda H on a race car & CCM on a helmet?
Is the McDonald’s logo covering the H on the car? I’m confused.
What I’m saying is that you don’t see every single Spalding or Rawlings logo taking up as much of a baseball glove as possible without being gaudy, but hockey has normalized to this on hockey gloves. The advertisement has been there for a long time. It wasn’t there in the 70’s but has crept in with the advent of helmets and expanded to gloves.

Yeah to be honest this doesn't bother me at all. Doubt it'll even register on the first game.

Agree.
If I see Scotiabank on the Flames helmets it will look the same to me as CCM.
Perception is reality. If you see something that affronts you its tough to unsee it. I'm glad that stuff doesn't bother me.
